Welcome to Buzzscope
By: Joe Doughrity
First of all, we at Buzzscope ain’t new to this. PopCultureShock, the website Buzzscope was birthed from, has been covering the comics-anime-videogames beat since the late 90s. Today we're perhaps best known having the first look & advanced preview game on lock and making wallpapers featuring icons from the world of comics, anime, movies and music. But back in the day when we first started out, PCS initially made a name for themselves by offering a certain brand of humor, insight and criticism as your friendly authority on disposable income management. And more than anything, this is the side of things we want to bring back.
Several months ago, PCS webmaster Jon Haehnle (aka chan.zero), approached me about revamping the site and expanding the coverage. Whatever we think is cool we’ll be spouting off about it on these [here] electronic pages on a daily basis. (And here's where the "scope" part of our name comes in...) From comics, Thai action movies, gaming, hip-hop, toys, DVDs, anime, manga and much more, we'll cover it.
We’ve already lined up mainstream and independent comic book professionals to bring you insightful commentary on our beloved hobby. From industry veterans such as Jim Salicrup to established creators like Phil Jimenez, Mike Oeming and Jim Krueger just to name a few. Even hot creators and rising stars like Greg Pak (Phoenix: Endsong), LeSean Thomas (the sold-out everywhere Cannon Busters), Josh Howard (Dead@17), Rob G & Rick Spears (Teenagers From Mars, Filler), Sandy Collora (Batman: Dead End, World’s Finest vids) will be blessing us with their thoughts. Catch their brilliance now and you can tell everyone you used to read ‘em way back when.
Right now is a great time to be a fanboy or girl. The summer movie season is underway with Sin City in theaters and Batman Begins on the horizon. The summer convention season is also just around the corner and Marvel, DC and dozens of independent publishers are set to launch new series. There are literally hundreds of new products vying for your attention and dollars on the stands each month. Buzzscope is here to help you narrow your focus (aim your sights if you will) on what we feel is the best of the best in popular entertainment.
Just a few years ago people were proclaiming the death of the American comic-book industy, but like Phoenix from the ashes, they have arisen anew. Comics are back... in 7-11s, on the big screen, in videogames, and right here on Buzzscope. Wherever your favorite characters appear, we got you covered.
We hope you’ll make us a part of your daily comics browsing. We’re not out to be the biggest comics site, just your favorite. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, feel free to email us (or hit up our forums).
