I get more of a Lily Allen/ Amy Winehouse vibe from Clubbing but I'm not gonna lie, my motivation for reading it was the comparison to Dawson's Creek. I started to read it and as soon as I got to the corned beef hash recipe (sweep rotten meat from butchers floor, mix in moldy carrot etc)- I knew I could relate Charlotte and then there's evil grannies so you can't top that!

Our joke had nothing to do with homosexuality except for the fact that Mike Carey and I both happen to be men. Adan's joke would have been no less funny(?) had Voodoo Child been written by a woman named Carey Micheals who was also my cousin that I had sex with.

The Lady Nocturne Thing I was aware of, but I thought nobody else would be and would just be distracting.

And in regards to Katherine. I agree that there is no shortage of material for girls to enjoy across media, but I think for the most part BAAPPAS is focused on direct market American comic publishers, and I think in that regard young female readership is under represented. Tokyopop, Minx, and such of course are somewhat a part of the Direct Market, but as you say they mostly serve the bookstores and fall under a different umbrella.

Even my comments are long-winded this week!

You can certainly change your complaint, as this new one actually makes sense.

When you complained about asian girls with white guys, I assumed you were reading Asian Hotties Pressed Against White Bodies magazine or something, and not the Minx books.

lol@common groundz. hug it out!

adan: i suppose if i was now to switch my complaint about plain janes to be how they have like 5 girls and none are asians that would be picking at nits or something huh

also, regarding JR jr -- i don't like his stuff on everything but i do like it on a lot of stuff. like igor kordey, they're both good at ugly, rough & mean stuff and conversely not such a good pick for pretty things (like good-looking women)

I chose my words carefully.

Also, I forgot this in my last one, but it's Stephen Colbert's Alpha Squad Seven LADY NOCTURNE a Tek Jansen Adventure, just a little nitpick. And personally I thought this idea was much better before they actually made animated shorts and a comic. It rather kills the joke, and matter how funny they are it's just impossible to live up to the premise that Colbert actually wrote this book (and presumably part of a series at that).

@Josh Fenderman: JR Jr. may have a distinctive art style, but "distinctive" doesn't necessarily equal "good."

Girl-centric and universally appealing, the line is succeeding in its quest in creating content for an underserved and untapped market.

Maybe it's an under-served market from DC and Marvel's standpoint, but if you wander through the graphic novel aisle at Borders or Barnes and Noble, you'll see plenty of girls reading manga that's squarely aimed at them. I understand why DC is eager to expand their share of the teenage girl market, but frankly, I'd rather see them invest more in CMX than pump out the comic equivalent of Anyone But You.

@the homosexual: Yeah, it was a gay joke (as well as an incest joke), and it was pretty nice, thanks for
noticing.

...Oh wait, were you being sarcastic?

For my tastes it's "glaring" and "odd" that Ron Lim gets any work at all. I've always found his stuff to be stiff and bland. I've heard him described as the nicest man in comics, so really I understand how he gets work, I just don't understand why people buy it.

John Romita Jr. is a fabulous storyteller with a fantastic sense of structure and a distinct visual style. Mark Bagley does absolutely nothing for me; I guess he's good for consistently quick output on books I'll never buy.

More importantly, Plain Janes didn't even have an Asian girl in it, so no, Clubbing is not the first Minx book in which an Asian girl doesn't hook up with a white guy; it's actually the third.

As an example of my skewed worldview, I just had the following conversation with Adan:

Me: I think Clubbing is the first Minx book that didn't have an asian girl hooking up with a white boy.

Adan: That wasn't a white guy (in Re-Gifters), he was Hispanic.

Me: Oh, same thing.
