There’s a big splash about the ‘leak’ of Microsoft’s top secret Courier tablet (a big deal if Apple’s Tablet is right around the corner), and i’m feeling kind of ‘meh’ about the whole thing. I’d love a lightweight and simplified computer experience to carry around, and the current size (and pricing) of new laptops is more appealing than ever.

I’ve been waiting on a reason for something to pull me into the tablet world. Unfortunately, the interface of the new Courier not only looks complicated, but it reminds me of those old Trapper Keepers that we used to lug around for school. I know that the touch-screen thing is all the rage, but is ANYBODY excited about physically WRITING again? Microsoft seems to think so. My handwriting is atrocious. Maybe I’ve got some kind of low-level carpel tunnel??? Either way, I’m feeling very underwhelmed and VERY concerned about the direction of portable computing…

Does that make me old? See the video of The Courier in action inside.

I’m a long time commenter, but a first time reader and I have to say that this idea is the greatest. There have been oh so many times that I needed to write down something and I didn’t have a piece of paper or a pen to jot down the most mundane of information. But not anymore.

Now all I have to do is turn on my top secret tablet. Wait for it to boot up. Log in. Wait for it to initialize. It crashes. Wait for it to boot up again. Log in again. Open up the journal menu. Find the stylus-thingy…Find some shade because I can’t see a darn thing on the friggin’ anti-glare screen. Go back into the journal because I accidentally touched the screen when I didn’t want to and wound up on the web so I can write down, “Don’t forget to buy milk.”

I feel more productive already.

My handwriting has been gone for 10 years. On top of that, this thing is perhaps oddly/unfortunately named as Courier is a very ugly mono-spaced font (not from MS, but probably installed on all PCs).

Anybody remember the old cartoon “Inspector Gadget”? Remember his niece Penny who always had that cool black computerized notebook? Well, this is what the new MS Courier Tablet reminds me of….The Inspector Gadget Computer notebook.

“Go-Go Gadget Notebook!”
