Tokyopop 2009 Shipping List

By: Katherine Dacey

Tokyopop has just announced its publication schedule for spring and summer 2009, and its line up has something for everyone: full-color comics, fanservice spectaculars, light novels, and a new title from Fruits Basket creator Natsuki Takaya. I’m a little dubious about a few acquisitions—Tantric Stripfighter Trina could be awesomely bad or just plain bad—but on the whole, their offerings look solid. I was pleasantly surprised to see the return of Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, Dragon Voice, and Pet Shop of Horrors: Tokyo, all of which I assumed were D.O.A., and was delighted to see that Tokyopop had licensed more work by Jyu-Oh-Sei manga-ka Natsumi Itsuki (Demon Sacred, debuting in April). Alas, no Suppli sightings… we may need to start a letter writing campaign!

With the notable exceptions of Bizenghast, Tantric Stripfighter Trina, and Orange Crows, Tokyopop’s latest OEL titles all have direct ties to television shows (Battlestar Galactia, Star Trek), video games (Warcraft, Starcraft), movies (Return to Labyrinth), or young adult novels (Avalon High: Coronation). It’s a shame that Tokyopop dropped great titles like RE:Play and Off*Beat in favor of such assembly-line products. I know it makes good marketing sense, but does the world really need another Meg Cabot manga?

Below is Tokyopop’s publishing calendar for January – August 2009. New titles are highlighted in red.

The preview pages I’ve seen for Tantric Strip Fighter Trina didn’t light me on fire, but the premise is off the wall enough that it might just work.

I wonder whether we can bar comments from You Are Anime from appearing here—they’re just poaching content from MangaBlog.

Ah, Tokyopop, you’ve still found ways to disappoint me! I actually clicked over to this list from MangaBlog just to see if Suppli had a release date yet. I just assumed that they canceled the series to spite me and all the other fans…

But if a letter-writing campaign is what’s needed, I’m in!

@Ken: There were a few panels in the Tokyopop catalog, and the art looked OK. Hard to say what the “action” (ahem) sequences would look like, but it certainly has the potential to be fun. Or awful.

@Michelle: I’ll talk to Jon–it’s really frustrating that they’re scraping her content!

@Rena: I’m serious about a letter-writing campaign–check back here in a few days for more details. I’m really frustrated that Tokyopop licenses interesting, cutting-edge josei, only to pull the plug when it doesn’t find an immediate audience. Suppli seems like a series that needed more time to build a following. Given how positive the reviews were, I’m surprised they didn’t hang onto it for its prestige value.

I’m so there for a Suppli letter writing campaign (or blog-campaign as the case my be). No question, this is my biggest disappointment in terms of TP’s publishing plans right now.

Count me in, too! I’m extremely happy that Silver Diamond has managed to stay aloft, but Suppli is a big disappointment.

Owch, no Mobile Suit Gundam: Ecole du Ciel? :(
I’ve been hoping against hope that the next volume would see the light of day. Even a horribly, horribly slow and delayed light of day. Not seeing it listed at all is somewhat depressing.

I’m glad, at least, that the next Twelve Kingdoms novel has a date now as I really enjoyed the first two. There are a couple of new licenses that I’ve held some interest in too that I’m quite glad to see do have dates now but… well. I want my mikimoto gundam story :|

Meh. Can I at least be somewhat amused that Warcraft: Legends, Vol. 5 (of 5) is coming in April, whilst Warcraft: Legends, Vol. 4 (of 5) is coming in June? ;)

@Ephidel: You’re a better proofreader than someone at Tokyopop, because that gaffe came straight out of the catalog! I caught a few others (Trinity Blood was listed as being 10 volumes in one place and 11 in another), but missed that one. Thanks for the tip–I’ll correct it!

@Kate and @Michelle – I actually went so far as to make “Save Suppli” buttons when I thought it was cancelled, but I haven’t had time to make a blog post about it or decide how to distribute the buttons other than giving them away for free at conventions to people who seemed interested.

Lalalala we should probably discuss this over email then start the blog campaign rolling.

@ Katherine Dacey
I guessed it was probably an error out of the catalogue.
I should admit though, that after I wrote that last time, I realised that volume 4 was listed for a February release as well (so, 4 was listed for both February and June, with volume 5 in between in April) so I wouldn’t like to say whether one had been listed twice, or whether one had been listed the wrong way around, or both, so it might not be so easy to correct ;)

There is nothing on this list to convince me to abandon my boycott of Tokyopop. I’m so, so mad that they dropped Off*Beat. Grrrrrrr.

That bugs me too, Isaac, since I had just really heard about it and considered starting it when I learned the conclusion would be delayed indefinitely.

Hey, Isaac, I share your disappointment about Off*Beat, a title that, like you, I really liked. (I’m also frustrated that Qwan has been dropped from Tokyopop’s list.) As emotionally satisfying as a boycott sounds, though, it’s hard to fault publishers for dropping unprofitable books. I’d love to see publishers look for alternative ways to bring outstanding volumes to fans–perhaps through digital distribution, which is much less costly than print. Heck, I’m still holding out hope that someday I’ll see the final volume of Club 9, despite DH’s vigorous denials.

Besides, if you did boycott Tokyopop, you’d miss out on some great series like Jyu-Oh-Sei. It’s crack in manga form, I swear!

Where’s Nosatsu Junkie Volume 7?! Oh the throbbing agony of it all!!

On a side note, this list looks pretty good for supporting it’s other top Shoujo series, and older series like Samurai Deeper and Getbackers (you’d think those would have been dropped by now).

People, continue to collect those so-called dropped series, we may see them soon enough (well, after August 2009, at least).

Also, continuing the trend on listing items NOT on this list:

Fruits Basket Ultimate Edition 4 (out of 11, dammit!)

Seriously, who is buying these Battle Royale Ultimate Eds.? I normally wouldn’t have tried out Fruits Basket had it not been for the Ultimate Ed. Granted, the series itself will never get dropped, but still having the Ultimate Eds. would have been nice. And when Suppli gets back on board, I’ll try that too.

PS: There’s still some good Shoujo on this list. At least Tpop never forgot their core selling point.

There are several long-term series that are MIA from the list. Arcana 10, Queen’s Knight 13, Saver 7, Suppli 4, Never Give Up 9, Seduction more Beautiful 3, Platinum Garden 8, Vassalord 3. If you send TP an e-mail they sometimes don’t even respond or give a generic answer “we still are publishing the series.” My last e-mail took 6 months for a response. It just is a little upsetting when you give TP so much money for all these mangas just to have them drop them before completion. Arcana 10 was the last volume of the series too. Come on TP!!

Sorry to barge in, but i wanted to know if the Trinity Blood light novel series has been cut for good. TP was supposed to release the fourth novel of the first series (R.A.M) December LAST YEAR but it somehow didn’t make it but the local bookshop i asked about this to said that it’ll be released July 6th 2009 and yet i can’t find it. I am THIS close to crying and i refuse to read other titles until this one settles. If TP publishes 1 novel a year, and they’re currently 5 novels in out of 12, i might just die. The chances for the latter are steadily getting higher…

Thanks.

I originally thought that Trinity Blood had received the axe, but recently the Tokyopop twitter feed mentioned that it was still coming out (http://twitter.com/TOKYOPOP/status/1941554761). Sooo… I guess it’s just one of those incredibly slow books due to their reduced schedule.

OKAY. all Kingdom Hearts manga fans need to just stand up for volume 3.
all y’all! We’ve put up with tokyopop’s 9 month wait time inbetween volumes before, BUT THIS IS ENOUGH.
It was scheduled to come out December 30, 2008 BUT IT NEVER DID.

amazon.com AND this list claim that volume 4’s coming out in august. beg pardon? How can that be if volume 3 HAS YET TO COME OUT???!!!

This is insanity!
KH Fans! seriously. how much more can you take?
Japan’s had volume 3 since APRIL 18, 2008
For Reals? and vol.3’s only like 192 pages or so. It’s not even that big! COME ON TOKYOPOP.

All KH fans need to send in e-mails one-by-one during your spare time until they open their eyes and see that the DEMAND for KH is still HUGE, their SUPPLY however is LACKING!

Same goes for Fruits Basket Ultimate Editions and all those other books that just aren’t coming out! LET EM’ HEAR IT ! ! !

Hi, Iris! At the time this post went up (Dec 2, 2008) the third volume of Kingdom Hearts II was scheduled for December 30, 2008, so that’s why it wasn’t mentioned in this list. Nobody knew at that time (well, nobody not at Tokyopop) that vol. 3 wouldn’t come out as scheduled.
