Star Wars Battlefront

By: Howard Brown

Through the years, there have been all manner of Star Wars games. Let’s see, we’ve had everything from fighting games, to action games, to roleplaying games, to massively multiplayer games and more. This time LucasArts is trying to provide us with something different by adding an interesting slant on the action/shooter genre. With the development duties resting in the very capable hands of Pandemic Studios, players will be able to experience the epic battles they’ve only been able to watch and read about up to now.

Star Wars Battlefront puts gamers in command members from the Rebel Alliance, Galactic Empire, Republic Clone Army or Seperatist Battle Droids. With 20 different soldier types, 30 different weapons, and 25 vehicles, players will be able to engage in battles with a wide variety of tactics and abilities available. The basic premise here is that you can finally play out the memorable battles of Star Wars lore with 12 locales across 10 planets such as Tatooine, Endor, Hoth and Geonosis.

The single player action unfolds through three different game modes. Instant Action mode will throw gamers in the middle of a battle when they just want to get to killing as soon as possible. Galactic Conquest has gamers trying to secure enemy command posts throughout the galaxy. Historical Campaigns is the story driven mode that lets gamers experience all of the battles from Star Wars Episodes I-VI. Players will be able to play Historical Campaigns through perspectives of each of the differing factions.

A Star Wars game just wouldn’t be complete without the vehicles. The 25 vehicles available come in both ground and air types. Some of the vehicles included that can be piloted are AT-STs, speederbikes, X-Wings, Republic Gunships and more.

Xbox and PS2 owners can fight with up to 16 players online while PC gamers will expand that up to 32 players (plus AI controlled units). As is a mainstay with online games these days, the title will support voice communication through headset accessories. Star Wars Battlefront will see release on September 21st and we’ll let you know how it turns out.
