Link o’ the Day: Parade of Manga Presidents

By: Katherine Dacey

If you’re still on the fence about who to vote for tomorrow, perhaps you’ll want to read this oldie-but-goodie from Shaenon Garrity’s now-defunct Overlooked Manga Festival: The Parade of Manga Presidents. She tracks down images of American presidents from FDR (who makes a cameo in Tezuka’s Adolf) to Bill Clinton (who shows up in a title called Sanctuary), and even manages to scare up an image of our current Commander-in-Chief brandishing a pretzel. (And yes, the manga-ka manages to capture W’s special brand of cluelessness.) As always, her essay is an immensely entertaining and generously illustrated with examples, allowing you ample opportunity to compare Gerald Ford’s mangafied likeness with the real thing.
