Multicultural comics: Blue Beetle

Posted by: Rich Watson on April 12, 2008 at 12:07 pm

I read a trade paperback of the DC superhero title Blue Beetle, and it’s not bad. The third incarnation of the character is a Hispanic kid, and the approach taken with this series has been very much in the classic vein, with an actual supporting cast, a learning curve for the character in the use of his powers, and a steady stream of villains. While it’s gotten a bit of love online, it hasn’t really translated into big sales so far. This month’s issue, #26, (due the 30th), will be entirely in Spanish, with the English script as bonus material. Writer Jai Nitz talks about the story.

Blue Beetle’s first 25 issues ended up being one of those reads that just comes out incredibly good when taken as a whole. The last year or so of the series was a number of one or two-parters that ended up interlocking (in hindsight) for a great last three issues.

I highly recommend the book. One of the most fun things DC has done in ages.

I second that.

Blue Beetle is is easily one of the best DCU reads. Great art, great writing and great characters.
