Since it’s inception in the 1940’s, Rock ‘n Roll has seeped into every part of our culture, from movies to video games to every day life. Instead of giving you the normal take on Rhythm Game Heroine 18, we decided to look into the far more badass side of rock influence – Death By Guitar.

Note: The following rockin’ piece is sponsored by Brutal Legends and composed by guest contributor Brad Dickason — leave some feedback if you want to see more from him!

#10 – Console Death

As if the Dreamcast didn’t suffer a harsh enough blow to the ego when it died, some gamer dudes decided to add insult to injury and string up their old consoles and rock the **** out of them. NES, Genesis, Dreamcast – any system is fair game. Note the rad controller implementation on the Nintendo Family Computer, it would be amazing to use the Dpad in place of a whammy bar!

#9 – Jimmy Hendrix kills his guitar

Although he may be remembered for his LSD infatuation and ridiculous outfits, Jimmy knew how to kill a guitar. Take one part lighter fluid, a beat-up fender strat, and a drugged-out hippie guitar player who starts worshipping it… and you have one of the best guitar kill sequences of all time! Extra points to Hendrix for being so drugged up that he can’t seem to find anything to smash his guitar into and ends up flailing around wildly before connecting with the ground.

#8 – Guitar Hero kills people

Ok… so I don’t think there are really any reports of Guitar Hero ACTUALLY killing someone, this is the closest we’ve got. When the game was released, there were tons of reports of people maiming themselves in various capacities by rocking out too hard, but this guy took it upon himself to publically document his maiming. The story reads like an epic night of insane debauchery and metal heroics, but in reality it boils down to two guys trying to look cool while wailing on plastic guitars. His busted knee looks more like a bad sports injury that a mid-40’s guy would sustain via a mid-day mid-life crisis flag football game.

#7 – Rock n Roll Nightmare

It was the 80’s and hair metal was all the rage. James Cameron had just dropped Aliens and someone had the bright idea to combine the two with roughly a $20,000 budget. Thus was the story of mutual chokehold that eventually ends in the alien’s demise (oops I spoiled it).

#6 – Nirvana Bass Facepalm

It’s a shame that Kurt Cobain came along and stole all the glory, because Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic was destined for some sort of guitar-based death. Featured above is the famous scene from the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards where Novoselic catches his bass with his face. Death potential here was roughly 50% as a falling 15-lb object could easily have taken him out. Of course, being around Courtney Love on a regular basis was probably more dangerous than anything that happened on stage.
