Obsidian Entertainment, long known for developing sequels to popular Bioware titles such as Neverwinter Nights 2 and Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic 2, has confirmed a June 1st release date for their espionage RPG Alpha Protocol.

SAN FRANCISCO (February 25, 2010) – SEGA® of America, Inc. is proud to announce that Obsidian Entertainment’s long awaited Alpha Protocol™ is hitting store shelves this summer. The espionage game, a fiercely original take on the role playing game genre, will launch in North America for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system, the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC on June 1st, 2010.

“The wait has been worth it. It is time for an RPG to go beyond fantasy and space,” said Sean Ratcliffe, Vice President of Marketing for SEGA of America. “The genre needs a shot in the arm, and renowned developer Obsidian has delivered. Alpha Protocol will be the absolute best it can be, and we look forward to revealing fresh aspects of it to the community in the upcoming months.”

With a plot torn from today’s headlines and more twists than a season of “24”, Alpha Protocol brings a new level of modern day realism to the world of RPGs. Tasked with uncovering the perpetrators behind a tragic missile attack on a passenger jetliner, players dive into a story rich with characters and locations to discover an international arms-dealing conspiracy. Through their actions and choices, players direct the outcome of the game as they ultimately decide who to befriend, trust or kill.

In Alpha Protocol, players assume the role of rookie spy Michael Thorton and are given unprecedented control over the development of his abilities and interactions with other characters. Customizable character skill-sets, attributes and weapons all play an important role in allowing gamers to tailor Thorton to their play-style.

We knew there would be a videogame for Kick-Ass. It seems it’s going to be for the PlayStation Network and iPhone. Yeah, it’s gonna be one of THOSE licensed games…

New York, N.Y. February 23, 2010 - WHA Entertainment, a publisher and
developer of entertainment games based on leading IP Franchises, today
announced it is releasing Kick-Ass for the PSN and iPhone April 15th.
Kick-Ass is a superhero action game based on the upcoming theatrical
movie by the same name. Players will be put to the test as they take
on the role of any 1 of 3 super heroes based on the super characters
featured in the movie.

Kick-Ass is a fully 3D action fighting game set in the third-person
perspective, where the player can play and control modern day super
heroes based on the super characters found in the film of the same
name. Gamers will be able to play as the three primary characters in
the film – Kick-Ass, Hit Girl, and Big Daddy. The story-driven game
draws heavily from the strengths of the intellectual property; an
action combat game where the characters finally grow sick of the crime
around them, and decide that they will do something about it.

Featuring multiple environments within New York City, players will be
faced with eight story missions and encounter frantic super hero
action as they face petty thugs and powerful mob bosses. Players will
also have a blast with sub-missions and mini-games, to add even more
gameplay to the mix. Staying true to the intellectual property, the
game will feature visceral combat and plenty of gore, as the player’s
main goal is to bring justice back to the city, no matter what the
cost!

Featuring multiplayer local co-op gameplay, Kick-Ass brings an
unsurpassed integration of Facebook and Twitter to the PSN Network.
Many of the Kick-Ass missions are given via friend requests from the
FACESPACE social networking site.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm was released as a PS3 exclusive a couple years ago. Namco Bandai is announcing that the sequel will be released on PS3 as well as Xbox 360. Our little, helpful hint to Namco is this: Sales of the first Ninja Storm weren’t less than desirable because it was exclusive to the PS3 and it’s lack of an install base at the time. The sales were low because aside from the gorgeous graphics and speed of gameplay, it was just a bad game.

Santa Clara, Calif., (Feb. 23, 2010) – Another storm is brewing as NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. announced today that it will be releasing NARUTO™ SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 2 for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. Based on the popular NARUTO SHIPPUDEN animated series from VIZ Media, LLC, the game will drum up a squall of new features and enhancements, an extensive character roster as well as incredible visuals that are sure to please fans and gamers alike. NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 2 is scheduled to be released throughout North America in fall 2010.

“With NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 2, we are continuing our legacy of providing the most authentic ninja action experience, for which the Ultimate Ninja series is known, and are excited to bring this larger-than-life game to both the PlayStation 3 system and Xbox 360,” said Todd Thorson, director of marketing and public relations with NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. “This latest iteration not only improves upon the series’ signature gameplay, but further propels the NARUTO SHIPPUDEN interactive universe to greater heights with new features and unprecedented visual detail.”

Developed by CyberConnect2, NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 2 faithfully recreates the anime series and fully immerses players in the mythical ninja world with new expansive environments, missions, battle systems and gameplay modes. Taking players through the NARUTO SHIPPUDEN story arc, daring ninja warriors must strategically recruit the right support characters to ensure victory against any and all opponents. With the winning combination, players can easily unleash bigger and more explosive Team Special Techniques to obliterate enemies who stand in the way.

With more than 40 characters to choose from, engaging in bigger and more epic cinematic boss battles has never been this intense. Players will encounter a host of Akatsuki ninja in the game and, in a shocking story twist, see Sasuke wearing Akatsuki gear. With its signature battles, interactive environments, original Japanese voiceovers and a host of unlockable items, NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 2 is a tornado of fierce ninja action that cannot be missed.

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Feb. 23 – Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced today the release of Heavy Rain® exclusively for the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. Developed by Quantic Dream, developers of the critically acclaimed Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain takes players on an emotionally engaging and mysterious journey where the story path is shaped as players play the game. Each decision made will have an impact on how a particular story plays out, and Heavy Rain takes players through more than 60 emotionally powerful scenes that feature contextual actions, realistic visuals, and varying paths that lead to a unique ending.

Heavy Rain is a gripping psychological thriller filled with countless twists and turns in a gut wrenching search for the Origami Killer. Each player’s experiences are based on their own actions as they are faced with various choices and consequences, each of which will lead them on an emotional roller coaster. By diving into the four lead characters’ minds, the player will have insight into actions they should take before making their next move, discovering that every action or decision, big or small, will have a tangible impact on the fate of the characters.

“Tapping into the power and technology of PS3, Quantic Dream has pushed gaming boundaries to the limits, placing emotion at the forefront of the Heavy Rain experience,” said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President, Product Marketing, SCEA. “This dark and mysterious story delivers a setting and mood that truly attests to the true film noir feel of the game. We’re eager for fans to enter this world and experience their own unique story, one that can only be had on PS3.”

Players will dive into the minds of the four main characters – an FBI profiler named Norman Jayden, a retired private detective named Scott Shelby, an architect named Ethan Mars, and journalist named Madison Paige – gaining an emotional attachment to their pain, joy and worries. Ethan Mars has a seemingly perfect life with a wife and two kids until his son is killed in an accident and then loses his wife. Scott Shelby is a private detective hired by the families of the victims of the Origami Killer in hopes of preventing another strike. Norman Jayden is an FBI agent on the hunt for the Origami Killer scouring for clues and working with the local police department. Lastly there is Madison Paige; an impetuous journalist who has somehow gotten mixed up in the investigation of the Origami Killer.

To create the interactive story-telling experience that Heavy Rain delivers, developer David Cage spent more than a year writing a 2,000 page script of linear dialogue and worked with a cast of 70 actors to bring the script alive. Possible only through the power of the PS3 system, Heavy Rain took a development team of 220 highly skilled people over the course of 170 days to create the game’s extensive motion capture action and unique interactive narrative.

Many gamers were impressed with the Batman game published last year. It seems that Warner Bros. isn’t blind to that fact as they have recently acquired a majority stake in Batman: Arkham Asylum developer, Rocksteady Studios.

BURBANK, Calif., February 23, 2010 – Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group announced today the acquisition of a majority stake in Rocksteady Studios, a privately held developer of interactive entertainment targeted at teens and adults, continuing Warner Bros.’ pattern as one of the industry’s fastest growing games publishers.

“Rocksteady demonstrated its professionalism and extraordinary development abilities with Batman: Arkham Asylum,” said Kevin Tsujihara, president, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. “This arrangement is a great strategic fit and we are very pleased to solidify our relationship with this talented development team.”

Founded in 2004 in London, England, Rocksteady specializes in developing action-adventure video games, including Batman: Arkham Asylum, one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2009. The title has enjoyed robust sales, shipping over three million units worldwide, and has garnered numerous industry awards.

“We are proud to strengthen our association with WBIE, a world class publisher that we have enjoyed working with since we began developing Batman: Arkham Asylum,” said Jamie Walker, studio director, Rocksteady Studios. Sefton Hill, games director, added, “The Rocksteady team is very much looking forward to creating more great games based on widely recognized Warner Bros. brands like Batman.”

Warner Bros. continues to grow its games business through key acquisitions, building internal development capabilities, leveraging its global video distribution infrastructure, and focusing on developing major games franchises such as Batman, Mortal Kombat, The Lord of the Rings and LEGO.

“With the successful release of Batman: Arkham Asylum, a franchise that is a key focus for Warner Bros., Rocksteady has proven that they have the expertise to create hit games with mass appeal,” said Martin Tremblay, president, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “We are currently working with Rocksteady on the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum and look forward to bringing the continuation of the franchise to fans worldwide.”

Motion Control is on the way for PS3, but you're gonna need yet another peripheral to make it work...

Motion control was the talk of the town at E3 2009 when both Sony and Microsoft went official in with their plans to challenge Nintendo and the Wii in that space. SCEA has now solidified those plans with a release window as well as another bit of news about the peripheral.

The peripheral will be released worldwide in the fall of 2010. This piece of the puzzle isn’t that big of a shock. Where things do get interesting is the fact that the Motion Controller (tentative name) will require the PlayStation Eye for use. Whether the unit is released as a standalone for consumers who currently have the Eye Toy or if there will be a bundle that includes both peripherals to lessen the cost for those who don’t, this does open up the possibility that the total cost of ownership for the Motion Controller may be higher than previously thought. We’ll have more as it breaks.

The previous announcement teaser of High Moon Studios’ Transformers: War for Cybertron was a welcome surprise. Now, this reveal trailer shows off even more.

Transformers: War for Cybertron features two distinct storylines: the AUTOBOT campaign tells a story of heroism to save their home planet against overwhelming odds, and the DECEPTICON campaign tells a story of an unquenchable thirst for power to control the universe. For the first time in a TRANSFORMERS title, fans will be able to play the game with their friends through team-based online co-op, or go head to head in a variety of intense, online multiplayer game modes. The game features a sci-fi art style that introduces to fans the entire living, metallic world of CYBERTRON, as well as all-new visualizations of the iconic TRANSFORMERS characters in their original Cybertronian forms.

Bioware has announced the first expansion pack for Dragon Age: Origins.

Titled Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening, the game will task players with rebuilding the ranks of the Grey Wardens as well as investigating how Dark Spawn are able to still terrorize the land without having an Archdemon to guide them.

Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening, BioWare’s next thread in the Dragon Age: Origins tapestry, occurs following the events of Dragon Age: Origins and puts players into the role of a Grey Warden Commander entrusted with rebuilding the order of Grey Wardens. In addition to rebuilding the ranks of the Grey Wardens, you will be tasked with uncovering the mystery of how the darkspawn survive after the slaying of the Archdemon. How players choose to rebuild their order, resolve the conflict with the mysterious “Architect,” and determine the fate of the darkspawn are just some of the many intriguing moral choices that will shape each player’s heroic journey.
Square Enix has announced that the application forms for the Final Fantasy 14 Beta test has gone live.

While we do know a few things about Final Fantasy 14, there are a ton of things we don’t know. We know it’ll launch worldwide in 2010 on both PS3 and PC, but we don’t know exactly when. Hell, though we know that the beta applications are live, we don’t even know which of the phases you may be chosen for or when they start. Don’t let that discourage you though. Head over to the Final Fantasy XIV homepage for more informtion on the beta recruitment process.

SCEA has announced that PSP owners can now purchase digital comics via the PlayStation Network.

Gamers who have upgraded their PSP to firmware 6.20 will have the Digital Comics Reader app. The service is launching with about 550 comics today with additional updates weekly. Marvel Entertainment, Disney, IDW Publishing, iVerse Media and others are providing select titles ranging from G.I. Joe, Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, TRANSFORMERS, Star Trek to Archie Comics and more.

The comics will carry one of three price tags including $0.99, $2.99 with the majority selling for $1.99. Select titles will be available for free.

With digital comics becoming even more of a reality across more devices, do you find that $2 and $3 is too much to spend for something that you can’t hold in your hand? Not to mention what has traditionally been a collectible medium?

Hey, remember that link I gave yesterday to a Publishers Weekly article on AfAm lit in today’s marketplace? Well, this is the cover image. I thought you should see it because it’s gotten more than a few people pissed off.

You can read more about it at the link, but basically, the original image is from a book about black imagery in America, taken by a professional photographer, and used by PW with her permission. It’s a striking and remarkable image on its own – but here, on the cover of a major book trade magazine, representing an otherwise excellent article about current AfAm literature, one has to question its appropriateness. PW editor Calvin Reid (a former Glyph Comics Award judge) is quoted in the article at the link above as believing the image was “ironic” and the accompanying copy as “amusing and memorable.”

I dunno. If he honestly didn’t believe that this cover would garner such a negative reaction, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I think he should’ve gotten a second opinion. Why choose an image that is highly evocative of the 70s to represent an article about how AfAm writers want to break free from the stereotypes of the past and reach a wider audience with their work? I would argue that this cover undermines the article it’s supposed to represent. At the very least, this amounts to an error in judgment on Reid’s part which could’ve been easily avoided had he stopped and thought about it for a minute. (And couldn’t they have put the space for the subscriber address someplace where it’s not blocking the face?)

We always wondered exactly what our friends at High Moon Studios were up to following a majority of the Vivendi Universal titles being cancelled after the merger with Activision. Now we know the answer.

Actiblizzion (sorry, I still love calling them that and I coined it, so don’t try and steal it) today announced Transformers: War For Cybertron. Following in the veins of what they’ve been doing with the Spiderman and X-men videogame franchises, the company is releasing non-movie related titles based off these licenses. There are no details released about the game so far other than this trailer. Considering the talent demonstrated in High Moon Studio’s previous works such as The Bourne Conspiracy and Darkwatch, this could be a title to watch out for.
