I’d forgotten about this movie considering the ads have been worming their way through the underground channels for nearly a year. It appears that Paranormal Activity might be the indy-horror hit of early fall if Paramount’s figures are any indication. The movie opens nationwide on October 9th, but consider the success of the movie so far after just one weekend…which we’ll discuss after the jump. See the trailer, too.
Paramount is taking a very progressive marketing approach towards getting the word out on this movie. Playing strictly to the college crowd, the movie opened this weekend on only 33 screens nationwide. With shows airing ONLY at midnight in select markets, the movie completely sold out across the country, earning a per screen amount of $16K, for a total estimated gross of $535K! That’s insanity, and apparently Paramount thinks so too, and is banking on college-twitterers to tell a friend and spread the fear.
The trailer looks like The Haunting meets The Exorcist, meets The Blair Witch Project to me, and if you don’t get enough of camcorder-cam horror, this one’s right up your alley. Next week the movie opens to over 100 screens playing on more standard (all day) schedules, but in the mean time, check out the trailer. If you’re in Los Angeles and can score a ticket, I’ll see you at the Arclight in Los Angeles where people are currently shitting their pants.
