Ratchet & Clank make their return to the PS3

Since its introduction in 2002, the Ratchet & Clank series has thrown out its fair share of mysteries. 2007’s Tools of Destruction ended with one major mystery… What has happened to Clank? In 2009, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time will have players facing another, heavy-hearted mystery… Is this the final adventure for the Lombax and his roobotic sidekick?

Ratchet and Clank has always been an adventure with both heroes side by side saving the galaxy from all forms of peril, but our friends at Insomniac Games have thrown something new at us by completely separating our duo. If you are just catching up to the adventure, a back-story is told (via an interview with the bumbling self-proclaimed hero Captain Qwark) while the game is performing an initial setup. Dr. Nefarious has returned and has zapped Clank to The Great Clock in the center of the universe in another devious attempt to reign over the entire galaxy. Though the adventure for Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time is solid enough, there are signs that the story has worn through in its seven year run. Ratchet will uncover more clues to the fate of the Lombax species while Clank finally gets his moment of fame (minus the Secret Agent Clank storyline; we’ll pretend that never happened) with a look at both his origin and his ultimate destiny.

Platforming is what the series has been all about so gamers should already know to get ready for more running, jumping, anti-gravity traversing with Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. Ratchet will receive a pair of rocket boots that introduces a new way of travelling plus a much needed boost for blasting over giant ravines to get those out of the way items. The lush backgrounds and totally epic outer space scenes lend that extra flair that has always set the Ratchet and Clank series apart from its other platformer competition.

Returning as a mainstay to the series, is the enormous weapon system. Through upgrades, players will find themselves spending a lot of time and bolts tweaking the game’s enormous arsenal of tools and weapons. Old classics return to the arsenal but the new weapons give the adventure a more comical spin. The Sonic Eruptor is set to become the new fan favorite since the introduction of the Chicken Ray. The Zoni, who first appeared in Tools of Destruction, return as well and serve as helpers for making upgrades to Ratchet’s starship. Each area of the game has a set number of Zoni that can be found to make upgrades possible and you’ll find yourself backtracking to find every one. Though there’s many weapons available in the game, players will find themselves sticking to a handful and almost skip out on trying to upgrade every single weapon available.

In comparison to the previous game, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time has about the same amount of gaming content so players will find themselves clocking in about 10-12 hours of play. Though this doesn’t hurt the game, it’s very evident that the writing has suffered and therefore made the game more linear than past entries in the series.

Insomniac Games still gets much praise for the Ratchet and Clank franchise. This series is the closest to having a full Disney experience on a gaming console (sorry, Kingdom Hearts) and the visuals, dialogue, over the top scenarios and characters gives players a truly memorable experience. Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time does its job. All the loose ends are tied up and everything ends with a bang. If you’ve been following the series, or are a complete newcomer, the mix of platforming and puzzle solving will provide a truly satisfying adventure to behold.

Uncharted 2 represents the zenith of its genre and deserves to be apart of any PS3 owner's library

Uncharted is widely regarded as one of the top five greatest PS3 titles so far. The release of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a heck of a way to kick off one of the most exciting holiday seasons the gaming industry has had in recent memory. While the Uncharted franchise may look to some like a wannabe testosterone filled Tomb Raider, even the original game proved to be much more. It was a testament to how the genre could be done. Let’s take a trip with Nathan Drake and crew to find out if the sequel should be held in as high a regard.

The game starts off with Drake waking up, a bloodied mess from a wrecked train in the middle of the snow. Gravity yanks him (and you) into the game soon afterward. This event thrusts you into Naughty Dog’s unique way of seamlessly mixing together both cinema and gameplay, as you begin the game trying to save our hero from a tragic death in a demolished train car. Uncharted 2 transitions from cinema to game without even the slightest warning. It is this beginning sequence and truly amazing story-telling that sets the pace for the game.

Through twenty-six fun-filled, adrenaline packed, sexy and witty chapters, you’ll follow Drake, Chloe (voiced by Farscape and Stargate SG-1 alumnus Claudia Black), Elena and Sully in an unbelievable quest to solve the legend of Marco Polo’s lost fleet. An accidental lead and unforeseen betrayal sends them on the trail of a fabled dagger and one of the biggest finds in known history. Everything the original Uncharted did in 2007 for story-telling and plot has been done five times better in Uncharted 2.

One of the biggest changes for Uncharted 2 is the combat system. The Run-and-Gun mechanic of the game returns with tweaks designed to make the game more enjoyable and nowhere as frustrating as Drake’s Fortune was. The SIXAXIS dependant controls for both combat and exploration from the original game have been removed making for a more cohesive experience to help keep the pacing of the game fast and coordinated. The hand-to-hand combat system has also seen new design tweaks that sharpen gameplay.

Uncharted 2 is a standout game not because of what it innovates. This game doesn’t introduce anything new to the genre at all. Uncharted 2 simply takes everything that the genre is and does it phenomenally better than any other game that has come before. Its detailed environments hit your senses and draws you into locations such as humid rainforests, lethal ice lands and war-ravaged city streets. Its puzzle solving sequences are not overdone and stay completely on target to the task of pushing along the storyline. The story is engaging and never loses its focus or takes itself too seriously. The musical score is well produced and adds to the gaming experience superbly. You’ll ask yourself why every other game you’ve played isn’t put together this well.

Brand new to the Uncharted series is the multiplayer mode. This mode is completely online and will have players coming back long after they’ve beaten the single player campaign. With more than eight different maps available and up to six different modes of play (including co-op), players go head to head and compete against each other for the bragging rights of being the best. Even though Uncharted is not a first-person shooter, do not take this mode lightly. You will have to get good at this mode fast if you want to get the most out of it, but once you get the hang of it, it’s truly rewarding.

The reward system returns with all new challenges and more ways of adding depth to the game. There are 100 different treasures to keep watch for as well and 5 different difficulty levels to conquer. Uncharted 2 Among Thieves does the job that Sony and Naughty Dog set out for it. It delivers the adventure game that EVERY gamer craves, and it delivers it without sacrificing the one reason everyone plays video games: fun.

The sequel to one of 2007's biggest hits is available now, exclusively on PS3

SCEA has announced the availability of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves in North America. The original title, released in 2007 is hailed as one of the greatest PS3 titles released thus far. The extra two years Naughty Dog has spent on refining both their technology and their way of cinematic story telling through gameplay could make this a real winner.

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Oct. 13 — Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced today the North American launch of UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves exclusively for the PlayStation®3 (PS3(TM)). Developed by Naughty Dog Inc., the acclaimed development team that produced UNCHARTED: Drake’s Fortune for PS3 and the Jak & Daxter franchise for PlayStation®2, UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves blends together the art of cinema and gaming to bring players a level of realism never before seen on a game console. With an extensive, story-driven single-player mode and thrilling competitive multiplayer and cooperative modes, UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves demonstrates Hollywood blockbuster moments of roller coaster tension and exhilarating action through environments and characters brought to life by the most advanced graphics currently available on the PS3 system.

UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves picks up the story of Nathan Drake, a fortune hunter with a shady reputation and an even shadier past who is lured back into the treacherous world of thieves and mercenary treasure-seekers. In this adventure, Drake embarks on a journey that will push him to his physical, emotional, and intellectual limits as he seeks to discover the truth behind the lost fleet of Marco Polo and the mythical Himalayan valley of Shambhala, and ultimately recover the legendary Cintamani Stone. Along the way Drake encounters a rogue paramilitary leader and fugitive war criminal who’s seeking the treasure for his own nefarious purposes. Accompanied on this quest by allies both old and new, Drake is forced to confront crises of loyalty and betrayal within an underworld of smugglers and thieves.

“Since the first game play demonstration shown at E3 2009, UNCHARTED 2 has remained one of the most award winning and anticipated title launches for 2009,” said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President, Product Marketing, SCEA. “What sets the game apart from anything else on the market is that Naughty Dog has not only been able to deliver on the spectacle, they have infused it with meaning and emotion by telling a story that is so character driven it sets a new bar for the video game industry and is a technical masterpiece that truly demonstrates the capabilities of the PS3.”

The Naughty Dog 2.0 engine provides UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves with an open design, which allows players to take an aggressive or stealth approach to combat. While in combat Drake can jump across gaps in buildings during a rooftop fight, or drop off of a ledge to use the building as protection, opening up the opportunity for players to use the environment itself as a cover. In addition, free-flowing traversal gunplay adds a unique vertical element to familiar cover-based third-person shooting mechanics, allowing the player to engage in combat from any position in the environment – even while climbing or hanging. The environment also serves to challenge the player to interact with moving set pieces. Players will find themselves fighting through collapsing buildings, or battling enemies on a train taking sharp turns and moving around obstacles.

UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves holds a variety of visually stunning environments from lush, green swamps and dense urban environments, all the way to trains, rooftops and the ice and snow of the Himalayas. In these environments, players will experience dramatic in-game events that make them an active participant in the cinematic experience. With combat at the core, players will experience gunplay and varied combat enhancements, including an expanded melee system, and a variety of enemy types with advanced AI routines. The journey is balanced with the addition of puzzles that include climbing, exploration, and the need for careful observation.

“This game just couldn’t have been made on any other system; the Blu-ray is maxed and the entire game is played without loading thanks to the Hard Disc Drive,” said Christophe Balestra, co-president, Naughty Dog. “Naughty Dog is known for pushing hardware; this is the most ambitious game we have ever made and the game PS3 owners have been waiting for.”

The sheer amount of detail in UNCHARTED 2 sets an industry standard and is an achievement that only PS3 can provide. The Naughty Dog 2.0 engine creates a milestone in technology innovation by recreating reality and capturing human emotion and gives the game flawless visuals, life-like environments, seamless cut scenes, and no visible loading – a Naughty Dog hallmark. Complete with studio-scale effects, including 7.1-surround sound audio that rivals Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster films, cutting-edge artificial intelligence, voice and motion capture, UNCHARTED 2 delivers the ultimate next generation game play experience.

Competitive Multiplayer and Cooperative Modes
In addition to the addicting single-player action, UNCHARTED 2 offers robust cooperative and online multiplayer modes that bring the graphical quality of single-player with a wide variety of gameplay options. Competitive multiplayer supports up to 10 players, and offers a wide selection of match types from Deathmatch to Gold Rush across 7 different maps. Utilizing a robust party system, groups of players will remain together in ranked and custom matches while earning currency, which used in combination with currency earned in single player missions, will unlock additional content and upgrades. The competitive multiplayer also includes Cinema and Machinima modes that enable gamers to automatically record gameplay data for any match in any map and game type. Players can then head into Cinema to watch the recorded matches and then replays, screenshots and footage that can be made into videos in Machinima mode. Cooperative mode allows gamers 3 distinct scenarios for up 3 players to progress through a variety of environments by working together to accomplish set objectives.

The fan favorite is refined to give gamers even more of what they love

Platforms: PSP
Publisher: SCEA

The Patapons have left their home in search of the mythical Earthend. In their quest for what lay at the end of the world, the ship the Patapon set off on is attacked by a mighty sea monster and suddenly, the Patapons are shipwrecked in a strange new land. Taking the role of the “Mighty One”, it’s your job to lead the Patapons through new adventures as they once again take up the quest to find Earthend.

Gamers accustomed to the previous Patapon game for Sony PSP will already know the basics. Using the face buttons of the PSP system, the Mighty One plays the mystical Drum of Valor that the Patapons (one-eyed tribal people) simply cannot resist. The rhythm and tempo of your beats on the drum tell your Patapons whether to march, attack or defend their way to glory in a new adventure that contains double the amount of content as the first game. Tempo, pacing and, as the game introduces new commands, memory are the order of the day with this adventure.

New in Patapon 2 is the hero ability that is unleashed by the new Patapon Hero Character. This hero character is a customizable avatar that brings out a newfound strength with your brave little Patapons. Through tapping out three sets of beats with perfect timing, the hero ability is activated, summoning super moves that bring out a brand new level of tactics to the franchise?s somewhat simple gameplay. The larger enemies of this game easily become more manageable thanks to the hero commands and boss battles reach a new level of challenge and skill. The hero ability is a great addition to the game and adds a new level of flash with the already addictive and cutesy style of Patapon 2.

As you play, the hero isn’t the only character that changes. The evolution system of the original game has been revamped and introduces some new unit types. New warrior types can be added to your army. The Toripon is a birdlike unit that uses long-range attacks. Mahopon are Patapon 2’s equivalent of support characters and easily one of the best units in the game. Though frustratingly weak, their spell casting attacks and healing support make them a valuable addition to your army. Mecha fans will get a kick out of the Robopon that uses powerful attacks to smash and charge through enemy units and barricades.

The good thing about Patapon 2 is that the gameplay of the original game remains virtually intact. The addition of a multiplayer mode now allows you and up to three friends the opportunity to play through dozens of levels. Ad-hoc wireless and Game Sharing (for people that do not own the game) takes the game in a new direction from the original “single-player only” game. Each player has control of one Patapon Hero and everyone works together to ferry a huge egg to the end of the stage. Once the stage is completed, all the players jam out beats to hatch the egg. At the end, any rewards taken away are kept by the host of the multiplayer game so it’s a wonderful idea to play (and host) multiplayer games.

One of the more interesting things about Patapon 2 is how it?s being released. Available May 5th, Patapon 2 will be priced at $19.99 but not be released as a UMD. Retailers will have it available in stores as a download voucher that can be redeemed either on the PSP system, the PS3 system (both over the PSN) or on the PC using the Sony Media Manager software (available at Store.Playstation.com).

According to the Official Playstation Blog John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing, PlayStation 2 will be offered at a price point under $100 (that’s $99.99 MSRP, to be exact), starting April 1! Just recently the PlayStation 2 achieved a Milestone by reaching 50 million units sold in North America alone.

One of the reasons for the Playstation 2’s success according John Koller:

“In the gaming industry, the typical lifecycle for a console is around five years, but because we build each of our platforms for a large and diverse consumer base, we design our platforms differently. With the original PlayStation and now PlayStation 2, we?ve proven that consumers can rely on our platforms for their gaming and entertainment needs for at least a decade. This speaks to the technology and features that were packed into PlayStation 2 from the beginning, as well as to the ongoing support the platform enjoys from the publishing and retail communities and, well, all of you fans.”

The Playstation 2’s gaming library carries roughly 1,900 titles from both it’s first-party studios and publishing partners alone.

Great news Sony. Now start promoting your Playstation 3 the way you have the Playstation 2.

PSP owners who enjoyed the quirky nature of the original will find more of the same here...

Platforms: PSP
Publisher: SCEA

A giant, black meteor roars through the sky and comes crashing down. When the Moja Moja emerge and begin ravaging the world, another round of tilt and tumble gameplay takes off as Loco Roco returns on the Sony PSP.

Unless you’ve been asleep over the last two years, you may remember the really obscure title called Loco Roco. The game featured a cute singing blob character called Loco Roco that moved across the world in a melodic bliss. The main gameplay element consisted of using the L and R shoulder buttons to move about the world via mechanic of tilting the screen. It simulates the effect of a PSP having motion/tilt sensitivity.

The game is cute yet equally ridiculously bizarre. Using the L and R shoulder buttons, your Loco Roco rolls about the world and combining the two shoulder buttons and releasing them allows him to jump. Loco Roco starts off small, but eating buds off of plants makes your little guy grow bigger. When you have to maneuver into small places, simply hitting the O button will call a strike of lightning to split Loco Roco into smaller versions that can fit almost anywhere.

As you progress through the game, you encounter more Loco Roco which you can play as but essentially, they all do not differ in ability from each other and are merely color variations.

The core gameplay will have you roll and hop your way along from stage to stage, trying to collect up to 20 Loco Rocos per level and grabbing items that can be used in the Mui Mui house that you can build and customize. Featured in the original game as one of the more time-consuming parts of the game, the Mui Mui house returns with a greater level of customization and a lot more expansion.

Using Pickories (in-game currency) that you pick up through the game, the developers have also made sure to include mini games to play as a diversion for you from the main story. The Chuppa Chuppa game returns and this time it provides a real challenge. By shooting your Loco Roco through a maze of Chuppas, this game alone generates the best rewards, but it can drain your money. There’s also a racing game and a game quite similar to Whack-A-Mole that all provide mindless entertainment for hours.

Loco Roco 2 returns with more polish and a few innovations, but all that aside, it is a game that the player will want to take in small doses. Though not a flawed game, Loco Roco 2 can get easily repetitive and boring after 20 minutes of play. The level design and overall cuteness of the game cannot sustain it for very long. The $19.99 price tag does make it a game worth trying out and adds to the PSP library that as of late, has seen a drought of quality games.

Platform: PlayStation 3
Developer: Media Molecule
Publisher: SCEA

Where do all our dreams go? Straight to a place called Little Big Planet?

The traditional platformer goes simple on the Playstation 3 Computer Entertainment System. At first glance, this really cute and basic game created from the minds of Media Molecule looks like many others in the platform genre before it’s time. Little Big Planet changes that entirely when you are introduced to the ever-loveable hero, Sack Boy.

In Little Big Planet, the player runs, jumps, swings and even skateboards through highly innovative and imaginative levels. Perils do lurk about and you and your Sack Boy are always a skip away from the dreaded “Game Over”. Spanning eight stages which are made up of 4-5 levels, our little Sack Boy is set to go on one big adventure. Media Molecule delivers a fantastic game with well thought out stages that are beautifully artistic and fun on the eyes as well as an uplifting soundtrack that plugs you into the game. Staying true to tradition with recent platforming games, up to 4 players can join in on the action allowing for truly fun gaming. Besides being cute and bouncy, mischief is in high spirits as Sack Boy catches rides on flying birds, uses giraffes like elevators, braves stampedes of buffalo for new accessories, and even swings from the tails of monkeys to reach his goals. The gameplay is clever and really amusing with stories uniquely disguised throughout the levels.

Adding to the cuteness factor, players are able to dress up and fully customize their Sack Boy with really awesome items and clothing. You can customize everything, from his hair, to his eyes and mouth and even his expressions. This is done through use of an in-game tool called the Pop-It. The Pop-It doesn’t just allow you to make fashion choices for Sack Boy, it’s also your main interface to the game and the community of Little Big Planet.

Utilizing the PlayStation Network, Little Big Planet puts players in touch with their very own planet through multiplayer gaming. You can challenge players from all over through levels and even compete for ranking in the game’s stages via the leaderboards. As an added bonus, PS3 owners that have a PlayStation Eye camera can take pictures of themselves and plug the photos into the game as well.

If you’ve never heard anything about this game, Little Big Planet really makes its mark on the gaming community by giving the player the power to design their own stages. After you’ve learned the ropes of how to play the game, head over to the MyMoon area, and get started creating. It is here where your imagination takes over. By selecting various templates or simply starting from scratch with a completely blank level, off you go on your own platforming journey. Preset limits govern how big your created stage can be and the game itself does a noteworthy job of keeping areas from becoming overcrowded with obstacles. For those who are extremely obsessive-compulsive, this game provides the challenge of making stages that are both well-balanced and fun. Whether you’re a casual gamer who wants to dabble a little bit or a hardcore gamer with the heart of a modder, who wants to spend 40 hours on a level, the choice is yours. Once finished, your created stages can be plugged onto the PlayStation Network and shared with everyone.

With all this gaming goodness, Little Big Planet has a few hindrances. The physics of the game can be slippery at times and jumping around can lead to more trouble than it’s worth in some cases. Also, pesky camera issues tend to foul up multiplayer games which can result in unanticipated deaths of teammates. Overall, the level design of the original game content that ships with the game makes for a really fun time and the replay value of the game will lead to hours of gameplay with our little hero Sack Boy. Play, create and share is the motto for the game, and it’s one the Little Big Planet does a fantastic job of for everyone from the hardcore to the uber-casual.

Just as we approached the home stretch, Little Big Planet fans are going to have to wait a little bit longer

SCEA has just sent word that they’re having to delay Little Big Planet for PS3. In the final review process leading up to the release, they’ve found that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur’an.

SCEA is taking action to rectify the situation and will be shipping the game to retail the week of October 27th rather than next week’s release. The interesting thing about the whole situation though? Retail stores have a Little Big Stash of the game on hand already.

We’ll have more as well as our Little Big Planet review on PopCultureShock shortly.

Sony Online and Sony Computer Entertainment have decided to play nice together...

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) has announced that Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) will fall under the jurisdiction of SCEI. The move, set to be effective April 1, 2008 will have the company report to Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO of SCEI.

While this may seem like a no-brainer to most on the outside since they are two Sony companies in the videogame industry, the truth of the matter is that until now SOE and SCE have been like Crypts and Bloods. Due to SOE being under the Sony Pictures Entertainment family and SCEI being under the music entertainment group before going independant, the companies never had any overlap as far as corporate structure was concerned. We even witnessed a head of PR at SOE trying to get into an SCEA function at a game convention and being turned away at the door even after breaking out her SOE employee ID badge and showing her business card confirming her rank and position.

It will be interesting to see how this alignment will affect operations and overall product quality from both companies.

Funnily enough, MJC will round out the program with boys and young men’s boxers and loungewear. After all, it’s every guy’s dream to have boxer shorts with Nariko’s face covering the land below.

“PlayStation is an extremely strong and well-known brand” said Shelly Gayner, Director of Licensing, SCEA. “We feel that this is a great opportunity for us to satiate our core fans and extend and capitalize on PlayStation name recognition by creating a new line of apparel in connection with the PlayStation brands and our top franchise titles.”
