With two seasons under it’s belt, Dexter returns this fall to Showtime to do some more killing as the “master” instead of the “student”. Season 2 Complete DVDs hit stores on August 19th. This is probably my most favorite American TV show, ok not probably…it is! I highly suggest this series if you haven’t been watching it.

A family emergency kept me from posting yesterday. Sorry for the delay. (I had a really good April Fool’s gag planned, too. Maybe next year…)

Voting in the Fan Award in the Glyph Comics Awards is now closed. Thanks to everyone who voted. The entire GCA ceremony is set for Friday, May 16 as part of ECBACC 2008. Throughout this month we’ll take a look at all the nominees for this year in all ten categories.

The Kids Comic Con was quite good. I believe I had mentioned here the possibility of an awards program to coincide with the show; unfortunately, that never got off the ground, at least this year. Thanks once again to Alex Simmons for all his work in putting the show together, and don’t forget – Sunday is Kids Day at the New York Comic Con, which Alex is also a part of. Publishers Weekly has a report on the KCC.

Mohawk Media has already announced an upcoming Mr. T graphic novel. Following this book will be a series of “Versus” crossover comics, the first of which will pit the 80′s TV icon against none other than Dracula:

Explaining the series, author Christopher Bunting says: ‘When I proposed these crossovers, Mohawk Media jumped at the chance and went to great lengths to make them happen. Who can blame them? Two legends … a living legend and an undead legend … going toe to toe. It doesn’t get much more exciting than that!’

Bunting continues: ‘Kicking – or should that be biting – off the series is Dracula. How is someone as devious as him going to handle someone as straight talking as Mr. T? And as powerful as Dracula is, he’s not met anyone as tough as Mr. T before!’

As Mr. T says in the story: ‘All these suckers with their fancy powers! They need a reality check, and only one guy can do that, and that’s me, Mr. T!’

‘Ain’t no difference if they’re a vampire, a dinosaur, a mutant, if they’re doing wrong, then it needs Mr. T to set things straight with a swift right!’

Although many details of Mr. T Versus are being kept closely guarded, Mohawk Media has offered an exclusive glimpse into the series at: http://www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/mrtversus.htm

The Mr. T Limited Advance Edition graphic novel is available at Mohawk’s site and will also be available on Amazon beginning this Friday.

More pics and a new website for Will Smith’s Hancock.

South African cartoonist Zapiro gets an honorary doctorate.

I can’t get the link to this Georges Jeanty interview to open for me, so you’ll have to go through Heidi to get to it. Scroll down about a little more than halfway.

Full disclosure: I have taken part in certain aspects of the planning behind this year’s KCC.

The 2008 Kids Comic Con is only 5 weeks away!

This time around we’re not only celebrating the return of our original artists, editors and publishers, we’re also welcoming new friends such as: the New York Comic Con, Topshelf, Viz Media, Random House, Del Ray, UVC Magazine, Hyperion Books, Teshkeel Comics, Bill Galvan creator of “Scrapyard Detective,” artist Samuel Vera, and many, many more (see roster on our web site: www.kidscomiccon.com).

So for the next few weeks we’ll be announcing all the exciting new guests, events, and prizes as the elves deliver them. And to start it off … a reminder:

Random House, Inc is having their 15th Creative Writing Competition for high school students. www.randomhouse.com/creativewriting

Last year they added a new category – Graphic Novels and five teenagers walked away with college scholarships worth several thousand dollars!

This year it could be you! The deadline for the graphic novel entries is Friday, April 4th. So, any high school-ers interested in entering their own comic book story, can bring it to the KIDS’ COMIC CON first. We’ll have professional comic book artist there to review your work and give you a few last minute tips.

See you there!

This is my “official” final issue on the magazine, though I did work on parts of the upcoming issue. It’s the black women in comics issue, and regardless of the circumstances that led to me quitting, I am quite proud of what we accomplished with this. I hope you like it too.

Quite a bit of news this week. You might have heard that Alex Simmons, creator of the Kids Comic Con, is working with the New York Comic-Con to host a “Kids Day” at the latter this year. What you don’t know is what else he has planned…

*****

The KID’S COMIC CON 2008 is sounding the happy gong for two reasons this month! One – the news that we’re launching the first, official KIDS’ COMIC CON COMICS AWARDS! That’s right – the KCC will be reaching out to fans to nominate their favorite comics, graphic novels, and Manga. The finalists will be announced at our convention on March 29, 2008!

When will the winners be declared? That news ties into good news number 2 – The KIDS’ COMIC CON is teaming up with the NEW YORK COMIC CON!

That’s right! The NYCC is not only helping to sponsor our event – but they’ve asked us to join forces with them in co-sponsoring their Kid’s Day event on April 29, 2008. So, we decided to show our excitement at this new allegiance by announcing our KCC Comics Award winners at their Jacob Javitts Center event.

Why announce our winners at someone else’s comic con? Aside from celebrating our new joint ventures, we want to support our mission to promote kid-appropriate comics to as many people as we can. The NYCC is helping us do that by acknowledging these deserving comics and their creators at their comic con extravaganza.

So, keep your eyes and ears open for more gong-banging news about our upcoming events!

I’ve been one of a handful of people to assist Alex in getting the Kids Comics Awards to take shape, and it’s likely that my involvement will continue in some capacity, hence the new category for KCC. Stay tuned.

Exciting news indeed. Good luck to Rashida on this!

In other news: This comics review article from the mainstream press talks about both the Glyph Comics Awards and the Ormes Society, and is co-written by Martha Cornog, who has sent me tips in the past and sent me this one.

The old 80′s TV show Knight Rider is making a comeback as a TV movie, and among the stars will be Grindhouse‘s Sydney Poitier.

The hate for Highwaymen continues! Marc Bernardin responds to Comic Book Galaxy’s Alan David Doane citing it as one of the worst books of 2007 (even though 2007 has approximately six weeks or so left). Doane responds to Bernardin. Now I read the first issue and wasn’t impressed with it either, but I absolutely would not call it among the worst of the year. Then again, I didn’t bother with it past the first issue, so who knows how much worse (or for that matter, better) it got. Doane generally has good taste in comics (he was one of the first to give Bluesman the attention it deserved), but I think he’s overreacting a bit by calling it one of the year’s worst.
