Cantarella is a good one to check out. Much less historical and much more fantasy, brutal and beautiful.

Excellent use of research here — I couldn’t agree more about Higuri’s over-romanticization of Ludwig (particularly in the fact he never seems to age and, therefore, dies young and still beautiful).

Her Cantarella is an interesting twist in this formula — she allows for a great deal more ugliness in her portrait of Cesare Borgia.
