No Green Lantern for Short

MTV is reporting that Columbus Short has turned down the role of Green Lantern in the upcoming Justice League film. A former choreographer for artists such as Britney Spears, Short has been building his acting resume with roles in films such as Accepted and Stomp The Yard, as well as a recurring role on the short-lived NBC drama, Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip. Other actors being considered for the role of GL include rappers Common and TI (both appear as father and son in the upcoming Denzel Washington/Russell Crowe drama American Gangster), as well as Tyrese Gibson (Transformers, Waist Deep).

“‘Justice League’ is going to be dope, it’s going to be huge. But it’s not the movie for me.”

Short is the second actor to turn down a role in the George Miller-helmed superhero film, following Jessica Biel, who had been in talks to star as Wonder Woman.

While the search for Justice League’s Green Lantern continues, Warner Bros. has tapped TV writer/producer Greg Berlanti to direct a solo Green Lantern film, according to Variety.

    I wonder if the JLA Green Lantern will be John Stewart (aka a black man) but the solo film will cast a white actor as Hal?

    And if Warners plans on reconciling that?

    If those actors are actually passing on the part, I wonder why. Are the deal terms brutal?

    Not sure Reg, but in the MTV piece, Short said the script was too ‘popcorn’ for his tastes.

    If that’s the reason all those actors and actresses are passing on parts in the movie including Biel passing on the WW part, it’s going to be pretty hard to be optimistic on the outcome.

    Needless to say, I’ll still go see it either way. Have to support our comic book film adaptations.

    It’s definitely an interesting situation. I’d say more that the script, the casting of JLA is the most important factor in making or breaking the film. We really have to believe in these people as a team, even the characters who prefer to fuction alone (ex. Batman).

    Bale and Routh not being a part of the film doesn’t surprise me. Their respective franchises really don’t mesh very well.

    But the big thing is that Warner Bros. is really trying to get this movie done before the writers strike can have an effect on it. I don’t even think it’ll start filming when the say it well (which I think is supposed to be February of next year). Any other DC films they may be planning, I’m not holding my breath waiting for those, either.
