Universal Wins Movie Rights to Atari’s Asteroids

Posted by: Jon Haehnle on July 5, 2009 at 10:57 pm

According to THR.com, Universal has won a four-studio bidding war to pick up the film rights to the classic Atari video game ‘Asteroids.’

We loved Asteroids, but “A four-studio bidding war”?? Everyone knows if you’re going to go after the big screen rights to a vector-based game it should be Battle Tank!

Seriously, though… look at this screenshot! Asteroids did not even have a character, let alone a plot!

This has go to be a joke. A bad one at that.

So how do you turn a 2D game with no real story into a movie. Please enlighten me?
