Looking at our Fall TV Hotlists, we’re a little bit divided on Glee here at PCS.
Alex said simply, Glee sucks. And Matt commented snarkily: “Come for the singing and dancing, stay for the ABC Family-quality angst and drama. Blecch.”
Sirui, however, happily proclaimed Glee to be her absolute favorite show:
I never knew that what I had always been waiting in a television show is a censored cover of Kanye’s Gold Digger by middle-age mostly white folk pretending to be high-schoolers, but Glee has shown me the truth. I like the cleverness and humor, but I LOVE the song-and-dance. LOVE.
What do you think, people? Are Alex & Matt just grumpy TV watchers? Is Sirui high on life? Love it, hate it, or just wonder what all the fuss is about — we’ve got a sneak preview of this week’s episode.
In this week’s episode of Glee, called ‘Vitamin D,’ the students from Glee take to a girl vs. boy glee-off. In the below clip see the boys take on a mash-up performance of Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life” and Usher’s “Confessions Pt. II.”*
*I have a confession, too, Usher: Shamefully, I kind of enjoy Glee. I don’t even know why! At first I thought it was the music, which I did enjoy initially. But honestly I’ve always hated musicals — except for Absolute Beginners, if that even counts. I just cringe when someone’s talking and then you know the lights are going to go dim and they’ll break out into song about their dilemma. And there is a bit of that here. Maybe I’m the flipside of Sirui, liking the music but loving the humor. But whatever the reason, I do like Glee — it’s feel-good, funny, and just fun.
Check the preview in the player to the right and possibly feel the love.

My Glee history has been spotty. I LOVED the pilot, wasn’t much into episode 2, episode 3 had me considering dropping the series, and then episode 4 made me fall in love all over again and now I’m willing to tolerate Will’s horrible wife for the chance of feel good moments like the dancing football team.
Also, an Absolute Beginners reference! Now I have images of a dancing Ray Davies in my head. :)

If it makes anyone feel better, I DO like American Idol…
Anyway, if I have to have my name attached to a PCS-spawned controversy, can’t it be the Ben Stein religion one? :)

lol…Matt you’ve gotta jump into the lifestlyle posts. That area’s chock full of controversial fun! But seriously…American Idol?

I like the occasional musical, at least I know they’re singing it, but these overly produced, lip synch fests are a bore. I really can’t stand Glee. I’ve tried to watch it and if I’m lucky I chuckle, but it’s forced. The music numbers are a train wreck. If this is what people like to see for prime time television, consider me happy to be on the outside.

And I dislike American Idol. :) I admit, I am not up on pop music at all. A lot of the songs on Glee I am hearing for the first time. I didn’t know a single Beyoncé tune before “Single Ladies” was featured in episode four. But still… I do like the musical numbers even though they’re over-produced “lip synch fests,” as Ernie aptly put it. More, though, I like certain characters (the supporting cast) and want to see them achieve their dreams.

Who knew that Glee would some a point of contention? I will admit, Glee is getting mixed reactions from me as well. I love-love-love how corny it is (and I think it is intentionally corny), but the episodes are indeed hit or miss– the humor can be forced, and some of the music numbers are less than inspired. I’m going to keep watching because I am stubborn, but will I keep enjoying it? Let’s wait until midseason.
