Damn, Ellis is a master storyteller.

Damn, Ellis has forgotten how to plot. Pages of decompressed exposition, a lack of conflict between characters (well, one character and one plot device masquerading as a power animal) and a static tone do not compelling reading make. Thematically, if you’re going to comment on white men misunderstanding indigenous culture, you’ll look less of a prat if you can avoid being a white man who is mystifying indigenous culture to sell a story. Where’s the irony? The drama? The anticipation? Good thing it has pretty colours or it’d be keeping someone’s fish and chips warm.

Sometimes a slow and steady pace is needed.

I enjoyed the New Universe 20 years ago. The words “Emmett Proudhawk” brought a smile to my face.

aj raises a few solid points… the artwork hooked me in the first four issues, and it really seemed like it was going somewhere, but 5 issues in i definitely feel like i should be more aware of what the real conflict is. i’ll agree that the slow and steady exposition is pretty appropriate for a book that is supposed to explore a cosmic event, but at the same time there’s the kid in me quietly pleading for a fistfight or something. and i do agree that using native americans as shorthand for anything “mystic” or spiritual is pretty hackneyed. still, ellis hasnt really disappointed me yet, (except for ultimate galactus, but even that had its redeeming qualities). im still looking forward to seeing this book shape up.
