midtown-gift-cardSince Recommendable’s kickoff, I managed to catch swine flu and strand myself at my parent’s house with nothing but Deer Park spring water to keep me company. (Apparently, the Chinese’s equivalent of walk it off is have some water.) There is good news too—Midtown Comics is sponsoring June’s Contest! And, and! I get a mention in their newsletter! Hooray! Welcome, Midtown kids—I am expecting much quality commentary from yous. And if any of y’all is thinking sending me a get-well-soon-gift, I won’t say no a Blammoids Green Lantern. He’s so chunky and so delightful!

Now remember, to get at that Midtown gift certificate (that’s twenty bucks towards comic goodies!), please post a comment to June’s Kickoff Contest blog entry below by July 1st. And do read the actual entry– psst, it explains how to win!

I don’t think I apply for winning the gift card, since I work for Midtown, sadly, but one of my favorite graphic novels ever is DEMO by Brian Wood. (Though I haven’t actually re-read it in quite a while, so maybe it isn’t as amazing as it used to be? ;P). It is about normal people with different abilities, and the situations they are stuck in. My favorite one was I think issue #6, about the girl who everyone sees her as how they WANT to see her, and not her actual face. Love it. So I hope you enjoy it as well. ;)

I don’t have much experience with Brian Wood, but I do remember flipping through DMZ and DEMO, and think that they LOOK really cool. The character designs are hot!!

I love the Sinestro and Firestorm figures too. Wicked ’stache and pony, respectively.

I’d like to recommend reading Fables, written by Bill Willingham with fantastic art by Mark Buckingham and others. It is now in graphic novel form so it’s easy to catch up on the lives of its cast of characters from many beloved fairy tale stories. There are not enough words to describe how fantastic the stories are contained in these volumes! Intelligent is my favorite description of Fables. Hope you agree.

Fables is one of my favorites right now. Intelligent is a good way of describing it, and the writing’s gotten a certain maturity to it too.

I loved the Good Prince arc. Quite tender and feel-good!

One of my favorites too. Easily Vertigo’s most consistently enjoyable book.

So as I said in my e-mail, my recommendation is as follows!

Chew #1 and #2 by Image Comics. How awesome is this title? Let me> throw some scenery at you. It is in the distant future and the world> has been decimated by the bird flu. Thusly, the F.D.A. has risen to> the highest Government law enforcement agency and chicken (real> chicken anyway) has been outlawed. Now if that all doesn’t seem crazy> enough, here’s the most interesting part, the main character Tony Chu.> So why is this title called Chew? Good question. It is because Mr. Chu> is a strict, by-the-book, detective who has a most interesting talent.> He gets psychic readings by…you guessed it…TAKING A BIG OL’ BITE> OUT OF IT! Anything….except beets that is. Guy has to have something> to eat without visions right? This means if he eats a carrot, he sees> the entire life span of that carrot from the time the seed is planted,> to when the farmer harvests it, to the point he takes a bite out of> it. Or, perhaps, taking a nibble of a murder victim so he can solve> the case! BAM! Instant classic.

All enjoy and rejoice!

I’m pretty sure this is not the kind of book you MUST READ to critique comics, but it does sound fun!
