PopCultureShock is in full effect at New York Comic-con, with Kate, Jon, and I walking the show floor. The crowds are nuts, the creators are running around having fun, and I’ve been politicking like crazy.
A big part of conventions are all the breaking news that drops. Mark Waid writing Amazing Spider-Man, Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Amanda Conner doing an ongoing Power Girl series, Stan Lee working with Virgin to make new comics, Secret Invasion and Final Crisis secretly invading and finally crisising… that’s all well and good, but you and I both know that some of our distinguished competition (I’m kidding, I love those guys) has that covered three ways from Sunday.
Instead of trying to be the guy trying to beat the guy, why not try something else? So, PCS is going to focus on fun and commentary, rather than breaking news. I’ve rolled some of it out already. Gavin’s Comics From the 5th Dimension and the blogger spotlight Alternate Current are pretty cool. We’re doing commentary on Secret Invasion, and you know that we’ll have Final Crisis commentary and notes. I’ve got more coming, so keep your eyes open.
That’s my approach to New York Comic-con, too. Newsarama and CBR have the news locked down, right? We’ll let them handle that. We’ll take another path and see where it takes us!
Yesterday, I saw the Will Eisner documentary, the comics journalism panel, the Oni panel, and the Black Panel. Today, I’m going to be trawling Artist Alley, getting pictures, and taking names. Tonight, I’m writing. Tomorrow, I’ll have some quality posts for you.
Peace!
