Star Trek news!

This is unusual… a few Trek-related news bits this week:
- In a Rotten Tomatoes interview, Grindhouse actress Sydney Tamiia Poitier, daughter of the legendary Sidney Poitier, says she auditioned for a role in JJ Abrams’ forthcoming Star Trek movie for Christmas 2008. Was it for Uhura? Don’t know.
- I might’ve mentioned here before about Tim Russ directing an independent Trek film called Of Gods And Men. Now he says the first part will in all likelihood be released next month.
- And the big news of the day – Nichelle Nichols will join her fellow TOS comrade George Takei in a recurring role on the TV show Heroes.

My aunt at the AP said Syd Poitier indeed auditioned for Uhura but also another female lead as a yeoman/love interest. Apparently she’s trying to “transcend” a “black” role the way Rosario has seemingly tried to buck the actress of color thing. Apparently Kimberly Elise has looked at the Uhura role as well. Kerry Washington got a script but she’s busy.
Why didn’t Terrance Howard go to Comic Con with John Favreau? Would’ve made a big splash as the representation for people of color was seemingly small in that department. Then again, lily white Hollywood has made Comic Con so top heavy it will likely implode in another year…

Howard was at San Diego. Go back a page and read my “San Diego news round-up” post.
