In the comments of my recent Toys You Won’t Be Ashamed to Own: Uni-Formz Green & Blue Lanterns post, Rea said, “Yannow what are the BEST DC figures coming out? The BLAMMOIDs!!! oh my goodness, too cute. :)”

As it turns out, Series 1 is coming out on Wednesday, so now’s a good time for a follow-up. One thing’s for sure, though — I won’t be categorizing this one under “Toys You Won’t Be Ashamed to Own”. Because while DC Direct’s Blammoids are bursting with originality, they’re way too cute for you to leave them sitting on your desk if you have a girl over.

Unless of course the girl’s a geek. In which case, she’ll probably be taking a few of the little guys with her.

My favorites in the Series 1 set have to be Firestorm, whose hair makes him looks like the coolest lighter ever, and the Joker whose lack of eyes give him the necessary creepy factor.

Set includes the BLAMMOIDS SERIES 1 MINI FIGUREs of BATMAN, JOKER, GREEN LANTERN, SINESTRO, AQUAMAN and FIRESTORM.

Funky. Chunky. Fun. Real compact – with real impact!

BLAM! A funky, chunky collection of boldly designed toys that pack a lot of punch in squatty body!

POW! A striking, hyper-stylized twist on the world’s greatest heroes and their biggest foes. Too tough to call small – you’ll want to collect them all!

Packaged on a blister card, each measures approximately 2.5” to 4” tall with three points of articulation.

Suggested Retail Price: $64.99

(Bonus parting thought: Whoever writes the solicitation text for these things is having a lot more fun than their counterpart over at DC Comics).

I can’t even count the number of action figure lines DC Direct does — most are based on existing storylines and/or after a particular creator’s designs and therefore some are much cooler than others, but for the most part they’re all fairly traditional figures. Which is why it’s so fresh when they do things like getting UDON to do character designs for their AME-COME line.

Now comes the vinyl, urban toy styles of UNI-FORMZ from Monster 5. The first two releases were Batman and Superman, naturally, and the third is GL. Take that Wonder Woman!

Don’t get me wrong, the 2 green ones are cool and all, but the “Power Glow” that was originally solicited would’ve been kind of a lame variant, especially seeing how that would make 3 green Green Lanterns.

But as I was updating Midtown’s site (for those who don’t know, I’m the webmaster for MidtownComics.com) I was very pleasantly surprised to find out they ended up taking a very different route with the third version.

Aside his two green buddies, this blue guy really pops! And donning the uniform of the Zen-like Blue Lanterns, the cocky Hal Jordan grin is even seemingly transformed into a big happy smile.

Like all the UNI-FORMZ, this rockin little dude is 8” tall. He’s scheduled for release in January 2010 and you can save 10% if you pre-order him now from Midtown.

Some of this stuff looks pretty cool!

Midtown wanted to put something up in the stores to hype pre-orders for Watchmen Movie tie-in merchandise: the action figures, busts, props & replicas, plus mention all the books, etc. Honestly some of this stuff, like the busts, look pretty cool but I didn’t think blowing up DC Direct’s promo page from Previews was going to be very exciting, so I made a new poster from scratch. It’s headed to the printers and should go up in both stores soon. Then I have to make a simpler “civilian-friendly” version just hyping the book and maybe showing a figure to go in the window facing 7th Ave…

Thanks to DC for coming through with the art assets! :)

Sorry, I mean blow-up action figures.

I realize this might be old news, but is it just me or does this Power Girl look exactly like a blow-up sex doll here. All that’s missing is a hole for a mouth. Supergirl’s looking pretty pornified, which is par for the course, although she’s looking more like an adult porn-star here than an underage one. (For the record I usually like Ed McGuinness’ stuff).
