Heidi Klum doing a Risky Business homage in a Guitar Hero ad?* Heck yeah. Her and Tim Gunn in a Project Runway Wii-videogame? As Mr. Gunn would say, “This worries me”.

I readily admit I love Project Runway, but I draw the line at a “Wii Balance Board-compatible catwalk” mini-game. Actually I draw it well before that, but for those of you with more fabulous gaming taste than I, read on.

Atari’s Project Runway Wii game, apparently featuring Heidi & Tim?, is scheduled for Spring 2010.

From the press release:

The Project Runway video game will put players in the role of an aspiring fashion designer. Similar to the show, players will be presented with different challenges as they create designs and adorn models with hair, make-up, and accessories. Players can then become the model and strut their creations down the runway using the Wii Balance Board(TM) accessory. Capturing the true essence of Project Runway, the title will feature the show’s talent.

…

Unique features of the Project Runway video game will include: an interactive garment studio, a fashion career mode, hair and make-up studios, a Wii Balance Board-compatible catwalk game and a feature where the player can take part in high-profile fashion shoots and take on the role of a fashion photographer. All fun and family friendly game features are based on the content from the show.

Click here to read the whole Press Release. *And/or just watch Mrs. Seal struttin her stuff in the player to right.

The Challenge:
This week’s challenge is designing for the mucho preggo Rebbeca Romijn. It can be for day, night —- pregnancy’s all the time!!

Sirui: I thought, especially given that they are used to size 0 waifs, the designers did a really good job. The clothes were feminine, modest, and even a bit sexy. They should design maternity wear all the time!

Jon: I don’t know if I need to see more huge models, but you’re right, previous designers have generally had a bad time overall when it came to designing bigger sizes but this group did pretty well all around.

Sirui: Plus-size is kind of eh, but I am fascinated by maternity stuff! I love the belly!

The Workroom:

In the workroom, the designers are excited, but confused. Tailored versus drapey? Silk versus jersey? And exactly where does the baby go? Others are less practical in their planning. Malvin’s muttering about the egg, and the mother hen.

Sirui: Did he not learn anything from Ari’s elimination?

Jon: I think he’d have to be on the same planet as her, or at least the other designers, for him to have learned anything from that.

Sirui: His dress in the first round was sane though. He is capable of normalcy, when he’s not married to THE EGG.

Sirui: Tim comes to critique. Some of the designs are looking really lovely, some not so. Malvin gets more and more literal and tells Tim that he is making pants to turn a woman’s legs into chicken thighs. Hm.

Jon: I am worried that Malvin is going to make us both look foolish for having publicly expressed our interest in him in the first episode. Also, I am amazed at Tim’s ability to resist rolling his eyes or making other faces to the camera for the audience in reaction to the terrible ideas/attitudes he sometimes encounters. But instead he just says “You’re not boring me”. Which is perhaps just as great.

Sirui: The designers themselves play critic. Mitchell encourages Ra’mon, but compares the dress to a bowling ball bag. I like Ra’mon’s thinking (design a fun dress, that happens to be a preggo-dress—rather than a preggo uniform), but Mitchell’s right. The dress is retro cheap.

Jon: It should be noted that Ra’mon came up with this concept after taking the judges’ advice not to play it too safe (after last time) too far.

The Runway:
The designers parade their outfits —- mostly cute drape dresses and tunics in brighter colors. Louise, Althea, and Shirin come out on top. Shirin’s super wearable dress beats out Althea’s gown, and wins this week’s challenge. Ra’mon sucked, but not as badly as Mitchell and Malvin. Mitchell showed poor execution skills, but Malvin got sent home for overlooking practical fashion aesthetics to fulfill an abstract concept. Bye Malvin!

Sirui: From the Safes, I took note of Epperson and Logan. With Logan I thought the gold leather color was adorable, but I was especially keen on Epperson’s jumpsuit. The fabric (off-white jersey) looked sophisticated, and I love the length on it too, with the crinkling at the ankles. I hear pregnant folk need to pee a lot, so maybe a jumpsuit’s a bad idea. But I would have liked to see him in the final three.

Jon: Logan’s made his model’s belly protrude even more — but in a proud, classy way? If that’s possible. Epperson’s did look sophisticated and should’ve been a contender for Top 3.

Sirui: ::smirk:: He was a contender for the top three. Technically, they all were.

Jon: You know what I meant! But hey, since winning Project Runway is one of “bucket list” items, think of it as your first step toward your goal…

Sirui: Louise doesn’t impress me, I am biased against the 1940s. From the top two, I really had a hard time deciding between Althea’s and Shirin. Althea’s was gorgeous, from the midnight navy to the open back cut to the ribboning around the bust. But Shirin’s I could actually wear. It’s a happy dress!

Jon: Hmm. I liked Louise’s, even though it did look a little lingerie, as the judge’s noted. Althea’s had it’s strengths but even the smart choice of dark navy couldn’t stop me from thinking it was made of jersey (which people kept mentioning and mentioning) and therefore cheap. She certainly dressed it up nice though.

Sirui: I disagree with Jon on the fabric choice- I thought it was a great pick! Jersey is soft and stretchy, ie super comfy, perfect for preggos. And it’s while it’s not standard evening wear fabric, it can be kinda lux for a flowy day top or dress. Chanel used it!

Jon: I stand corrected! Admittedly it didn’t *look* cheap. Still, I liked Louise and Epperson’s better than Althea’s. But who cares — the important thing is that Shirin won! Her’s was my favorite. Plus as we mentioned last week, she’s a cutie. Go Shirin!

Sirui: Mitchell has a sharp eye for ready to wear, once again proves that he can’t sew. He really can’t. But I agree with the judge’s decision. I love Malvin a lot, but his design was bizarre and ugly. Chickens are really weird.

Jon: Mitchell’s outfit had attitude but was really horribly put together. Heidi said, “It looked like I sewed it. And I can’t sew”. I wouldn’t have minded if he Mitchell had been the one to go, especially seeing how it was his second time in the bottom. I liked Malvin too for some reason. He was another bizarre but charming, quiet Asian guy, in the mold of Top Design’s Wisit. I like to think that if he’d stayed we would’ve had a challenge or two that played to his eccentricities and seen something unimaginably unusual and winning.

After various licensing and production troubles, Project Runway Season 6 (finally, finally) premiered. Only now it’s on Lifetime. And in LA. And on Lifetime. Did I mention that it was on Lifetime? After the show’s long hiatus, anxious fans were treated to two hours and a half of PR marathoning. So, sight for sore eyes or… acid. In the eyes.

Initial Thoughts
It is hard to judge with the first few episodes, before we get a better feel for what the designers’ unique styles. But I am disappointed no one really stood out, given the first episode is trying to establish a base personality and look. Well, except crazy Ari. And uh. Well.
From the introductions, I was taken with Malvin, Epperson, and Shirin. Malvin for his belief that men and women apparently should wear the same clothes. Always. Epperson for his earthy, eclectic feel—and maybe his age can bring something to the table. Shirin? She is cute. I don’t have particularly high hopes for her designs, but hey. Cute.

Challenge: Red Carpet

The challenge for this week was to design a Red Carpet look that showcase a designer’s individual style and innovation. The designers sketch, except Ari, who likes to talk to her fabrics rather than tell them what to do. Communist!
In the workroom, the designs don’t pop, but as we feared from Lifetime. There’s crying. Ex-Meth Johnny freaks out, takes a nap, and cries until Tim talks him through it. Mitchell’s model is bigger than he expected. A woman lying about her weight? REALLY? Sucks but, I wasn’t that upset. She is beautiful and his design is not at all.

On the Runway:
Runway Day comes with Lindsay Lohan as the guest judge, and Mitchell is not done—well, someone had to send a Naked Dress. Most of the dresses played on the safe side, neutral palates in lux fabrics (ie shiny) in varying length. Based on the judges’ scoring, the top three were Ra’mon, Johnny, and Michael—with Michael taking the cake for his punk-glam VMA dress. Qristal gets scolded for low-taste, Mitchell for making excuses, and Ari for not taking things seriously. In the end, Ari and her space halter is cut.
I had been excited to see Epperson and Malvin, but the crushes did not pan out as expected. I barely remember Malvin’s and Epperson made Dr. Evil in dress form. An elderly Dr. Evil going to a funeral.

Out of the Safes, I liked Carol’s and Irina’s off-gold gowns (I’m going through a beige phase, it’s very Old World Lovely), and Nicolas’s petite woven dress. Carol’s execution on the bust was cluttered and prickly, but I liked her aristocratic concept. Irina’s had strong visual impact with the open back. It made a great first impression but on second (closer) look though, it was kind of tarty. Nicolas’s was my favorite. The black and charcoal weaving was adorable, as was his flirty low back. The ribboning reminds me a Kitsune tail. An eveningwear Kitsune tail.

I wasn’t impressed really with the top three. Ra’mon I thought was generic. Johnny’s color palate was about as tasteful as Hot Topic. (Though he gets points for the cut—it moved so playfully.) And Christopher’s dress, hip and fun as it is, feels like it’s been done several times over. It’s probably been stolen by Forever 21 several times over. Come on. Step it up guys.

As for the losers, Mitchell should have been the one to go home. Okay so Ari’s a bit out there. I couldn’t quite tell if it was a dress or a romper—neither, it’s a halter tunic, over shorts—and couldn’t think of any celebrity calling her up for her mystery garment. Does she even have a phone? But the design was actually kind of cute. So it wasn’t Red Carpet. So her explanation made no sense (no one would wear it to the Nobel Prizes). So the girl dressed like a deranged hippie-clown. It was the only design the stood out! It is a misstep to punish a designer for showing innovation, particular when it’s the first show. And come on, her competitor made the naked dress. Come on.

Conclusion:
Will I keep watching? Sure, I will keep watching. I been waiting for this so long that I will keep watching even if I wanted a pony and I got a dead hamster. But don’t take advantage of my desperation, Lifetime. Cut down on the heartwarming personal stories. They’re really not that heartwarming. More sketching, more workroom, more runway. I just want to see the clothes! More clothes!

Seriously!

In addition to web design, I work on Marketing at Midtown and a month or so ago my boss there said Marvel had asked if we were interested in a Tim Gunn signing, and he really wasn’t sure if we should do it. I said as beloved as Tim Gunn is, I was a little skeptical about how much of a crowd would show up for him as well — you’d have to think that Project Runway fans are not really comic book collectors, but who knows. (Listeners of our We Hate Comics podcast will know we genuinely liked the first two issues of Marvel Divas, but had similar questions about the target audience for such seemingly strange crossover attempts).

But then I asked who was doing the cover for this and when he said Phil Jimenez, I said there you go — that’s exactly what you need for this to be an event: Tim Gunn & Phil Jimenez! That’s the only way to do it.

And lo and behold, we’re now happy to announce that Tim Gunn & Phil Jimenez will be at Midtown Comics Times Square on Wed. Sept. 9 from 4:00 to 6:00PM to sign Models, Inc. #2!

Fashion Week is always a hectic time for models, and this year is no exception. Between escaped wolves, robbery attempts, and overly friendly police officers, Toni Turner, Patsy Walker, Jill Jerold, Chili Storm and Millicent (Millie the Model) Collins are testing the limits of their endurance.

But when a brilliant young set designer is found murdered with three bullet holes in his back, and Millie proves to be the prime suspect, the models are forced to play detective in order to save one of their own!

PLUS! Special back-up story with fashion guru TIM GUNN! When disaster strikes during a fashion show, no one can work a suit like Tim Gunn, especially when the suit is Iron Man’s! Variant cover featuring Tim and Iron Man is by Phil Jimenez.

Project Runway returns August 20th! With America’s Best Dance Crew returning on the 9th, August can’t come soon enough for me.

Here’s the trailer for Project Runway’s S6 debut (now on Lifetime, which may take some getting used to):

In related news, Heidi Klum was at Midtown Comics a couple Sundays ago. Unfortunately I work on Saturdays! Although this probably prevented me some embarrassment as they said one brave young man spoke German to Heidi and she responded with something that had him hanging his head and scampering with his tail between his legs. They said it was a playful exchange but even so, I’m glad it wasn’t me trying to sling any of my schlecht German. Co-workers also mentioned Heidi was very pregnant and bought a lot of stuff.

Of course, now that Project Runway is filming in LA, that’s probably the first and last time we’ll see Heidi in Midtown Comics, NYC. Ah well. At least this means I won’t be tempted to watch any more of The Fashion Show.

Please God, anyone but Kenley!

I wish I could say I was the one who yelled, “Is Tim Gunn Gonna Have To Choke A B*tch?!?” but credit where credit’s due it was Dylan. Still, as badly we wished for Kenley’s so well-deserved comeuppance, it has yet to come, and perhaps never will… Tim Gunn, in addition to his many other classy attributes, apparently has the patience of a saint as well. Not too surprising, but I can’t believe she never got the Heidi Klum smackdown she was begging for either.

While this season of Project Runway clearly had any number of people to hate on (Kenley!!! Keith!! Daniel!) it lacked any easy or early favorites. This isn’t a problem limited to PR of course. Lately I find myself watching shows and half the season will go by without me even knowing or fully caring who everyone is, and maybe by the time there’s half a dozen contestants I’ll hopefully have someone to root for.

Early on I picked Korto as someone I might like to win, and even now I want her to. I think the only thing I ever really disliked about her were her horrid pants with fins. However, Korto never made me love her the way Jerrell did. I admit in the beginning I dismissed him as a wannabe snarker, and was probably too busy hoping for Terri to make it to appreciate him. But Jerrell grew on me and more and more I found myself looking forward to his quips, quirks and… even his baffling array of “Men On Film”-worthy hats.

With only four contestants left I think the whole world was probably hoping Kenley would go home, but in hindsight it should have been a no-brainer to guess that the producers would keep all four around for one more episode.

But something strange happened for me after the designers went home. After seeing everybody’s collections, I suddenly realized that Jerrell had probably gone as far as he was going to go, or deserved to go really. This wasn’t exactly like Season 3, when we all loved Michael Knight above everyone else all season long, only to have him come back with a disappointing collection. That was kind of crushing. With Jerrell I somehow wasn’t surprised that his collection was a mess. (After all, the judges — or should I say editors — had foreshadowed it often enough). I felt it was over for Jerrell, as it should be, and the final bride/bridesmaid challenge didn’t change my mind, or the judges it seems.

So, in the end I’m rooting for Korto, or Leanne. And that’s fine. I’ll be holding my breath along with the rest of the viewing public as we all think the same thing: “Please god, anyone but Kenley…”

It's okay, we still love you Chris.

The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly unveils pictures from the Project Runway collections shown at Fashion Week. Here are some bad scans for your perusal — click to enlarge.

Strangely, we’re down to the finale and I don’t have anyone I’m rooting for. Well naturally it would be awesome to see Chris win, but I think we all know it’s a longshot (even without reading Entertainment Weekly’s comments) for him to even get into the final 3.

Week after week I kept waiting for someone likable to emerge, but it never happened. Christian is way too full of himself and his stuff, while edgy, is too “avant garde” to be worn in every day life. I can picture Rami, being the Uli of this season, having a really nice collection — the difference being I genuinely liked Uli. So I guess that leaves Jillian, who makes fierce coats but that’s about it. So yeah, I’ll watch the finale but sadly I could really care less who wins at this point.

The Project Runway mentor is back for Season 4. Thank god.

I don’t usually post press releases in my blog but it’s not like we have a Fashion newsfeed here, plus PR is one of my favorite shows. Probably one of the only *good* reality shows, and Tim Gunn is one of the main reasons why.

* * * * * *

TIM GUNN WILL MAKE IT WORK ON THE FOURTH SEASON OF THE EMMY-NOMINATED HIT FASHION DESIGN COMPETITION SERIES PROJECT RUNWAY

NEW YORK, NEW YORK (April 5, 2007) – The Weinstein Company, Bravo, and Miramax are pleased to announce that Tim Gunn will return for the fourth season of the Emmy-nominated premier fashion design reality series PROJECT RUNWAY. Gunn will re-join the show as a mentor along with the panel of judges including designer Michael Kors, ELLE Magazine fashion director Nina Garcia and supermodel Heidi Klum. Klum will also return as host of the series, which is the most watched show on Bravo in the history of the cable network. The joint announcement was made today by Harvey Weinstein, Co-Chairman of The Weinstein Company and Lauren Zalaznick, President of Bravo.

The Weinstein Company and Miramax are co-producing the show through their co-financing agreement. The Weinstein Company is the lead studio and is handling worldwide distribution.

Tim Gunn stated, “I am thrilled to make it official that I will be back in the workroom for season four of ‘Project Runway’. We’re in the midst of casting the designers now and I can already see that it will be another amazing season.”

Harvey Weinstein stated, “We could not be more excited that Tim is back to mentor and inspire this season’s crop of aspiring designers. His passion, creativity and dedication to the contestants and the world of fashion have helped make the show such a commercial and critical success.”

Bradley Buchanan, vice president of business and legal affairs for The Weinstein Company, negotiated the deal on behalf of Project Runway. UTA and Eric Weissler of Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum & Morris represented Tim Gunn in negotiations.

PROJECT RUNWAY gives aspiring designers a chance to break into the notoriously difficult-to-crack fashion world. Each week, a designer is eliminated from the competition after exhibiting their work in front of the panel of judges. The second and third seasons of this breakout series have generated critical acclaim and record ratings. The series has consistently been the top show on cable on Wednesdays among key demographics and has shattered the records set by the finale of season one. The series has been Wednesday’s number one show on cable among adults 18-49.

Open calls for designers interested in competing in the fourth season of PROJECT RUNWAY are being held in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago. For more details including dates, locations and official rules, applicants may visit www.ProjectRunway.com or www.BravoTV.com.

PROJECT RUNWAY is executive produced by Dan Cutforth, Jane Lipsitz and Rich Bye of Magical Elves (“Project Greenlight,” “Last Comic Standing,” “Top Chef”). Heidi Klum, Desiree Gruber and Jane Cha of NYC-based Full Picture also executive produce the series. Barbara Schneeweiss will oversee the production on behalf of The Weinstein Company.

So, I work at Midtown Comics in Times Square which is right next to Parsons — though you’d never know it watching Project Runway as they have yet to show the store that I’ve noticed.

Ever since I started watching PR I’ve kept my eye out for camera crews but never saw any — until yesterday, when I saw them shooting Tim Gunn. (He looked exactly as he does on the show). I wanted to run up and say Hi, but waited til they got done — and next thing you know Tim disappeared. So instead I introduced myself to the person in charge of the shoot.

Turns out they were not doing a PR shoot, but instead some style show for Sony. Does anyone know about this? I actually saw Tim (getting in a cab) and the director guy in front of Parsons again today but didn’t think to ask. Maybe next time? (Maybe next time I’ll actually get a chance to say Hi!)

Hi, my name is Jon Haehnle and I’m a Project Runway addict (which may or may not explain why I redesigned PCS with so much hot pink…)

If you’ve been following the show and watched the last episode (that is, you already know who the finalists are) then click the spoiler link for a link to tons of pics showing each designer’s collection at Fashion Week. Apparently these were scanned from New Yorker Magazine.

<spoiler>
Jeffrey
Laura
Michael
Uli

Laura and Uli seem to have made the effort to show some variety in their collections, while Jeffrey and Michael seem to be showing several outfits which repeat the mistakes they made in the last episode. While Jeffrey is definitely a dick, I was looking forward to seeing what kind of cool stuff he could come up with. Far more disappointing, though, is looking at these pics and getting the impression that the designer with the worst collection seems to be Michael, who has been my favorite throughout the show thus far :O
</spoiler>
