The first trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been released. If you missed it, either you don’t care about one of the greatest stories in literary history or you were just shoved so far under a rock that the entire world passed you by.

Don’t fret, that’s what you got us for…

Returning to helm the project, Peter Jackson sets the stage to tell the story of Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit who is approached by the wizard Gandalf the Grey to join a crew of dwarves on a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the dragon Smaug. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first of a two-part movie adaptation of the 1937 novel The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. The trailer has all the elements that’ll make the biggest of fanboys giddy.

The HD version of the trailer is available at Apple.

The official synopsis for The Hobbit:

The Hobbit follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The official movie poster…

Not a sci-fi or superhero movie, but after looking at the trailer, I think this could be a lot of fun. It’s a throwback to the blaxploitation films of the 70s, and though it comes across as parody, it looks like it was made with quite a bit of affection for the sub-genre. And here’s your comics connection: it’s co-written by and starring Michael Jai White (Spawn, The Dark Knight). Related: a Los Angeles Times piece about the history of blaxploitation.

The Small Press Expo was great, as usual, and my thanks to everyone who bought my hastily put together 24-hour City Mouse comic. I wasn’t planning on selling it at the show, but I’m sure glad I did. Special thanks to Jane and Paul for use of their table. I bought several new black comics at the show that I’ll write about later this week.
