DC's titles get reviewed, including Batman and Robin #7, Superman: Secret Origin #4, and more!

BATMAN AND ROBIN #7 (DC): Goddamn this is good. Grant Morrison takes Nightman (it was either that or Batwing) to England in a spiritual sequel to the superlative Club of Heroes storyline from his run on Batman. And with Cameron Stewart on board, coupled with Alex Sinclair’s colors, the whole story may look a little more chipper and bright, but if this isn’t the best this title has looked since the first arc, I’ll eat my hat. His Nightman might look a little beefier than, say, Frank Quitely’s, but he still manages to channel a hopefulness, and sadness in Dick Grayson’s expressions. On the story side, Nightman is tracking down the world’s last Lazarus Pit, in order to resurrect Bruce Wayne. Bit of a spoiler there, but really it’s pretty clear what’s going on even before someone says it out loud. The end of the issue, though, promises a new, Morrisony twist on the Pit concept, and I can’t wait for the next issue. This title has swung back to the top of my list.

SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN #4 (DC): Like every issue in this series, the real reason for it is to let Gary Frank draw classic moments in Superman’s history. That’s pretty much it… But it’s a really, really good reason, as he nails every single one of them. Geoff Johns is channeling the tone of the Richard Donner movies here, which makes sense since Donner was one of Johns’ mentors. So we get a balance of silly humor and iconic moments. I’d argue the silly works much better here in the comics than it did in the movies, though even I’m a little strained to not wince at Parasite’s Homer Simpson-esque origin. Regardless, Johns knows how to write Lex Luthor, he knows how to write Lois Lane, and he knows how to write Superman. Here’s hoping we get him and Frank back on the title soon.

BATWOMAN IN DETECTIVE COMICS #861 (DC): This issue sees a couple of “new” additions. Jock takes up art chores from J.H. Williams III, which are difficult shoes for anyone to fill. We get a new story arc from writer Greg Rucka, exploring a new Gotham crazy called Cutter. And though its not exactly new, we cross-cut between Batman and Batwoman, both working the same case. Given how good this title has been, it’s hard to match up to the first bunch of issues, but Jock does a great job, bringing some interesting graphical motifs of his own. Rucka’s mystery is a little disappointingly easy to figure out, though well plotted as usual. And while I wish there was a little more “here’s how Batman and Batwoman are different,” which I think was the central idea, I expect those differences in philosophy will be laid out over the next two issues. Still one of the best titles on the stands, though here’s hoping Williams comes back soon (no insult to Jock).

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #41 (DC): I’ve been thinking a lot about not writing bad reviews of comics… I’m just not sure what it brings to the table, honestly. It’s hurtful for creators in a small industry, and might be funny for readers, but even if it wins you fans, it’s not the right type of fans. Anyway, I guess as long as you make it clear something isn’t good in a creative way, that’s probably enough?

JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE #6 (DC): Man… Watchmen is a really good comic. I hope I can write my own version of Watchmen someday.

SUPERGIRL #49 (DC): Before we even get into a review, how good is that cover? Easily my favorite of the week, and a contender for best of the year. Okay, on to the rest of the issue: I love this book. When Sterling Gates is given free reign to write a story about Supergirl (rather than getting caught up in an endless Superman cross-over), he delivers a damn near perfect comic book, replete with humor, pathos, and creative fights and villains. He wraps up Supergirl’s fight with Silver Banshee in this issue, but the real star is the second half, which shows the final (?) fate of Lana Lang. It’s no exaggeration when I say that I held my breath for the last few pages, it’s that tense and terrifying. Gates is easily following up on the promise he showed on his first issue on the title, and I can’t wait for next month’s #50… It should be a classic.

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #8 (DC): This is a spectacular issue of an underrated series. Part of the trend of titles that are nowhere near as over-sexed as their initial launches implied, Sirens true hero is artist Guillem March, who smooth style, along with Tomeu Morey’s beautiful shades and colors create a unique comic book reading experience. This issue, it stands out even more than usual, as March provided the plot, clearly as a way of stretching his talents. The packed panel structure provides an almost comic strip feel. Mixed with March’s sly renderings, the whole effect is unique and packed. Marc Andreyko’s script smartly is there to provide settings for March to draw, and stand back… Though, as usual, he writes a great, involving mystery, and good character moments. This is, quite possibly, the best issue of this series so far… And given that I’ve enjoyed Dini’s issues quite a bit, that’s saying a lot.

WONDER WOMAN #40 (DC): I’m glad we’re getting away from the Amazonian stuff that’s engulfed the last few issues, as writer Gail Simone excels at these sorts of more self-contained stories (at least in Wonder Woman). This issue, we get a new villain in The Crows, a group of children stirring up hatred all over Diana’s city. While most of the issue is spent with set-up and deck clearing from previous story lines, it’s heads and tails above what we’ve gotten from this title in a while, and a lot more fun. The last two pages in particular have Simone poking fun at Wonder Woman, superhero fights in general, and creating a fun cliffhanger for the next issue. I’m always rooting in the corner for this title, and this issue reminds me why.

JACK OF FABLES #42 (VERTIGO): I was a little miffed to learn that Jack of Fables (you know, the star of the book?) would be replaced by his “son” Jack Frost for the time being. And while the over the top diabolical humor has left with Jack Senior, in favor of swashbuckling adventure, I quite like this book now, as well. Right now, Willingham and Sturges are in the middle of an old-school adventure comic riff, mixing elements of Flash Gordon with Fables style magic. It’s fun to read, and breezy, though the story isn’t really doing anything new other than the riff… It’s comforting in its familiarity. I love pretty much every issue of this book, but can’t wait for its star to come back.

VICTORIAN UNDEAD #3 (WILDSTORM): Well, this continues to just be a delight. Seeing Sherlock Holmes and Watson sit down to a civilized lunch while London is overcome by outer-space zombies is just as incongruous as you’d hope it would be. And while this issue is big on exposition, with the explanations out of the way, we can get back to Holmes kicking zombie arse. But you know, in a very smart distinguished way. People may scoff, but this sort of purposeful silliness is what comics are all about, and I’m having a blast reading it.

Green Lantern #50 gets reviewed... Is it worth the pick-up?

GREEN LANTERN #50 (DC): This is a tough one for me. Doug Mahnke draws a hell of a comic, simultaneously channeling Brian Bolland, Pete Woods, and a little bit of Ivan Reis for the Blackest Night flavor. I really like his art, and in particular, the double page splashes in the center and end of this issue are killer. And Geoff Johns writing in his “action movie” mode, which is always a fun time. But… Well, there’s actually three “buts” here*.

The first is that this is far more Blackest Night #6.5 than Green Lantern #50, which is unfortunate. I’ve been loving how Johns has dovetailed the Green Lantern stories between issues of Blackest Night, planning out an arc for Hal Jordan than runs separately from the “main” series. And in particular how the GL stories have been more character based than the BN stories. So it’s a bit of a bummer to get a landmark issue that’s working more on one level (action!) than at least two (action and character!).

The second “but” is that, spoiler time, The Spectre has been taken over by a Black Lantern, and Hal Jordan’s immediate solution is to let Parallax, the evil entity that nearly destroyed the entire universe previously, free from his prison. There’s not even a ton of equivocation here. It’s like, to use the most awful example possible, if on the first day of World War II, America bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The reaction from the bewildered, horrified world would be, “Wait, what? You haven’t tried anything else yet.” Obviously I’m trivializing a sad day in world history by comparing it to a comic book, but given the import of Hal Jordan/Parallax to the DC Universe, I’d say it’s sort of the equivalent. I’m not going to say I have a million other solutions to the Spectre problem presented here, or that they should have stretched out this decision for a longer time than it took, but damn if it doesn’t come off as Hal Jordan kind of likes Parallax and was coming up with a lame excuse to see him again.

The third “but” is… Well, I actually kind of don’t want to say specifically what it is, in case Johns still has it up his sleeve. But years ago, when we first got that glimpse of Blackest Night at the end of The Sinestro Corps War, I smacked my forehead and said, “Of course! This means Johns can bring back [character], and finally bring to a crescendo the emotional arc of his entire run on Green Lantern.” And so far… That hasn’t happened. There’s still a few issues left, so I’m crossing my fingers and holding out hope, because if this character doesn’t come back, it’s a huge missed opportunity. It’s also, I understand, my own problem. It’s not up to me to dictate what Johns writes, and if he doesn’t do a story I want, just because I want it, doesn’t mean he’s wrong. It means I should get over it.

But, but, but… If he doesn’t at least have this moment, where [character] finally says… Something Hal Jordan has wanted to hear for a long time, at least since Green Lantern Rebirth, and mentioned several more times throughout the past 50 issues, it’s a real shame. I guess I’ll just have to stay tuned.

That all out of the way, though this issue is a little too two-fisted justice for my liking, there’s great art, fun fights, and ends with a cliff-hanger interesting enough that I’ll have to pick up the next issue. That’s probably an endorsement for this ish right there.

*Heh. Three butts.

DC's new comics get reviewed, including Joe the Barbarian #1, Starman #81, and more!

JOE THE BARBARIAN #1 (VERTIGO): Starting off a review of a new Grant Morrison title, and saying, “Well, that’s a weird one,” is like saying that hamburgers are delicious. Certain people will agree with you unequivocally, and know exactly what you mean; and other people are vegetarians and wrong. However, I don’t mean weird in the Morrison sense that everything is trippy and needs footnotes to even begin to parse; I mean weird in the sense that its so straight-forward. Surprisingly so. It’s accessible, easy to read, and the situation (which I’ll get to in a second) is completely easy to parse. There’s almost no mystery here.

The situation I alluded to not two sentences earlier is that teenage Joe, ostracized by his classmates, mourning the death of his father, and dealing with an emotionally absent mother, retreats into a possibly delusional fantasy land, filled with warring toys. Is it kind of like the recent Stuff of Legend? Yup. Is it like every other fantasy film ever made? Surely. Will it be ambiguous in the end whether Joe is crazy, or it was real? Well, probably. So what makes this worth it?

Sean Murphy. Grant Morrison takes ample breathers in his script (which, it should be mentioned, is well written and observed, even while cliche) to just allow Murphy to draw. And he draws the crap out of this book, from two page spreads of cemeteries, the inside of a house both cluttered and beautiful, and a splash of warring toys straight out of any childhood fantasy. His style mixes ultra realistic with cartoony to gorgeous effect, and though I could be wrong, this is probably exactly why Morrison is writing this series as straight-forwardly as he is. He’s being gracious enough to step back from the curtain, and allowing Murphy to shine. So come for the writing, stay for the art. And always ignore my metaphors about hamburgers.

STARMAN #81 (DC): Can I call this comic “ultimately frustrating,” and leave it at that? No? Okay, fine. In case you aren’t up to speed, DC brought back some of its “dead” titles in Blackest night cross-overs. And there was no title that made me more excited than James Robinson revisiting Starman, one of the best comics ever written. There’s probably no way that Robinson can effectively bring back Starman, honestly, as with each year he’s flatly refused to let Jack Knight back into DC continuity, the more intense the urge to see him increases. Which, to bring it all around, is probably why Robinson won’t write more Jack Knight stories, and why this comic is, in the end, a tease.

We get to see almost every other Starman supporting character fighting a back-from-the-dead David Knight, reflexively playing on the opening (and entire run) of the Starman series. And it’s a real thrill to see The Shade, the O’Dares, and all the rest back and interacting. Robinson doesn’t miss a beat writing these characters, and it feels like going home, in a certain way. But the reason its a tease? Well, for one, they mention Jack Knight, but we never get to see his triumphant return. And more than that, it’s only one issue long.

I realize this is the “this soup is terrible… And the portions are so small!” problem, but it’s there, so there it is. It’s a good issue, filled with brutal fights and great character moments, but at the end of the day, I’d rather have a full throttle, new Starman run than this one issue tease. Don’t fondle the tip if you’re not gonna put it in, know what I’m sayin’? Yeah you do.

BLACKEST NIGHT: THE FLASH #2 (DC): …On the other hand, Geoff Johns and Scott Kolins back together on The Flash, even for three issues, is like crack injected directly into my brain. Every criticism I’ve had of Blackest Night, all the lack of emotional character struggle, sense of humor, sense of fun and danger lacking from the main series is right here in this issue. From a character shouting, “Everything is better with Gorillas!” (something like that), to Captain Cold completely OWNING the Black Lanterns, this is the kind of issue that makes you clap with joy as you’re reading it. I know I’m a little biased, as the Johns/Kolins Flash run is one of my favorites of all time, but I love the Blue Lantern Flash stuff, even though I thought it was silly at the end of Blakest Night #6; and the Rogues are so much fun to read, and so well written, I want — no, need them to get their own ongoing. This is why comics are made.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #44 (DC): Here, I’ll keep this short, because the rest of these have been pretty long: Peter Tomasi writes a hell of a comic book. Big, fun moments, mostly action. It’s a middle chapter, and it feels that way, but there’s a creative solution to the Black Lantern infestation of Oa that makes a lot more sense than some of the other temporary solutions we’ve seen in other books. I’m really looking forward to Brightest Day under Tomasi and Johns’ steady hands.

THE AUTHORITY: THE LOST YEAR #5 (WILDSTORM): See, that’s what I’m talking about with putting The Authority in the worst situation possible, and then trying to figure out how to get them out of it. Space monsters attack The Carrier in The Bleed, and our team desperately tries to stop them. It’s nice to have two good Authority series running at the same time.

FABLES #92 (VERTIGO): Taking a break from the ongoing Witches/Mr. Dark storyline back in the good ol’ USA, this issue we revisit Ambrose and the kingdom of Haven. There’s a fun riff on Casey at the Bat, and Willingham is clearly lightening things up for a bit here. Though, there’s still enough adult humor and dark situations to make this a non-disposable lark. Every issue of this series is always good. Always. It’s kind of weird.

STREETS OF GOTHAM #8 (DC): Main story? Oh wow. Wowee. Wow. Yipes. Manhunter back-up is awesome, though, as usual. Guh. I have to wash out my brain now.

DC gets reviewed, with looks at new Suicide Squad, Superman: World of New Krypton, and more!

SUICIDE SQUAD #67: During January’s skip month for the Blackest Night event, DC had the cheeky idea to “resurrect” a few titles from the dead. Most are well beloved comics that many feel were canceled too soon, or fan favorites that aren’t currently getting a Blackest Night tie-in mini-series. One of these is Secret Six, Gail Simone’s consistently excellent book, which is ostensibly the Suicide Squad, without the government interference, or explosive chips in the villain’s heads. So it’s perfectly fitting that Simone and Suicide Squad writer John Ostrander have teamed up to bring the Squad back for one more issue, and pit them against their intellectual progeny in the Secret Six. Plus, somewhere in there? Zombies.

Along with the always reliable Jim Calafiore on art, this issue hits every single note you’d want it to hit, from Secret Six decadence, to Suicide Squad angst; a hard as nails Amanda Waller, and double crosses aplenty. If there’s one thing that brings it down, it’s the dual narration aspect between some character named Yasemin (sorry, never heard of her), and Black Alice. It’s a nice bit of parallelism, and I’m guessing an effort to bring out both author’s voices using a character on each team. But since it’s more of a side aspect to the issue, the idea never really coalesces. Beyond that quibble though, and the fact that you’ll have to follow the story back to Secret Six (which you’re reading anyway, right?) this issue is chock to the brim with action and humor. Plus? Barely any Blackest Night whatsoever! Which is kind of awesome!

THE MIGHTY #12: Though I’m sad to see this series go, I’m glad it got to wrap up in such a spectacular, emotional, and pretty much perfect manner, telling the full story (I think) that Peter J. Tomasi, Keith Champagne, and Chris Samnee on art wanted to tell. The story of a Superman gone bad isn’t a new one; in fact it’s also being told over at BOOM! with Mark Waid’s Irredeemable. Which, for the record, is also pretty darn good, but how glad am I that the two stories are completely different, and completely successful in their own ways. I won’t spoil this issue for you, but suffice to say that this is a personal conflict between Alpha One and Gabriel Cole played out with huge action set pieces, and smart character moves. Plus, there’s a few tantalizing teases of where this series could go next (though, sadly, I don’t think we’re going to get any more of it), and a beautiful, perfectly writ last page. Do yourself a favor, and when the inevitable trade comes out, don’t hesitate to pick one up for yourself, and one up for a friend. This is one of those comics series you’ll kick yourself for not picking up in the store.

SUPERMAN: WORLD OF NEW KRYPTON #11: If I had one large criticism of this series, and I may have to eat my words next issue, it would be that there’s no overall arc from issue one to issue twelve. Series writers James Robinson and Greg Rucka played this like an ongoing, which worked wonders for slowly building the, er, world of New Krypton and its inhabitants, but in the span of twelve issues, didn’t really create an overarching narrative. But, quibbles! This is the best and most original a Superman book has been a good long while (main continuity, please; I’m not talking All-Star Superman) without splitting Supes into different colors, or giving him a mullet.

Pitting Superman’s essential goodness against governmental bureaucracy, the one thing he can’t actually beat with his super powers, has been great to read, and I’ll sorely miss it when it’s gone. Plus, Pete Woods art kills every time. Though I’d love to see him on almost anything, his slick, almost metallic looking art works perfectly for the future world of New Krypton, and I’d be happy to keep him on Superman until the end of time. Or 2013, when DC loses to the rights to the character, either one.

BLACKEST NIGHT WONDER WOMAN #2: Okay, I swear to god, there better be a mass resurrection at the end of Blackest Night, or I am NOT okay with the death in this issue. Side note: I was also not okay with Kyle Rayner’s “death,” too, but this one seems far more permanent. Otherwise, we get another issue of Greg Rucka focusing on the space between scenes in Blackest Night, and again, it’s a well structured, well arced story, well drawn by Nicola Scott. But it still feels like this is more of a side story. It’s a little hard to put my finger on, but both issues, while good reads, feel like “Oh, we’re putting out a Blackest Night: Superman, and Blackest Night: Batman, we should probably do Blackest Night: Wonder Woman, too, right?” And then they decided to throw something together, and accidentally got really good creators to do the series. I guess a shorter way of saying that is, it feels resigned to itself, if that makes sense. I don’t know. Anyway, reverse that death ASAP or else. Update: I queued this post to go up this morning, and then thinking about this issue overnight, it occurred to me that maybe this issue was some sort of dream sequence, particularly as *spoilers* Wonder Girl gets killed, Bruce Wayne Batman shows up, and Wonder Woman flits around the world without rhyme or reason. Especially as the action of this issue would impossible within the confines of Blackest Night #6. Regardless, I stand by the latter criticisms, just wanted to point out I’m wrong on the death thing.

CINDERELLA: FROM FABLETOWN WITH LOVE #3: Chris Roberson fits into the Fables Universe without missing a beat, and while it lacks the wild creativity of the main series, or Jack of Fables, it can be excused for that, as it delivers a perfectly charming (no pun intended) spy story set in a world of magic. Cinderella and Aladdin are hot on the tail of illegally smuggled magical artifacts, and manage to fit in a good degree of flirting along the way. This isn’t the most groundbreaking of mysteries, but it flows well, and Roberson allows in some cultural commentary along the way. Meanwhile, back in Fabletown, things are getting wacky at the shoe store. I like this A Plot/B Plot structure quite a bit, but I’m hoping the two tie together in some way. Otherwise, we’re just getting comic relief for comic relief’s sake, which is a bit of a waste, when we could be finding out more about Cinderella’s world. Worth a pick-up if you’re a fan of Fables, but I wish it was just a little more insane.

What exactly is going on with DC's Welcome to Earth One?

With the announcement that DC will, starting next year, publish a series of original graphic novels branded Welcome to Earth One, kicking off with Batman: Earth One by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, and Superman: Earth One by J. Michael Straczynski and Shane Davis, I have a few questions for DC:

- Another origin story? Especially for Batman and Superman, who we revisit the origins of on a monthly basis, you have two distinct sections of thought, both negative. One is that their origins are so well retold that every single living being in existence already knows who Batman and Superman are, and we really just don’t need to hear it again. On the other hand, these are new continuities, free of decades of storytelling, so the creators are free to tweak the origins at will. Except…

There’s a reason Batman and Superman have their origins retold, ripped off, and copied ad nauseum: they’re iconic, and pretty much perfect origin stories. Simple, to the point, and easy to repeat in one sentence, you can’t really do better than the original. Does that mean Johns and Straczynski shouldn’t try? Sure, who knows, they could improve on perfection.

But I honestly doubt either of them are superhuman enough to completely wash Superman and Batman from their minds completely, and not in some way make either winky references, or sly, shocking changes that only matter to comic book fans – the audience this is, ostensibly, not for anyway. This isn’t a slam against the writers, by the way, it’s just the way of things. The more you try to get an idea out of your head, the more it sticks there. Example: maggots are gross. There, now try to stop thinking about maggots for the next five minutes. Checkmate, Zalben.

- Ongoing graphic novels? I’m emphasizing the ongoing part, which DC also emphasized, but didn’t elaborate on. This, if anything, gets more to the crux of my curiosity with this project, and what I don’t think has been satisfactorily answered. In fact, if anything, elaborating on this, and talking about the publishing plans would do far more to drum up interest from the mainstream than “Hey! We have people you’ve kind of heard of writing something you can find out literally anywhere!”

So what does that mean? They’ve announced Welcome to Earth One as an ongoing, but didn’t elaborate whether that means, come March, we’re going to see Aquaman: Earth One, then Snapper Carr: Earth One in April, and so on… Or if it means Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, who have trouble releasing a monthly, 20-24 page comic, are releasing a new graphic novel every month. I’d imagine not, but I’d also imagine DC wants Johns and Frank to release a second Batman book following up on the first. So when’s it coming out? How often?

- Page count? Similarly, at this point in the history of the phrase “graphic novel,” people sometimes use a 12 page mini-comic to mean “graphic novel.” So how long are these? Are they the slightly bigger than normal, double sized Batman Year 100 format? Or are they literally six issues long, collected into a trade? Or are they, as I suspect, Manga sized (meaning about 100-150 pages)?

- Printing Quality? This might seem like a small point, but tied into page count… Are these full color, glossy, trade quality books? Or again, as I’d like to suspect, are they more newsprinty, manga sized books? The reason I suspect this is because none of this was mentioned. Not to be all conspiracy minded, but mentioning the creative team and showing off some full color concept art is sweet, and will get curiosity and interest from comic book fans. However, you mention manga, and those same hardcore comic book fans will flip the f- out (for no good reason, but that’s an argument for another time).

However, what you do get are cheaply printed, easy to read books in a non-manga style, that still fit neater and nicer on book-store shelevs, with a bigger spine for reading the title.

- Price Point? This is going to be key for a lot of readers, including new readers, and is very much dependent on the previous two points. I can’t imagine a full color, glossy, original trade going for less than $15-$20, which will be a dealbreaker for a lot of readers. However, go with the manga style book (not art wise or writing wise, I’m just talking printing quality and shape), and you can easily price below $10, which is a much easier casual pick-up for… Well, everyone.

It all comes down to why DC is making these, and who they’re going to be selling them to. I hope… I really hope they’re doing this to reach out to a wider audience than just comic book fans. I hope its cheap, large, and comes out quarterly. And I hope they just steal the manga playbook and roll with it. And own it. Because DC, you may piss off the 50,000 people who read comic books, but you’re going to be reaching out to the same audience that bought over two and a half million copies of the latest volume of One Piece. And two and a half million? That’s more than 50,000.

This could change the comic book industry, forever, and for the better. But you can’t do it halfway, DC. Nut up, or… Well, you know the rest.

The Great Fables Crossover has been collected in one volume and we’re now taking pre-orders for Fables TPB Vol. 13!

If you’ve been reading Fables, you know what’s up, but for those of you who are uninitiated, the title is tremendous. Bill Willingham brings us a new take on our favorite bedtime fable characters, and in this volume, he threatens to undo existence with the introduction of The Literals. It’s a great jumping-on point for new readers and I really can’t sing enough praises for Willingham’s writing. The art is pretty stellar to boot! ;0)

This volume collects all nine issues of the Great Fables Crossover story arc: Fables #83-85, Jack of Fables #33-35 and the three-issue Literals miniseries. It’s worth it, even at the cover price, but as with all pre-orders at TFAW.com, you’ll save 20% off the cover price–just $14.39.

Did you read all nine of the Great Fables Crossover floppies? Did you dig it as much as I did? Let us know below!

I have to give credit where it’s due. Geoff Johns is a beast of a writer when it comes to this superhero stuff. I just finished Blackest Night #3, and it wasn’t the best comic of the week. It’s not the greatest super hero tale ever told. It’s probably not even John’s definitive work. What it is, is the most confident, structurally solid, modern-day superhero story I’ve read in a mainstream book in years. Kirkman does this kind of solid storytelling regularly, but that’s beside the point…

So I’m reading this and I’m traditionally a Marvel guy. I’m that fan that started when I was a kid, knew Claremont’s X-men like my own family, and regarded it as my responsibility to have a general geek knowledge of all comics, regardless the publisher. I knew the rough goings on of DC, but Marvel was my ‘place’, and remained so until about a decade ago.

Through reading the relationships and the legacies of the characters showcased in Blackest Night #3, I had to admit: DC EARNED this level of richness and texture.

This isn’t a review of the book, but an observation about the payoff that Johns (and, frankly, most of the DCU writers) achieves month after month. Characters have families in these books. There are ‘bat’ families and ‘speedster’ families, and “superman families’, and “lantern families”. Each character within the family brings their own dimension to the mythology and offers completely different additions to the respective teams to which they contribute (see J. Caleb Mozzocco’s fantastic breakdown of the new JLA), or to the legacies they’ve inherited.

More, characters grow and stories really seem to matter. Histories are recalled, and character changes are acknowledged. Characters grow into their paths, teams have purposes (and actual roles in the DCU), and if they don’t fit, they evolve to their proper places.

Without seeming too geeky, it’s fucking awesome in BN#3 seeing not only Firestorm meet Firestorm, but the differences between the two. Barry Allen has a fantastic conversation with Hal about calling him out on his bullshit, and there’s something geeky-fucking-cool about the fact that Tim, Dick, AND Daimen are running around as the OFFICIAL Bat Authorities over in BL: BATMAN #2, and all are equally important, all three are need each other.

DC has become this fantastic place with legacy and characterizations and superheroes, and continuity, and movement that is such a fun place to be with Morrison , Johns, and Tomasi leading the charge.

Then, I go over to Marvel – my home – and barely recognize the place. I’m all looking around and wondering, “are we STILL in Dark Reign?” “Who the heck ARE these people? “, and “What’s going on???” It feels like the Civil War/Skrull/Reign storyline has been going on for YEARS. Ultimate universe got destroyed, the mainstream heroes are still on the run, Spidey’s a swinging bachelor, Cap’s dead but we’re reading more old WW2 stories about him….

I simply can’t believe that these are Marvel comics anymore. It’s like a team of people who never really ‘got’ Marvel, have the keys to the kingdom and it’s crazy. There are some GREAT guys that work there and this isn’t an attack on the creative teams as much as the choice in the direction and tone of the company. It’s a bad day when Marvel treats the universe like an etch-a-sketch: Shake, erase, redo.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, guys. Just wanted to give props to Geoff Johns and DC as a whole. They clearly love what they’re doing and it comes through page after page.

Spoiler alert: Bruce Wayne is dead. Not really dead dead, but comic book dead, which means he’s in some alternate dimension or timeline or suspended animation stasis field outside of the unreality that is comic book reality.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BeOWFU4K6MM/SosbtKUt9qI/AAAAAAAAAfI/RFOhkLhtkdI/s400/ROBIN_byJoelRCarroll-DeviantArt.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371417443248764578" /> If you want to know how and why he “died,” check out Batman: R.I.P. and Final Crisis, two big events that wrapped up earlier this year, both written by Grant Morrison. You can also look at what has been going on in Gotham City and under the bat mask in the ongoing Batman and Robin (also written by Morrison, and with Frank Quitely on art–one of my favorite creative pairings). But to make it simple for you–the original Robin and former Nightwing, Dick Grayson, is now Batman; the last Robin under Bruce Wayne, Tim Drake, has moved on to his own solo vigilante persona, Red Robin; and Bruce Wayne’s long-lost out-of-the-blue secret bastard son by the daughter of one of his arch foes is the new Robin.

That didn’t make it simple for you at all, did it? Sorry.

Anyway, this kid, Damian Wayne is his name, is kind of an evil little shit, raised by ninja assassin daycare, trained to kill, and driven to one day take over the cape and cowl as Batman–whether anyone likes it or not, and possibly whether whomever is wearing the costume at the time is willing to give it up. Fan response to the nasty little bugger has been mixed at best. He’s caught a lot of people off guard and his introduction set off a chain of events in the comics that proved to be his father’s undoing. Even if fans like that the character is in the books stirring things up, they don’t necessarily like the character or think of him as a “good guy.”

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 262px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BeOWFU4K6MM/Sosd1r2yeNI/AAAAAAAAAfY/tKjngFIiPM0/s400/robin-killed-by-fans.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371419788712245458" />

It reminds me of another “new” Robin, the one who took over the role after Dick left, Jason Todd–a character so despised that he lost a 900-number van vote to live or die and wound up getting his skull bashed in by the Joker.

Of course, that was also a comic book death. Jason has been back for a couple of years now, a bitter, vengeful time and space anomaly who doesn’t know whether to be a hero or villain.

But back to Damian. He was ab abrupt addition to the Bat cast when he first arrived, but now that his initial storyline has played out and he has settled into what looks to be a long-term role, I like him. I like that he is an amoral killing machine who needs to learn how to be a hero. I like that Bruce Wayne had a bastard child from an old enemy and that the kid was raised to be Batman’s undoing…maybe still will be. I like that Grant Morrison even gave us a tiny glimpse into the not-too-distant future where Damian is Batman, fighting the good fight in a much darker version of the already-black Gotham City.

I especially like that, in the new dynamic duo, he–the 10-year-old Robin–is the stoic, brooding badass, while Batman 2 is the one doing circus flips and tossing off witty one-liners. His personality has really developed in a short time, almost entirely under the pen of Morrison, into the kind of character who can have a long, interesting role in the DC Universe.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 260px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BeOWFU4K6MM/SosdiO1SqpI/AAAAAAAAAfQ/_4HQIbdhj1Y/s400/batman_and_robin1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371419454503824018" />

Or the next writer to step in after Morrison could just kill the brat off. :(

That would be unfortunate. One of the few areas I think DC really outshines Marvel is in it’s introduction, development, and nurturing of legacy characters. No matter how clumsy and convoluted the bloated DC multiverse might get, and no matter how many irrelevant throwaway D-list characters they try and fail to push, they have definitely succeeded in layering the mythology of all the core icons with potential heirs, enemies, love interests, etc, that those characters could live on with fresh storylines–comic book epics–for decades.

Meanwhile, Marvel couldn’t fathom writing stories about Peter Parker having a baby, getting a divorce, or both, so they rebooted the last 20 years of continuity so they could go back to writing him as a never-married bachelor. And when a character does get an heir, it’s something ridiculous like “Skaar Son of Hulk” born from the charred ashes of an alien world the Hulk was stranded on for the purposes of a summer event crossover. Reed and Sue Richards of the Fantastic Four were at least allowed to have their kids the old fashioned way–though Franklyn has been prepubescent for decades and his baby sister Valeria came about after some interdimmensional sorcery by Doctor Doom.

Marvel may win on a hero by hero basis in terms of bringing it’s characters into the real world (helped greatly by the fact that it is set in the real world), but DC is definitely filling it’s fictional Gothams, and Metropolises, and Star Cities with more convincing families. And yes, that includes the ones with kill-crazy ninja babies.

Caught this on Twitter today. Wow. Just wow. Brilliant? Insane? Both?

Zan and Jayna–the Wonder Twins from the not-at-all-canon DC Super Friends cartoons–are going to appear in the upcoming ninth season of Smallville!

Can you believe it?

I mean that Smallville has survived for nine seasons.

I hate Smallville. I watch it a lot more than someone who dislikes a show should, but that is because geeks are masochistic when it comes to their completist instincts and incessant need to be in the nerd loop. And despite hating the show overall, I’ve liked a few things here and there, like last season, when Geoff Johns wrote a fun episode featuring the Legion of Superheroes, and the seasons before that where Green Arrow and the Justice League added a much needed superhero element to the superhero-centric drama. But my interest never sticks and I’ve rarely like more than an episode or two in a row.

I never thought the Dawson’s Creek-meets-comics premise would work, but approaching a decade on the air, I guess I was wrong. I’ve always felt the show lacked any of the quirk or style that made other teen-geared genre shows like Buffy and Angel worth watching, and was too removed from any recognizable comic continuity. When I finally started watching at all (around season 3) I figured most people were only watchingor three seasons simply in anticipation of some sign of the Superman they knew and loved.

Instead they got Lana Lang getting kidnapped, crashing her car, and narrowly escaping death week after week for years. Even after the show realized Clark was getting too old for high school and needed to shift the setting to Metropolis, Lana was still flipping her SUVs and causing headaches. Even when the producers remembered that Clark loves Lois, not Lana, and needed to bring Ms. Lane into the story, she was marginalized so Lana could play damsel in distress and convolute the overall plot.

It was interesting how they brought in Supergirl and Brainiac. Not so much, however, when they brought in Martain Manhunter, Bizarro, and Doomsday. It has always felt lazy and low budget to me. The stories are generally limp, the bloated cast steps all over each other in every episode to make sure everyone gets some screen time, and the star of the show–Tom Welling as Clark Kent–is kind of a tool. He lacks the conviction of a SuperMAN and never even captured any of the charm or enthusiasm of a solid SuperBOY. The show is superbly mediocre–a curiosity for my inner geek, at best.

I kind of love the Wonder Twins, though. I’ll have to reset the DVR.

Speaking of the twins, I was really hoping someone who went to San Diego Comic Con would have picked me up the cool con exclusive toy set featuring them and their pet space monkey, Gleek. There’s still time until Christmas, you know…

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 372px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BeOWFU4K6MM/SomvQ0DVU-I/AAAAAAAAAe4/f5QjWvUh4ZQ/s400/wondertwins.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371016734001419234" />

I was thinking of including one of the old SF episodes here, but I think the Adult Swim treatment captures the…er..wonder of the twins just as well, if not better:

DC's latest weekly comic hits stores today -- with a big, cool twist!

DC’s latest weekly comic hits stores today, but with a big twist:

Reinventing the classic weekly newspaper comics section, it is a 16-page weekly that unfolds to a sprawling 28″ x 20″ tabloid-sized reading experience bursting with mind-blowing color, action and excitement, with each feature on its own 14″ x 20″ page.

We hope you’ll agree that it’s actually surprisingly refreshing to unfold and flip through, and the stories are fun as well.

Wednesday Comics is the brainchild of DC’s design mastermind Mark Chiarello (also responsible for the awesome Solo series, RIP). In addition to the novelty of the format itself, Chiarello has lined up some awesome talent. Like DC’s Source blog said, “Who can resist a weekly series that features the talents of Neil Gaiman, Brian Azzarello, Mike Allred, Karl Kerschl, Joe Kubert, Walt Simonson, Dave Gibbons, Kyle Baker, Kurt Busiek, Amanda Connor…to name a few?”

DC seems to have generated a good buzz for this launch, which is normally Marvel’s forte. In addition to lining up the usual suspects for online interviews and reviews, USA TODAY is apparently running the first installment of John Arcudi & Lee Bermejo’s SUPERMAN, both online and (the part that impressed me) in today’s print edition. That is pretty cool news! Bravo, DC.

You can check out the online Superman strip at USAToday.com.

Other featured characters include: Batman, Adam Strange, Metamorpho, The Demon and Catwoman, Deadman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Teen Titans, Supergirl
Hawkman, The Flash, Metal Men and more!

Wednesday Comics costs $3.99 and hits stores today.

Bolland's new coloring job makes this a must-buy.

The $17.99 price tag is kinda hefty for a slim hardcover like this, but the new coloring — by artist Brian Bolland himself — on DC’s just-released Killing Joke Anniversary Edition is really impressive! Check the scans below and you’ll notice that the new coloring is often a subtractive process, making everything look less gaudy and more refined. Interestingly, the yellow oval on the Bat logo has been removed everywhere.

I might just have to buy this (especially since I gave my copy away years ago…)!
