Dinner with Pam was great until I discovered that the bus that goes back to my hotel stopped running hours ago. Fortunately Pam was generous enough to let me spend the night in her hotel room.
While hanging around Pam definitely lifted my spirits considerably, Friday brought them back down again. While I did get some smaller interviews (both Friday and Saturday) the Big Interview I was planning on doing fell through on Friday, which pissed me off. The Bigness of Everything continued to feel overwhelming; too many people, too many things to see, everything too far apart from everything else. I ended up not going to Michael Davis’ dinner and was kinda depressed for the rest of the night.
And then Saturday I was up again. Found a new route to the con which involved taking the trolley. Spent less time on the exhibit floor; that probably helped. Spent the entire morning at both the Black Panel and the BET Animation panel. In the afternoon I had lunch with my pal Jen Hachigan and her friend Jessica at a Chinese restaurant with no Chinese people in sight.
Some more interviews, another panel, this one with the fabulous Ellen Forney, and more comics to buy and people to meet. Pissed that Steven Seagle was at the Con and I didn’t even know about it! I carried around a bunch of Darwyn Cooke books thinking I’d get his autograph but I never did and meanwhile one of my favorite writers was there and I had no damn idea. It was great meeting him, though.
Went to the CCI Film Festival to see a short film directed by Star Trek: Voyager’s Tim Russ. Wasn’t that great and he wasn’t even there afterwards, which is what I had hoped. Then dinner with Jen and Jessica and their friend Steve in a Spanish restaurant, which allowed me to tell a few stories about my summer in Barcelona. Back to the hotel and stayed up all night watching TV so that I could catch my 7AM plane. Home again after spending way more time on the plane than I would’ve liked (it was drizzling slightly at LaGuardia and we were stuck in a holding pattern for nearly an hour).
Final summary tomorrow. I am glad I went to Comic-Con, but Jesus, was it stressful.
