multicultural comics: Marguerite Dabaie

hookah1We hear a lot about Palestine on the news – so much that it can be difficult to know what to believe and what not to believe. Very rarely, however, do we get to hear their story directly from them. Marguerite Dabaie is an American of Palestinian descent, and her heritage plays very heavily in her comics work, as I discovered a couple of years ago at MOCCA when I picked up her comic The Hookah Girl and Other True Stories. This is good stuff: opinionated, straightforward, yet entertaining and enlightening as well, with a delightful drawing style to go with it. Volume two of The Hookah Girl is now available, so if you’re looking for a fresh take on an often-misrepresented culture, do yourself a favor and check her comics out.
