The Hole by Duffy & Jennings

March 26th, 2008 by Rich Watson

I just got an advance copy of the forthcoming hardcover graphic novel The Hole: Consumer Culture by the Day 8 team of writer Damian Duffy and artist John Jennings. (Link includes a preview.) I haven’t started reading it yet, but I figure I oughta tell you about it now because I have good feelings about this book’s potential success. From the back cover blurb:

The American consciousness only knows voodoo through its portrayal in television and film. People are sold things through the preconceptions sold to them previously, so hyper-voodoo becomes a religion that wheedles belief out of exploitative cliche.

The Hole: Consumer Culture is a science fiction horror story about the buying of [sic] selling of race in America, the simultaneous worship and degradation of African Americans in popular culture, and the bloody terror of boundaries being torn down.

As intriguing as Day 8 was, I gotta admit it did not prepare me for what I see here. Look for a Sunday review as soon as I can. Anyone who wants to order it can go either to the link above or here.
