Remake? Reboot? Play with semantics as much as you like, but David Cronenberg is in negotiation to resuscitate The Fly franchise, which could be incredible news depending on your perspective. Keep up with me here. Cronenberg’s The Fly (1986) was actually a re-imagining of the Kurt Neumann 1958 classic staring Vincent Price. Cronenberg’s movie upped the gore (as well as the science), is probably one of the best genre movies of 1986 (which already had strong competition in ALIENS and Blade Runner).
The Fly was already a remake/re-imagine, so Cronenberg’s attempt at a SECOND lightning strike is unheard of. Then again, Cronenberg is not slouch. Directing tons of hits since 1986, with Eastern Promises, and A History of Violence not the least of them, my guess that Cronenberg sees a little more gas in the tank.
I’m calling it now: Viggo Mortensen’s going to be involved somewhere.
Now, where is the inevitable remake of The Thing. Hollywood leaves no stone unturned and nothing is sacred.
