1) Death Note is not a seinen, it is a shounen, it was published in Weekly Shounen Jump (Naruto, Dragon Ball, Yu-Gi-Oh! etc.) not very seinen isn't it?
And actually the very shoneness of the series is definitely a big factor of the huge buzz Death Note garnered in Japan, because it was an unusual shounen.

Also the editor insisted that at the end of Death Note, the hero should be punished for his evil actions. Because weekly Shounen Jump has many young readers (starting from elementary school) they feared complaints from parents. (yes Japan has socccer moms too)

Had the series been shounen, the ending might have been more unconventionnal.

2) The Hell Girl manga is precisely aimed squarely at girls under 12 years old of age despite the ridiculous rating of older teen made by the publisher (published in Nakayoshi the magazine where Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura were published) that's why the manga shows 12 year old girls who sell their souls.

I saw the anime (Ai doesn't go 2 skool) and the art is muuuuch better (better than Naruto lol) I haven't read the manga though... I heard that they made the anime 1st and that it's not the same writer.

I could imagine selling my soul for a really good bagel recipe (maybe H&H's?), but cake? Not so much.
