As Miracle Day continues to affect the world in a number of new and frightening ways, the somewhat newly-formed Torchwood team goes to work, trying to get to the bottom of things, starting off with Rex paying a visit to CIA section chief Brian Friedkin, who had received the order to take out Jack in the previous episode. There’s clearly a larger organization in play, but Friedkin isn’t nearly connected enough to give the team much more to go on, beyond the cell phone he was using whenever they needed to contact him. But an even bigger lead may come with their investigation of the pharmaceutical company PhiCorp. With the entire medical field forced to completely re-evaluate their approach to patient care, and more specifically pain management, PhiCorp seems a little too prepared for such an eventuality.
Slowly but surely, a lot of pieces are starting to fall into place, and the mystery of Miracle Day is becoming that much more engaging. The idea of “The Soulless” is especially creepy, with scores of people, feeling that there’s no meaning to life anymore, walking the streets in white masks. There’s an attitude among people that there’s no hope, and I have to commend the writers for how they’re getting that message across in the series. And while I’m still not completely sold on Bill Pullman’s Oswald Danes character, I do think it’s starting to become a more intriguing subplot, as PhiCorp’s PR manager Jilly Kitzinger remains intent on turning him into a celebrated media icon (a beatdown from two police officers notwithstanding). Even more, seeing Jack and how he reacts to Danes makes for one of the best scenes of the series thus far. It hits a strong emotional chord for Jack, as he stands face to face with the child killer Danes, and remembering the sacrifice that he was forced to make at the end of Children of the Earth.
But if there was one thing Torchwood’s been missing since its American transition, we finally get it in this episode . . . . casual sex. Torchwood just ain’t Torchwood without it! It’s another testament to the writing team when the coupling of Rex Matheson and Dr. Vera Cruz manages to feel like it comes out of nowhere, when it really is something that we should have seen coming. The approach to their interactions have been delightfully clichéd, but the abrasiveness of Rex undercuts whatever charm he exhibits just enough to dissuade the audience from the obvious chemistry he has with Cruz, but never so much that the idea of them hooking up is unfathomable. Meanwhile, Captain Jack has decided to revel in his newfound mortality, getting drunk at a gay bar and taking home a bartender.
Honestly, I’m still fearing the possibility that the cause of Miracle Day will be a bit too terrestrial compared to the other threats Torchwood has faced, I’m very much enjoying the human stories that have resulted from it. All the questions and concerns you would think that could follow such an event are being addressed, and there are plenty of ways for society to be split on the phenomenon.
Verdict: A
