Prince of Table Tennis

By: Katherine Dacey

pingpong.jpgVIZ Pictures just announced that it will be screening Ping Pong in three cities this spring. Based on a popular manga by Taiyo Matsumoto, Ping Pong might best be described as Prince of Table Tennis–that is, a shonen sports comedy that freely mixes slapstick, melodrama, and lots of shop-talk about the fine art of ping pong:

Best friends “Peco” Hoshino and “Smile” Tsukimoto have been playing ping pong since they were little kids. While the unique and brazen Peco plays to win and loves the sport, the quiet and introverted Smile thinks of it as just a way to kill time with friends, and only plays because he idolizes Peco. While Smile is the more talented player, he frequently and intentionally loses to Peco out of a misguided sense of friendship. However, after Peco is badly beaten by his rival, Dragon, in an important inter-high school tournament he suddenly quits the game leaving Smile to become the newest ping pong celebrity. He begins training hard for the next championship, waiting for the return of his hero and best friend, whom he is destined to meet in one last match.

The film was directed by Fumihiko Sori, and was nominated for eight Japanese Academy Awards in 2003 including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Cinematography. I haven’t seen the film, but I’m guessing those ping pong tournament montages are worthy of a David Lean epic. For more information on Ping Pong, click here.

I saw this when it first came out in Japan back in 2002. I highly recommend Ping Pong. The soundtrack is very upbeat and techno sounding, but the cinematography is awesome.

I’m disappointed I missed the press screening! I guess I’ll just have to visit the Imaginasian Theater and see it in April…

If you don’t want to wait you can probably buy it at like Virgin or other video stores that carries foreign films. I do recommend watching in the theaters though. Nothing beats the experience of a ping pong tourney on the silver screen!

I haven’t seen this yet, but I highly recommend the manga, “Ping Pong,” as well as “Black and White” (I think that was the English translation), the latter of which was recently made into the animated film “Tekkon Kinkurito” (http://www.tekkon.net). In fact, pretty much anything by Taiyo Matsumoto is worth checking out, now that I think about it.

I’m with you, Tally–I love seeing stuff on the big screen, so I think I’ll just hold out until April.

Haven’t read anything by Matsumoto, so I’ll have to add that to my to-do list, James!

I saw this movie a few years ago as part of the Phila.(PA) film festival. It was a very good sports movie which focused on the interactions and emotions of the young people who were involved with this exciting olympic sport.
