PCS TV: Peter Molyneux - Fable 2 Interview

August 17th, 2007 by Howard Brown Bookmark this post diggdel.icio.usYahooMyWeb

Peter Molyneux is from the old guard. As a designer of videogames for over 20 years, he’s in a league of few and has a pedigree of innovation. That track record has seen him take huge risks all for the sake of pushing the art form. We spoke to Peter recently about Fable 2 as well as some of his previous works, Fable and Black & White, to find out exactly how his latest work is the culmination of all he has done before. To hear a candid talk on topics including but not limited to what happened with Fable and how he and his team look to rectify that with Fable 2, look no further.

This is the Fable 2 interview, with Peter Molyneux.

  • 18. Ben  |  August 26th, 2007 at 12:21 am

the original blew me away. I still play it. I talk about it all the time. This sequel looks beautiful. And by the way Mr. Molyneux is talking about it, it sounds like he’s learned some important lessons from Black and White and Fable. I can’t wait!!!
Oh and, John Preston, the song playing is from the Samurai Champloo (anime) soundtrack. I forget which cd, but it’s called “Mystline”

  • 19. Enzo  |  August 26th, 2007 at 1:56 pm

i liked that they used the champloo tracks in the back….fable was one of the greatest games on xbox…..the extended version was great and fable 2 will be the best

  • 20. John Preston  |  August 26th, 2007 at 8:43 pm

ah thanks a lot Ben :) definitley looks awesome and with his ideals the game with just overall be great.

  • 21. aaron  |  August 26th, 2007 at 11:44 pm

Peter said that Fable wasn’t as good as he was hoping it would be and I still enjoyed that game and spent many hours playing it. I am expecting so much from Fable 2 and I have no doubt in my mind that it will meet my expectations. Also I love the passion that Peter has towards his games and gamers. It makes me feel passion for the game too.

  • 22. aaron  |  August 26th, 2007 at 11:48 pm

I just decided to add that Fable was one of the best RPGs created because of the cool features it has. It’s my second favorite RPG (Oblivion is my first).

  • 23. Zach  |  August 27th, 2007 at 12:29 pm

Let’s just say that if the elder scrolls and the Fable series had a commercial together; it would end up like the Mac vs. PC commercial. The Elder Scrolls is based on their DOS like system used in ARENA. But Fable is totally new and is maxing out the potential that a game can get for emotion (ok so Mac isn’t newer than windows…). That and gameplay are the lifeblood of every game.

  • 24. Deb  |  August 28th, 2007 at 2:40 pm

Thanks to Peter and the original Fable team, it is the greatest RPG I have ever played. Yes there are some glitches but it is still great. One thing I hope is in Fable 2 is that the hero doesn’t age faster than everyone else around him, I always felt I had to rush to keep from getting old. I have the Xbox 360 now and when Microsoft announced you could play the Xbox games on the 360 have been playing the Lost Chapters because there just isn’t a RPG out there to compare. Thank You !

  • 25. armen  |  August 28th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

this game is going to be as good as halo3 if not better

  • 26. Cam  |  August 29th, 2007 at 10:07 am

Just have to say thank you Peter and everyone out in Lionhead, and too all those who have helped with fable and are currently working on Fable 2. You guys/girls are doing a wonderful job and its people like you that make the best games in the world. With all the emotion and time spent in them you have made games that we will all remember and desire to have more of.

Peter - your ideals are fantastic, if only every game producer/developer was like you. Your ideas have made rpgs change for the better (the ones that have change, though there are still many that wont leave the cookie cutter alone)

I support what you and everyone is doing in Lionhead on fable 2, i doubt that you will read this, but if you do i like to say, Thank you.

The Dog idea is great, i think that having a companion like that is the best idea (dog person here so can just imagine wht my dogs could have been like in this situation, though there a little small >.> )

The combat style that you have implemetd is fantastic, at first I couldnt see how 1 button would work, but once i saw/read the details about it i can see that its going to be Great!.

Hope that all of you are like me and cant wait for Fable 2, its going to be a long hard wait, but it will be worth it

  • 27. Ryan Stocks  |  August 29th, 2007 at 1:46 pm

  • 29. Ryan  |  September 1st, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Hello, id just like to say that games like this really inspire me and im checking all the updates.i loved fable one because it had some of the best things ive ever looked for in a game. i love the idea of a dog system (im an animal lover and even with lifeless fake pets i go insane and kill whoever touches or wounds my pet.) also i think that this whole love thing is perfect. it really works and it can really change peoples lives espicialy kids who arent popular or dont feel love or come from problemed families. i know this is true cause i come from a really problemed family and ive always loved games cause you can feel like your the most important person or loved or at least have people who arent attacking or insulting or just overall making your life terrible.especialy with junior high kids because they tend to have the hardest time.it also can do the same for people in dead end jobs or stuck in lives they hate. ive witnessed first hand how much these things can change someone, not just for me but my freinds and many others.Peter is my idle for so many things. i love his ideas and that of his team and whether or not they ever read this message id like to say that fable one was awesome and had me playing until my dog broke the cd. i wish all the team many thanks and i hope fable two beats all their expectations and does great and allows them to really succed. and i hope that the water continues to be better then bioshock. =^)

  • 30. christopher  |  September 2nd, 2007 at 2:00 pm

  • 33. Billy  |  September 19th, 2007 at 10:08 am

Fable is shit and Fable 2 will probably be shit as well hahaha, stupid dog kick it in it’s nose if it pee’s on my boots hahaha

  • 34. Adam  |  September 19th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

I dont generally post on topics, for games or anything else really. But, i felt i needed to say something here.

I am a PC gamer; i love Call of Duty 2’s multiplayer, I absolutley adore Operation Flashpoint’s simulations and if i had 1 thing to create, if ever i suddenly came across several oceans of gold, would be Hidden and Dangerous 3.

I know what your thinking, why am i on here looking at Xbox only fable? Because the PC version was the best RPG i’ve ever played (bar Morrowind … maybe … just because it was so open to everything)

The oroginal game made you feel like a child again, it made you want to be a hero - unlike a lot of newer games, where the stealthy, black-robed, hooded character always looks more fun. Fable 1 made you want to save the day, rush in on your shining white horse and help all the poor children of the world. Ofcourse, this was all not acheivable in the production of the game - but Fable 2, so far, looks like it wil give you that. And to quote the famous movie “This is Spinal Tap”, it looks as though it will give you all that, but you’ll also receive more, a lot more.

I can’t wait for Fable 2 to come out, even if it is only to Xbox - i already have set up a borrowing of a mate’s Xbox for whatever that date may be.

Thank you Peter, thank you Lionhead, thank you for all those who allowed them to do their thing!

    -Adam

  • 37. Jenny  |  September 27th, 2007 at 12:40 pm

hi, i’d just like to say that all of my family is a big fan of fable. My dad has now played the Lost Chapters for the 9th time and i dont think he is planning to stop any time soon. Fable 2 looks brilliant. The dog looks really cool… but when your character ages to about 60 odd…. does that mean the dog lives up to 60 aswell?

  • 38. Robert Pelham  |  September 30th, 2007 at 10:34 am

I can’t get it to start, I have flash player 9! UGH!

  • 39. Michael in Colorado  |  September 30th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

    Tally

I’ve never played Fable…let alone own a 360…but this game makes me wanna try it out. Can I play as a woman and have her be the heroine instead of the guy?

  • 43. Billy  |  October 7th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Fable sucked was way too short, and Xbox sucks and Xbox 360 graphics sucks, make it for the PS3 game engine would look mad, just look at heavenly sword…well anyways lets hope this fable isn’t a disaster as it’s predecessor.

  • 44. Skycrier  |  October 8th, 2007 at 5:54 am

Did I hear the mastermind behind Fable say it was a letdown?! No way.

Fable was an edgecuter of games in its time. Fable 1 is already a landmark. It’s going to be simply amazing when Fable 2 comes out, knocking its own ‘landmark’ down and making room for the new.

Just waiting to hold a copy of Fable 2 is a catastrophic process. The day it comes to stores is the day I find SALVATION.

    Long live Lionhead and affiliates.

  • 45. Dr. Cornwallis  |  October 13th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

I believe that Fable 2 looks amazing; looks being the key word. In my opinion, Fable: The Lost Chapters is an amazing game - probably my favourite. This is because the storyline was GREAT, there weren’t too many or too little characters, there was always something going on, the time setting was good, the world was big but not too big, and the music, sound effects, and voices were all amazing. The only down side to Fable was the mediocre graphics. On the contrary, however, the graphics in Fable 2 look absolutely wonderful. I’m doubting Fable 2, though, because it seems like there might be TOO much to do, and TOO many places to go. Another thing is the cities; they’re supposed to be large and flourishing - too much for me. I preferred the small parishes and the medium sized towns. Also, I don’t like the idea of guns in the game. I preferred the medieval weapons. ANOTHER thing is the time setting. Colonial times doesn’t really seem to tickle my fancy. However, the new features sound good, and I can always trust Lionhead to create an amazing game.

  • 46. Wet-Schnozz  |  October 15th, 2007 at 9:44 pm

I have one question: is the ‘Hero’ going to grow the horns when evil, and all of that?

  • 47. Howard Brown  |  October 17th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

    Howard Brown

Tally, not only can you play Fable 2 as a woman, Peter has told us that as a woman you can even be the one to get pregnant.

  • 48. Tally  |  October 19th, 2007 at 1:10 pm

    Tally

Oh heeeeeeeeeeeeell no…this woman AIN’T getting pregnant! No epic adventure waits for maternal leave! Screw that! I’ll still play as a woman though and the husband better have my dinner ready when I get back!!!
