I had the same reaction to the Blood+ anime as you did, tollie--I found Saya a very annoying character, and bailed out before the end of season one. I didn't find her nearly as wishy-washy in the manga.

Sure, i drop by on a regular basis. The quality of the reviews is a lot better here than on TP. To be honest i haven't bothered to read them in a long time so i don't know if they have improved lately....probably not though.
That is good to hear about the manga, maybe i'll give it a shot. The anime got annoying really fast despite my preverance to vampire stories.

Lori: I'm not sure why Inubaka has an Older Teen rating. The stories occasionally touch on human relations in ways that might not be appropriate for a ten year old, but I can't think of anything especially objectionable aside from the occasional site of a woman in her underwear. (The series is seinen, so I guess that has to be in there!)

Ken: Yup, it's hard not to like Gon. Your description of him as a Jurassic "Dennis the Menace" is spot-on!

tollie01: Nice to see you here at PopCultureShock! In the manga, Saya is much less hesitant. She has some moments of doubt, but she gets down to monster slaying a lot faster than in the anime.

Is the character Saya in the manga the same as in the anime? With that i mean is she just as filled with angst...this was one of things that annoyed me most in the anime.
I don't mind the character have doubts and fears but at some point you must notice which way the wind is blowing and get down to business. You still don't have to like it but if your inaction kills people then you need to prioritize.

Glad you dug Gon. It's probably one of my favorite series at the moment. He's just too adorable!

Again, just the one title this week, though I didn't see Mushishi in my pull list.

I never got a chance to get into Kekkaishi, though I keep hearing nothing but praise for it. My kids love Gon, though I couldn't help feeling sorry for the bobcat in volume 1. Even if he was trying to eat baby eagles. Inubaka...I read the preview for it in one of the Viz sampler mangas. It's a series I'd rent/borrow, but I don't think I'd keep. Does it really deserve it's OT rating?

I don't care what any one says, an anime based on a manga is NOT better. Every series I've seen, whether I've read the manga before or after seeing it, the manga is always better. Manga based on anime is more hit and miss, I'll agree.

Kekkaishi improves steadily with each volume (with the exceptions of volumes 7 and 8, which read like filler); you're in for a treat if you just started reading it. I don't like watching fansubs, so I haven't been following the anime. But if someone licenses it for the US market, I'll definitely check it out.

As for Gon, the stories are wordless and self-contained, so you could pick up any volume and enjoy it. Inubaka is pretty episodic, so again, you could probably get away with reading volumes one and seven and still follow what's happening. And if you've seen the Blood+ anime on adult swim, I encourage you to try the manga. I actually found it more satisfying than the anime.
