I take no shame in admitting that I actually watched quite a few seasons of America’s Next Top Model back in the day. If nothing else, the show gave us Tocarra, in all her full-figured glory, who was arguably the standout of Italian Vogue’s much-ballyhooed “Black Issue” from 2008, as well as Adrienne Curry’s crazy ass, and all those delightful peepshow-style TwitPics of her doing geek shit!

But I have to say, of the seasons I watched, my favorite Top Model winner was Naima Mora. Naima was great ’cause she had such a “go with the flow” attitude and seemingly limitless positive energy. She was never catty or full of herself, and it ultimately served her well. As easy as she made modeling look compared to the rest of the girls she competed against, her modesty never seemed like a front. Homegirl was so badass, when it came time for the customary Top Model makeover, the judges decided she should be left pretty much untouched, pixie/punker mohawk and all.

Apparently, she decided the modeling world was not for her. Come to find out she’s been focusing on music lately, as frontwoman for an indie space rock-style band called Galaxy of Tar. You can check out the Afro-Punk Interview with the band, as well as download their album, Pnuema, for free. (we’re all about free music, right?)

Awwww…Naima was one my faves as well. She was just so sweet! I’m glad to see stretch her wings like this. This all seems perfect for her.
