Day 8 creators Damian Duffy and John Jennings have solicited their graphic novel The Hole in Previews, but it’s been put in the adult section, which provides a completely erroneous perception of it. The creators have tried to set the record straight on the matter. Let me add that while there is nudity and violence in this book, there is also a very literate, sophisticated and deeply insightful story at the heart of it all. This sort of misclassification goes on all the time, and not just with distributors. For example, I’ve seen some of Lance Tooks’ graphic novels racked in the adult section of some comic shops, which makes no sense either. Actually, if you dig Tooks’ work, or Ho Che Anderson’s, The Hole would be right up your alley as well. It’s difficult to describe – religion and commerce are among the main themes, there are a lot of supernatural elements, and there’s some genuinely disturbing imagery in places. Mostly it’s about the perception of African Americans in modern media and the disconnect between the fantasy and the reality. Day 8 was only a taste of what Duffy and Jennings are capable of – this is them at their fullest. Please don’t let their placement in Previews keep you from getting this book. Sample it here so you can see for yourself.
