Sam Milai @ the Cartoon Research Library

Posted by: Rich Watson on October 21, 2008 at 11:14 am

For those of you in the Central Ohio area, the Cartoon Research Library, on the OSU campus here in Columbus, is having an exhibit of the work of Sam Milai, a cartoonist for the Pittsburgh Courier, a prominent black newspaper. The bulk of the work on display here is from the 60s, and addresses many aspects of the civil rights movement. There are also a series of profiles on prominent blacks throughout history. Well worth seeing.

This looks like an excellent exhibit! Since there’s little chance I’ll get to Columbus anytime soon, I’d love to hear more about the kind of cartoons and correspondence. Notice any interesting work worth mentioning specifically?

I thought his profiles on prominent blacks in history was especially noteworthy. Single pages each, done in a combination of pen, pencil and zip-o-tone that really jump off the page.
