sparsness or starkness..,jeez are you on. The manga is designed like that to look grim. Maybe once you read upto volume 21 you will understand.

The 3rd mission is the last non-filler mission from the anime (the one in the buddist shrine). It ends in volume 8. And right after that we're thrown a bunch of incredibly bizzare plot twists that will totally draw you in. Believe me.

The first 8 volumes are nothing compared to the next block (vol. 9 - vol. 20). I cannot even describe the difference in sheer awesomeness!

Tollie: I was kind of liking the dog up until then too. I had visions of him scampering around in a lil' doggie version of their outfits and stuff. Ah well...

Popo: How many volumes in is the 3rd mission..?

The manga starts out slow, but it gets SO much better around the 3rd mission and after, trust me.

Yeah, the dog freaked me out as well. If it had been me i would have kicked the damn thing through a wall or shot it by 'accident'.
I can only hope that the manga finishes what the anime started. Although it wasn't a masterpiece the story had its interesting moments. As it is now there is to much left unanswered for it to be worthy of a full 5 star rating.
It would make a good addition to the manga but the true fans of the manga would probably hate the anime. I hate to say it but they usually have a point to hate it.

I think the manga's still ongoing in Japan, sooo.. hopefully they resolve some of things.

Kind of sad to hear the dog gag persists beyond that one instance though.

I have the anime of Gantz and i must say that i really liked the beginning of the show. (Except for that dog thingy that they did several times).
The ending sucked however because they managed to raise so many questions but failed to answer even one of them. I can only hope the manga does better in that regard.
