Multicultural comics: Chari Pere
Posted by: Rich Watson on June 10, 2008 at 10:04 pm
I met Chari Pere at MOCCA a couple of years ago. She happened to be sitting next to the artist I originally intended to talk to (Margarite Dabaie, whose book The Hookah Girl and Other Stories made my 2007 Top 10), but then I saw that she had some good books too, so I sampled her stuff and have not regretted it. Chari’s Jewish heritage plays a vital part in her work, and she combines a lively art style with gentle humor and fun. Today I received her latest work: A Yearly Shpritz of Jewish Bits, a calendar full of traditional and newer Jewish humor in comics form, combined with a plethora of Jewish holidays and portions from the Torah. Well worth checking out.
