Yeah, this is essentially the True Blood portion of the podcast, although we do get into Walking Dead and Falling Skies a bit.

AMC has announced that when The Walking Dead returns, the premiere episode will run a full 90 minutes. This premiere event will kick-off the new season starting Sunday, October 19th at 9/8c as well as kicking-off a two week long Fearfest on the network. Six episodes of season 2 will air from October through mid-December with the show taking a break and returning with the final six episodes set to star airing on Sunday, February 12th at 9/8c.

It’s a thirteen episode season for the graphic novel turned cult television series (more than double the order from last season), but with the hiatus mid-season, many are wondering why the break in the first place and whether or not the break could hurt the show in the long run.

If you’re one of the many just oozing with anticipation for the next season of The Walking Dead to start, AMC is throwing you a small but very juicy bone this weekend. During the season 4 premiere of Breaking Bad AMC will debut the first look at the second season of The Walking Dead. Breaking Bad is currently being called “the best show on television” so there should already be tons of viewers tuning in when it premieres Sunday, July 17th @ 10pm/9c on AMC. Most likely, it’ll probably receive a bigger boost in ratings thanks to this little treat.

Season 2 of The Walking Dead is set to premiere this coming October.

Q: What’s Terminator Salvation: Cold War about? I hear at one point a Terminator fights a bear?

A: There are two parallel plot-lines: One concerns a Russian submarine crew coping with the immediate aftermath of Judgment Day; the other concerns a band of human resistance fighters battling the Terminators in the snowy wilderness of Alaska. And, yes, at one point a Terminator fights a grizzly bear! It’s funny… I threw the grizzly into the book just for the hell of it, and that seems to be everybody’s favorite scene.

Since man first rocketed into space, he’s had but one thought on his mind: how to totally do it in zero-g. Though reports of real-life astronaut hanky-panky are apocryphal at best (whenever asked, both Russian and American scientists flat-out refuse to answer), we can still boldly go where no one has gone before at the multiplex. So let’s take a look at the top ten movie scenes that made us rethink the term “close encounters.”

10. The Immaculate, Face-Hugging Conception, Alien (1979)
OK, so technically it’s not sex, but damn if that alien doesn’t know how to get people pregnant. Slap a face-hugger on anyone and several hours later, bam: alien babies popping right out of your stomach. I guess if you really wanted to talk about “sexy,” we could have gone for Sigourney Weaver stripping down to her undies as she prepares for deep freeze, but what can I say… There’s just something about hot alien-on-human action that really fires me up.

Scientists abroad are studying a rare breed of Mexican lizard, the axolotl salamander, which may hold the key to human limb regeneration. Salamanders are well known for their ability to re-grow limbs after amputation, but the axolotl has the ability to regenerate jaws, skin, organs and parts of its brain and spinal chord, and do so at a much faster rate than normal salamanders. When an axlotl is injured, its wound is quickly covered with a stem-cell like growth, out of which sprouts the replacement body part.

In movies like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Jack, genetic aging disorders are treated with whimsy. They’re chances for us, as an audience, to reflect on what adult life really means through the eyes of a child. But for Brooke Greenberg, being a teenager trapped in the body of an infant isn’t all life lessons and magic.

For the past sixteen years, Greenberg has maintained the appearance and development of an infant, baffling researchers who have been unable to identify any previous known genetic disorder in her genome. Brooke’s condition is so unique, in fact, that scientists now believe her body may hold the key to eternal youth. Ah, dentists. As the song goes, they have a talent for causing things pain. But with new advances in the field of dentistry, the pain might be more fleeting than you think. And it’s all thanks to Star Wars. Well, kind of.

Presenting the Cool Plasma Blowtorch (that’s cool as in cold, though the technology is also pretty nifty), the latest advancement in dental care that kills plaque, cleans your teeth, and looks exactly like Mace Windu’s lightsaber. Plasma is an ionized gas, the fourth state of matter (after solid, liquid, and gas), and is usually hot. For example, the center of stars are made of hot plasma, and if introduced to your face, would probably blast it apart. Same with both Sith and Jedi lightsabers, hence the cauterization of wounds and the melting of metal when a Jedi tries to chop through your blast door.

I just posted a Q&A with Bill Hader full of geekery, but the part most apt to you guys are these tidbits about Hader’s first comic book:

Q: You also have a comic book arriving in stores today. Tell us about the plot, and how you ended up writing it.

A: It’s a one-off Spider-Man story and it takes place on Halloween. It involves Spider-Man getting mistaken for Ronnie, a drunk dude dressed up as Spider-Man. Seth Meyers and I worked on it over the writers strike. We met all the Marvel guys at the Marvel Christmas party a year ago. I’m friends with Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction and they got us in. We met Joe [Quesada, editor in chief of Marvel] and he was like “Write something for us!” and we said, “OK!” 

Q: Do you have any aspirations of being in a superhero movie yourself?

A: I don’t know. I don’t really have the build for it. I’d like to play a hick or something if they ever did a Scalped movie. Or a criminal in Criminal. Or a ghoul in the next Hellboy.

Q: If you could be any villain in the next Spider-Man movie, who would you choose?

A: Badger Teeth (read our book!)
