Previews for January ’07

Posted by: Rich Watson on December 30, 2006 at 8:46 pm

BOOK OF THE MONTH:
It Rhymes With Lust GN (Dark Horse)
Matt Baker is one of the unsung old-school greats, best known for his “good girl” art on characters like the Phantom Lady. In this re-release of what’s considered the first graphic novel (from 1950), he teams up with writers Arnold Drake and Leslie Waller for a crime noir tale. Includes a new introduction by Drake.

Other notables:
Storm Premiere HC. Eric Jerome Dickey’s definitive Storm mini-series gets the hardcover treatment.
Are We Feeling Safer Yet? A (th)Ink Anthology TP. New Keith Knight. Nuff said!
The Adventures of Spawn #1 Director’s Cut. Collecting the Spawn online comic (done in an animated-like style) in print for the first time. Includes lots of extras.
Kana’s Island #1. Mark Page’s all-ages fantasy series gets a wide release.

The list:
Perhapanauts: Second Chances #2 (of 4)
Firestorm the Nuclear Man: Reborn TP. An actual Firestorm trade paperback! Didn’t think DC was gonna do it, but kudos to them for getting off the dime and making one. Art by Jamal Igle, cover by Brian Stelfreeze.
Tales of the Unexpected #4 (of 8). Lead story pencils by Eric Battle.
Gen13 #4. Pencils by Talent Caldwell.
Stormwatch: PHD #3
The American Way TP. The collected edition of one of 2006’s best black-themed comics. Written by John Ridley, with pencils by Georges Jeanty.
Spawn V3 TP, Spawn #166
Elephantmen #6. Never read this series before, but based on the little blurb in Previews regarding the character Sahara, it sounds pretty interesting. May have to give this a look.
Emissary #8
Black Panther #24. Written by Reggie Hudlin. Civil War tie-in.
Blade #5. Early 2008 Glyph Awards contender for Best Cover! Civil War tie-in.
Heroes for Hire #6
Nextwave #12 (of 12)
Squadron Supreme: Hyperion vs. Nighthawk #1 (of 5). Yes, that’s right – the Marvel versions of Superman and Batman in their own “versus” mini. How much do you think prep-time will be a factor in this fight?
Iron Man: Armor Wars TP. Old-school action with ol’ Shellhead, co-illustrated by Mark (MD) Bright.
Adrenaline #3 (of 8)
Public Enemy #3
Gold Digger 15th Anniversary Special #2, Gold Digger #81, GD Sourcebook #2, GD: Throne of Shadows 4-pack, GD: Tangent #1-2. Story and art by Fred Perry.
Roach #3 (of 4). Story and art by Robert Roach.
Scarface: Scarred for Life #2. Art by Dave Crosland.
“Lady Death: The Odyssey” by Steven Hughes print. Not a comic, but still noteworthy, this is an 11” x 17” poster of the popular bad girl character illustrated by perhaps her definitive artist, the late Steven Hughes.
The Red Line #2 (of 4). Written by Geoffrey Thorne.
Lucifer’s Garden of Verses SC 4-pack. Story and art by Lance Tooks.
Never Made to Last: Stories of Suburban Folklore GN. The acclaimed real-world teen comedy, in trade paperback form. Story and art by Steven Walters.
Internal Fury #1-4. I reviewed this prison-break action comic awhile back. Don’t waste your time with it; it’s melodramatic and highly overwrought and a little self-indulgent.
