This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Glyph Comics Awards (which may not seem like a big milestone, but hey, it means something to me), and throughout this month, I’m gonna look back at the brief history of the awards from different angles. Thoughts on this year’s GCA nominees:

- We’ve been doing the GCAs for five years now, and I’ve seen many different creators nominated for all sorts of comics. The one constant throughout it all has been Keith Knight and The K Chronicles. Fifth straight nomination, three consecutive wins. Seven lifetime noms for Keef. That’s respect, folks.

- With a leading six noms this year, including Story, Comic Strip and Rising Star, Jay Potts’ World of Hurt is the biggest debut in GCA history. And if it seems odd that Hurt beat out Bayou for a Story nomination, even though Bayou repeated in all its other categories from last year, well, what can I say? These things happen.

- Aya completes the hat trick in the Reprint category, and gets a Female Char nomination. Plus we go back to a full five nominees for Reprint; I hated having to shorten it last year but I had no choice.

- I hate having to do this every year, but I’ve got to remind people of this: in the Fan award poll, if you choose to submit a write-in candidate, PLEASE DO NOT CHOOSE ONE OF THE CHOICES ALREADY ON THE BALLOT! The write-in option is so you can vote for a black comic that’s NOT on the ballot, like Doctor Voodoo, or Black Panther, or heck, even the Chuck Clayton issues of Archie & Friends; it doesn’t matter as long as it’s not one of the five choices already listed! I’ve had this happen a bunch of times in the past by people who just don’t get it and I’m telling you now that if you do that, your vote WILL NOT COUNT! So please, either pick one of the five nominees or send in one of your own. Don’t send me a write-in vote for something that’s already on the ballot. Thank you.

I was at a comic book show in Brooklyn on Saturday and among the exhibitors was someone from the band TV on the Radio, a local band, and he had some comics he was peddling. I flipped through one – kinda light on story but with some intriguing imagery. Still, I wasn’t about to pay $6 for it, which is what he was charging. I’ll see if I can find out some more about this.

A Rochester, NY paper ran a Jump Start strip that depicted Joe, the police officer main character, getting shot – and now the strip is getting blamed for a police shooting the same week, which is absolutely insane. Start reading the strip from here and see if you agree.

On a lighter note – congratulations to cartoonist Masheka Wood, who’s expecting his first child with his wife and fellow cartoonist Mikhaela Reid.

With a limited opening in two theaters, in NYC and LA, The Princess and the Frog made $712,000 in five days according to Box Office Mojo. It’s holding at a 66 on Metacritic, which is good though not great. The film goes wide December 11. In the meantime, here’s a piece about merchandising for the film.
