We first noticed when trying to logon to Everquest 2 and receiving timeout errors immediately upon entering passwords. After a few more attempts, we tried out DCU Online and were unable to login there either. Upon going to Sony Online’s site to see if there was planned outage information on the forum, we ran into the following informational public service announcement:

Dear valued SOE Customers,

We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday).

Well, Sony Online Entertainment has released that update and it is not a very pretty one. The personal information for 24 million customers has been obtained by a third party. The firm has also revealed that approximately 13,000 credit card numbers were accessed as well. Sony Online states the credit cards were from an outdated 2007 database.

They mentioned that the attacks happened April 16 and April 17 which is right around the time that Sony noticed the PSN attacks. The company stated that they launched their own investigation when the PSN and Qrocity investigations were launched. With that being the case, it is worrying that they just found out about and took the network down today, half a month after the attack.

The family friendly virtual world game has grown a subscriber base of 17 million registered users since launching in 2009 and SOE is no doubt hoping to increase that number even further with the PS3 release.

Though the game is free to play, many features, items, abilities, etc require payment via the firm’s proprietary StationCash. Released in 2009 on PC and in 2010 for Mac, the increased user-base expected by the PS3 would certainly increase what has been a substantial source of revenue for SOE.

The feature will become available with the March 10, 2011 system software update v3.60.

PlayStation Plus subscribers will automatically have access to store up to 150MB of PS3 game save data and a maximum of 1000 data files per PlayStation Network account. “Copy-prohibited save data” is also supported, and all previously backed-up save data may be restored once per 24-hour period. When the new feature launches, most PS3 titles will be compatible with online storage for game saves, and moving forward new titles will have the capability to offer the storage option.

To back-up:
1. Select [Game] > [Save Data Utility].
2. Focus on the save data you wish to back up.
3. Open up the option menu using “triangle” and select [Copy].
4. Select [Online Storage] as the destination of back up.

To copy:
1. Select [Game] > [Save Data Utility] > [Online Storage].
2. Focus on the save data you wish to copy.
3. Open up an option menu using “triangle” and select [Copy].

PlayStation Plus is available for a yearly fee of $49.99, and for a limited time, gamers will also receive 3 free bonus months when signing up for a one-year subscription. Gamers can also subscribe to the 3-month option for $17.99.

The Naruto franchise remains both a popular and profitable one. Naruto Shipuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 will release on October 19, 2010 on both the PS3 and Xbox 360, marking the first time a title an Ultimate Ninja Storm title has appeared on the Microsoft console.

Gamers that don’t want to wait for October can download the demo both over Xbox Live and PlayStation Network now.

announced it is releasing Kick-Ass for the PSN and iPhone April 15th.
Kick-Ass is a superhero action game based on the upcoming theatrical
movie by the same name. Players will be put to the test as they take

In the final review process leading up to the release, they’ve found that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur’an.

SCEA is taking action to rectify the situation and will be shipping the game to retail the week of October 27th rather than next week’s release. The interesting thing about the whole situation though? Retail stores have a Little Big Stash of the game on hand already.

As a graduate student, Chen looked to psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of “flow,” which identifies a state of focus that people find enjoyable and fulfilling. Chen uses the theory’s principles to design games that offer just enough challenge — not so little that players become bored, not so much that they become anxious.

Chen, along with Kellee Santiago, formed thatgamecompany, and secured a 3 game deal with Sony Computer Entertainment America. Their first commercial title “flOw” was release on the SONY PS3 Network, has been named the “Best Downloadable Game of 2008″ and “Best Debut Game & Innovation Nominee” by the Game Developers Choice Awards 2008, and is the best selling game on the Playstation Network in both US and Japan. Their next title, “Flower,” will be released later this year.

“The TR35 honors young innovators for accomplishments that are poised to have a dramatic impact on the world as we know it,” said Jason Pontin, editor- in-chief and publisher of Technology Review magazine. “We celebrate their success and look forward to their continued advancement of technology in their respective fields.”

“Jenova Chen exemplifies what it means to be an innovator. He pushes the boundaries of his industry, questioning assumptions about what gaming can be. Because of his breakthrough vision, the impact from his approach to gaming will be felt for generations to come,” said Krisztina “Z” Holly, USC Vice Provost for Innovation and Executive Director of the USC Stevens Institute for Innovation.

Chen and the other TR35 winners for 2008 will be featured in the September issue of Technology Review magazine and honored at EmTech08 Conference to be held at MIT in Cambridge, Mass. September 23-25, 2008.
