5-page preview (plus cover)

video review of issue 1 @ Comic Vine

——————————————————

Also this week:

Deathlok #2 (of 7)

War Machine #12

——————————————————-

Also notable:

DCU Holiday Special 2009

Muppet Show #0, Toy Story #0

——————————————————–

I was at a comic book show in Brooklyn on Saturday and among the exhibitors was someone from the band TV on the Radio, a local band, and he had some comics he was peddling. I flipped through one – kinda light on story but with some intriguing imagery. Still, I wasn’t about to pay $6 for it, which is what he was charging. I’ll see if I can find out some more about this.

A Rochester, NY paper ran a Jump Start strip that depicted Joe, the police officer main character, getting shot – and now the strip is getting blamed for a police shooting the same week, which is absolutely insane. Start reading the strip from here and see if you agree.

On a lighter note – congratulations to cartoonist Masheka Wood, who’s expecting his first child with his wife and fellow cartoonist Mikhaela Reid.

Basically, the same as it is today, but with a drastically different art style. I never really tried my hand at a comic strip before, so I assumed everyone had to be drawn with childlike bodies and enormous heads. When it came out, a couple I knew kept telling me how good they thought it was. The husband was a comic artist himself and he helped me smooth out the rough edges. But my mindset was still fixed on doing it for fun. They berated me for wasting talent and eventually convinced me to send out some samples.

“A month and some rejection letters later, I got free lunch and a development offer from the WPWG. I can be easily bought with sandwiches.”

“…I had to come up with something that would fit the existing art and I had about ten minutes in which to do that. It still works. In fact, all I did was replace the offending last two panels with an earlier draft of the strip, so this is still something I wanted to say.

Remember that chimp cartoon from the New York Post that got everybody upset because they thought the artist was comparing the chimp to President Obama? Well, it looks like the Post‘s parent company is gonna attempt to be more sensitive to racial matters in the future by forming this council. While it’s not a bad idea, I hope the newspaper will also adapt tighter editorial standards. The chimp cartoon, as I noted at the time, sent conflicting messages and was completely vague as to what it was supposed to be about. I honestly think that was the only real problem – if cartoonist Sean Delonas was anti-Obama, for whatever reason, he should’ve expressed himself better in his work.

He doesn’t know whether he wants to be Mussolini or Gandhi… Thulsa, at this point, is trying to do the right thing, but his dark side often gets in the way.
