I really thought this review was good, and somewhat agree about the mishandling of stark. However, is no one catching that he's drunk at the end?

Of all the twists, i was kind of apathetic about them, yeah, but tony stark relapsing, that was huge to me. They've been hinting that it was going to happen since Civil War, and here it is. Day-um.

I have to disagree with the reviewer's opinion on the reaction of Iron Man. I don't have the book, but by looking at the page that the reviewer so graciously provided I need to disagree. It looks like Tony was lost in thought, not completely out of sorts. His lack of communication to Maria was because his brain was elsewhere, not because he was a moron.

My two bits.

I agree that this felt rushed and anti-climactic. For something that was years in the making, I was expecting a great deal more nuance from Bendis and a much more interesting ending. Issue 8 almost seemed like an afterthought. The series as a whole had some great moments, but--starting with the deus ex machina Skrull reveal ray courtesy of Mr. Fantastic--it quickly went downhill. To fend off an invasion the Skrulls had planned (since 1993 apparently), all they needed to do was gather every hero in New York? Seriously? I very much wanted to enjoy Secret Invasion (and certainly like some of the tie-ins), but more often than not found myself making excuses for Bendis. He had been planning this for years, so the pay off had to be great. Not so much.

I totally agree with your assessment of the issue and the series in general. A lifelong fan of Marvel, this series has led me to reduce my pull list to a single monthly issue of Uncanny X-men just to keep my collection current. This is merely going through the motions. I did not enjoy the ending and felt everything was rushed and many of the references were just convoluted due to the narration and the art. Terrible.
