The show has welcomed dozens of guests weekly, including: Joe Quesada, Andrew W.K., Bill Hader, Seth Meyers, Scott Adsit, Perry Moore, Timmy Williams, Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Klaus Janson, Greg Pak, Mike Oeming, Dan Slott, Alex Robinson, Cecil Castelluci, Jimmy Palmiotti, Bill Willingham, and many more.
A new GN about a girl who thinks she’s found the actual Easter Bunny and tries to protect it. Art is evocative of Paul Pope and Doug TenNapel. Story looks like it could be goofy fun.

—————————————————-

Also notable:

“DARK RAIN has the twists of The Treasure Of the Sierra Madre, the political punch of When The Levees Broke and the character interplay of The Defiant Ones.” – Reginald Hudlin, writer of Black Panther, director of Boomerang
From Mat Johnson, writer of the acclaimed INCOGNEGRO, comes a graphic novel thriller set in the days after Hurricane Katrina. Two small-time ex-cons with big dreams get the idea that this would be the perfect time to rob a bank. Catch is, the bank is in New Orleans, and they’re on parole in Houston. Now, as every sane person tries to get out of The Big Easy, Emmit and Dabny will do whatever it takes to get in.
As they journey through a tide of human suffering, Dabny wants to help, and Emmit sees only the money. But a rogue commander of the ruthless security force “Dark Rain” has his sights set on taking down the same bank. If Emmit and Dabny don’t outrace him, their last hope for a second chance could be washed away in the floodwaters – along with their lives.

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Glyph Comics Awards (which may not seem like a big milestone, but hey, it means something to me), and throughout this month, I’m gonna look back at the brief history of the awards from different angles. There’ll be comics and creators you hear about all the time as well as those you’ve never heard of, and maybe you’ll be interested enough in some of them to want to try them, if you haven’t already. Which is, when all is said and done, the whole point. Don’t forget, the poll for this year’s Fan Award is open, so go vote for your favorite black comic if you haven’t yet.

Here’s a piece about a new sci-fi writer named RA Baker.

Todd McFarlane is determined to make a Spawn movie sequel.

Kids Comic Con, the all-ages comics convention run by Alex Simmons

To say that Alex was surprised at getting nominated for a Glyph Comics Award for his work on this book would be… understating it. But it’s definitely well-earned. Find out why this week.

—————————————————-

Also this week:

Azrael #5

Final Crisis Aftermath: Dance TP. Art by Chriscross.

Supergirl #50. Pencils by Igle. (Plus a backup story co-written by cinematic Supergirl Helen Slater!)

Black Panther: Power TP

Deathlok #4 (of 7)

Doctor Voodoo #5

Doomwar #1 (of 6). The Black Panther leads an all-star cast of heroes against Doctor Doom.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Fool’s Gold #3

ZMD #6 (of 6). Written by Grevioux.

—————————————————–

Also notable:

Green Lantern #51, Green Lantern Corps #45. Blackest Night tie-ins.

Dark Avengers #14. Siege tie-in.

Logan’s Run #1. Honestly, I’ve never understood the love for this crappy sci-fi movie, but it continues to live on, this time as a comic inspired by the film.

—————————————————-

Thoughts on this year’s GCA nominees:

- We’ve been doing the GCAs for five years now, and I’ve seen many different creators nominated for all sorts of comics. The one constant throughout it all has been Keith Knight and The K Chronicles. Fifth straight nomination, three consecutive wins. Seven lifetime noms for Keef. That’s respect, folks.

- With a leading six noms this year, including Story, Comic Strip and Rising Star, Jay Potts’ World of Hurt is the biggest debut in GCA history. And if it seems odd that Hurt beat out Bayou for a Story nomination, even though Bayou repeated in all its other categories from last year, well, what can I say? These things happen.

- Aya completes the hat trick in the Reprint category, and gets a Female Char nomination. Plus we go back to a full five nominees for Reprint; I hated having to shorten it last year but I had no choice.

- I hate having to do this every year, but I’ve got to remind people of this: in the Fan award poll, if you choose to submit a write-in candidate, PLEASE DO NOT CHOOSE ONE OF THE CHOICES ALREADY ON THE BALLOT! The write-in option is so you can vote for a black comic that’s NOT on the ballot, like Doctor Voodoo, or Black Panther, or heck, even the Chuck Clayton issues of Archie & Friends; it doesn’t matter as long as it’s not one of the five choices already listed! I’ve had this happen a bunch of times in the past by people who just don’t get it and I’m telling you now that if you do that, your vote WILL NOT COUNT! So please, either pick one of the five nominees or send in one of your own. Don’t send me a write-in vote for something that’s already on the ballot. Thank you.

Moving on…

Looks like Vin Diesel’s ready to make another Riddick movie… and Ving Rhames will appear in a Death Race prequel. Yay.

Jim Rugg is holding an Afrodisiac art contest where you can win some cool prizes.

Also notable:

Human Target #1. With the TV show now revived, co-creator Len Wein relaunches the comic as well. (I don’t think this has any connection to Peter Milligan’s Vertigo version.)

A couple of pieces by two of this year’s GCA judges: David Brothers talks about the history of Milestone on the occasion of the release of Milestone Forever, and Brian Cronin talks about an unused Barry Windsor-Smith Storm story that was remade with new characters.

I was at a comic book show in Brooklyn on Saturday and among the exhibitors was someone from the band TV on the Radio, a local band, and he had some comics he was peddling. I flipped through one – kinda light on story but with some intriguing imagery. Still, I wasn’t about to pay $6 for it, which is what he was charging. I’ll see if I can find out some more about this.

A Rochester, NY paper ran a Jump Start strip that depicted Joe, the police officer main character, getting shot – and now the strip is getting blamed for a police shooting the same week, which is absolutely insane. Start reading the strip from here and see if you agree.

On a lighter note – congratulations to cartoonist Masheka Wood, who’s expecting his first child with his wife and fellow cartoonist Mikhaela Reid.
