The gaming community is buzzing about the upcoming Catherine game from Atlus. Is it a dating sim? A puzzle game? A twisted fantasy game about cheating boyfriends? The answer is: Yes. It’s all 3.

The demo for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 version of the game has been out a week and already, there’s tons of questions about this rather mature title. If you’ve put down your controller and are feeling relatively confused, you’re not alone. Here’s 5 things you’re gonna want to know about this upcoming title…

#1 — Catherine is made by the Persona Team. The game is the first Atlus title for the current generation of consoles and is a new undertaking promoting erotic and very adult-oriented themes.

#2 — Classify this game as an Puzzle-Action-Horror-Survival-Dating game. You’re going to find yourself very busy traversing puzzles, navigating through dating hell and dodging some very spectacular nightmares.

#3 — We’ve seen this game before? First hinted at in the PSP game Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable. The main character Vincent appears at Club Escapade on certain days but is only referred to as “Man Drinking Alone” in his dialogue boxes. On a certain day (after nailing the right choices in the pop-up), a picture will appear and will speak more about his relationships in the game. This is your first preview of his troubles, which you are then told that they are nothing that you need to worry about.

#4 — The gameplay takes place in Vincent’s nightmares where his scaling of a giant wall-like puzzle is an actual personification (pun intended) of his unfaithfulness to his girlfriend.

#5 — 2 girls: Catherine with a “C” and Katherine with a “K”.

Catherine releases on PS3 and 360 July 26th. Atlus is going big for this release with a special “Love Is Over” deluxe edition that has the game packed in a Pizza Box and includes a T-Shirt, Boxer Shorts, and a Pillowcase.

Simply put, it seems that for gamers playing the title online, the entire world will be put into a dark tendency for an undetermined period of time. Though things will be harder, a dark tendency will mean there are pathways that will be opened that weren’t accessible before as well as better loot drops.

It just may be a little too tempting to resist for those already playing.
