MTV’s “Scarred”

Posted by: kayode on April 6, 2007 at 9:58 am

Let’s face it, MTV hasn’t been relevant since the early 90s. It’s had its moments here and there, but it’s long-since forgotten what it was supposed to be about. Even MTV2 has forgone showing videos in favor of repeats of Jackass and Pimp My Ride 24/7. Thank God for MTV Hits and MTV Jams. But I’m not about to act like I’m not glued to the screen whenever The Real World is on. Not that it offers any meaningful insight into the lives of young, diverse individuals. It’s just fun to see them fall into every trap the producers have set up for them. And no matter how self-aware these idiots are of their “roles”, they still end up playing themselves nine times outta ten! The Real World has become the funniest sitcom on television.

But now, they’ve got a new show called “Scarred”. If any of you have been watching MTV, I’m sure you’ve all seen promos for it; homemade videos of young men, whether they be on skateboards, bikes, or something else, taking messy spills resulting in broken bones, gashes, and/or copius blood loss. The images are definitely gruesome, and hearing the shrill cries of pain just makes it worse. And the whole time, I’m just asking myself, “WHY?” Why would anyone find this entertaining? At least in a horror movie 1) it’s a movie, and 2) there’s, at the very least, an illusion of context in which it’s not just two hours of people being hacked to pieces. This show doesn’t seem to exist in any other context beyond showing actual people getting their bodies mangled. I’m sure there will be the requisite follow-up interviews with the people who got jacked up, but I’m not getting the impression that the show serves any real purpose. Do people really want to watch this? Do you really want to see a forearm snap in two when it hits pavement? Do you really want to see someone twist their leg 90 degrees in the wrong direction?

I blame it all on America’s Funniest Home Videos (which is STILL ON THE AIR!!). From the moment that first man got whacked in the babymakers, I knew we were slipping down the poop-slide to Hell. Now if you’ll excuse me, Saw II is on cable again.

I’m a dumbass? You can’t even spell “dumbass”!! And “your” is possessive! What you want to say is “you’re” as in “you are”. And it’s “would”, not “wood”. Is English not your first language, or something?!?

I can understand people finding Jackass funny. Those guys are glutons for punishment, and you never really see them get seriously injured (I know I never have). This is just people trying to pull off extreme sports and failing. . . .painfully. The friends aren’t laughing at or with the guys, ’cause the guys aren’t laughing either. They’re in pain, and have no desire to be in that kind of pain. I for one can’t imagine breaking a bone in my body, and I hope I’m one of the lucky ones who never has to experience that pain in my life.

Scarred should add to its disclaimer that not only can these injuries leave you “SCARRED”… but they could also leave you PARALYZED. (I’m guessing it would be a downer if the injured telling their story was a paraplegic. It’s a bit more serious than a scar. And it could have happened to half of those people.)

okay honestly…first time i saw this was last night and i thought it was good…its not funny that they get hurt but if they are willing to send it in then they must not have any problem with it…i think its also a good lesson…taught me not to try shit that i dont think i can do……it is gross and disturbing…yet so are alot of things in life….its better then the “reality” that MTV has been showing….atleast now this is real…and they have alot of proof through the scars and the sounds and the tapes….rather then things like The Hills or my super sweet sixteen…..atleast its something some people can relate too…unless you dont ever do anything stupid….

anyone that doesn’t like scarred is a complete idiot. this show is one of the best shows MTV has ever had, besides videos. like kelsey said, this IS reality. not the crap they’ve been showing, such as laguna beach, living lahaina, & the hills. this is real life & if you think it’s a horrible show, it’s just proof that you’re scared of what REAL life is like.

Nicole, I don’t know if maybe you were confused by my avatar, or something, but I’m a dude. Just to clarify.

Second of all, Christina, gimme a freakin’ break (no pun intended). “Scared of what REAL life is like”? Watching Jacoby Shaddix “host” this show, it seems abundantly clear that showing viewers “what real life is like” isn’t as deep as you’re making it out to be. It’s “Watch these dudes bust their asses real good! WOOO!!!! *devil horns*

Avatar

Kelsey April 26th, 2007

its not devil horns your crazy…its a sweet ass show that is fun to watch…and what does the host have anything to do with it? ohhhh because he was in papa roach??? big deal…..im surprised you knew that….and just because he is a star doesnt mean the people in this show are just doing this shit for attention…if you dont notice they all seem to love what they are doing in these videos…they arent doing them to be preppy….are you one of those guys that like laguna beach…because as a girl…i will tell you thats sooooo fake and nothing is like that in life.

I have *had* an injury like that, and not from anything as cool as skateboarding. I shattered my ankle and fully dislocated my foot from my leg. My toes pointed backward and to my butt. It was the single most painful thing in my life, and I’ve given birth without medication, too! (The trauma adds to the pain while the babyjoy takes away from that other pain)

It sucked. it sucked, sucked, sucked, and I do NOT Enjoy re-living it when I watch MTV. I physically can’t breathe for two minutes after I accidentally see one of those clips. The accidents suck and the surgery and rehab REALLY suck. People should not enjoy watching this. I don’t mind that it’s out there, but man.. life is real. You can be a vegetable or a one-legged limper in an instant. Once good crack of your skull, one good twist of bone, and BAM. . Life change!

So, think about the stupid stunts. MTV says they won’t accept admissions of video. So where do they get this stuff?

i can’t believe someone greenlighted this piece of shit show. if tv has to hang on to viewers through shock value and ‘taking it to the next level ‘ then what comes next? ‘touch the stove’? ‘cannibal island’? ‘ow, my balls’? this may be real life but if you like to watch it you’re fucking sick. and if you need a show like this to learn what NOT to do then you’re also a fucking idiot.
