THE DEEMAN WROTE: " For some reason the only two movies I could think of with kids in them were Lost Boys and ThunderDome"

I recommend, "Letters From Iwo Jima", "Platoon", "Apocalypse Now", "Full Metal Jacket" and "Saving Private Ryan", which all feature young people. Wars are fought by the young, most of whom enter the military as an alternative to college. Any accurate depiction of war must therefore focus on teenagers. A story about recruiting practices (like my book) necessarily focuses on high school and college, where recruiters do their work. Also, comic books are mostly read by young people, who want characters they can identify with.

TheDeeMan, I also recommend the War comics of Harvey Kurtzman, who was a master of satire, social commentary and serious drama. He is one of my all-time favorites, and the reason I do so many humor and war comics.

By the way, sections of "Special Forces" will be appearing in the next WORLD WAR THREE, which features the kind of hard-hitting war journalism you want. Past issues have featured the incredible Sue Coe and Peter Kuper, both known for their editorial illustrations in the New York Times.

You may also enjoy NAT TURNER, which explores serious political issues in a truthful and accurate manner. BIRTH OF A NATION is a recent political satire I collaborated on with Aaron McGruder and Reginald Hudlin, who both are known for their controversial politics. TRUTH: RED WHITE AND BLACK is a book about racism in WW2, which invokes the Tuskeege Experiment. All of these books can be found in the public library, so you don't even have to give me money.

Thank you for your time. I applaud your quest for higher standards in comic books and your heartfelt conviction to battle oppression, injustice and disinformation worldwide.

Everybody check out TheDeeMan's comic at http://www.webcomicsnation.com/moniquem/gaak/series.php

For some reason the only two movies I could think of with kids in them were Lost Boys and ThunderDome. And fluff teen tv shows like The OC, MTV's The Hills, and One Tree Hill never popped into my head. Mostly because I've never watched them. So, what I SHOULD HAVE SAID was National Lampoon's "Kids of the OC/The Hills/One Tree Hill go to war". That's what I SHOULD HAVE said. But that's like a comic trying to explain a joke, so the effect is lost. Oh well. Hell, if the kids from ThunderDome did go to war it would be much more interesting. :) Dee

Gimme a break. "..."Special Forces is about teenaged hot bodies blowing shit up. All the best comicbooks are about fights and teenaged angst...This story is mre about teenagers growing up i the 21st century...". So, lets see, the kids from ThunderDome hit puberty and go to war? That should have unique insights into the War, just like Abbott and Costello's "Buck Privates" was SO much a commentary about a soldiers life in WW11. Sorry. But I can just imagine Kyle saying "wouldn't it be cool if this happened..." while writing this fluff. If you wanted to make a real commentary on what's going on with the war, Kyle, you'd do it. As the various 911 comics of the time proved at the time after the attacks, so much can be said in comic form to comment on serious subjects like terrorism and the war without passing off this 21st century Road Warrior meets The Lost Boys meets Tank Girl fluff for the mind comic with the hot chick posed on the cover as it. See what I just did there, Kyle? I dismissed the notion of this being a real commentary on the war and showing it as just the National Lampoon "kids from ThunderDome go to War" comic that it is. But that's just my two cents and all it's worth. Regardless, good luck with it. And as Rich suggested--I just won't be reading it. Dee

Wow, I had no idea a book about the war would be so controversial!

See what I just did? I said one thing, but obviously meant the opposite! That's irony.

You know, like, "Operation Iraqi Freedom".

Dee, I honestly think you're approaching this a little too literally. Go back and reread that article and pay special attention to the part where Kyle desribes the real-life inspiration for SPECIAL FORCES. Notice how the article refers to it as a "political satire," of which there's a long and proud tradition, in and out of comics. Have you seen Rick Veitch's ARMY @ LOVE yet? That's also political satire of the broad, farcical kind, and it's that kind of approach that I believe Kyle's taking with SPECIAL FORCES. Do you believe a subject like the war is unworthy of satire? Because I've got a couple hundred editorial cartoonists who would disagree with you.

If you don't wanna read it, fine, but given Kyle's track record, I have faith in him and I believe he knows exactly what he's doing.

I don't think I said anything about the man or his abilities, just this particular suck-ass story he's chosen to apply them too. No matter how much you try to pretty up crap it's still CRAP. And if this kinda crap appeals to you--Enjoy. But if it does? I say you should never be hear wondering out loud why comics suck and are in such a sorry state. If you keep accepting what is given to you without demanding more in return for your hard earned dollar you will get exactly this kind of crap served up to you over and over again. Now, my money being worth money, is worth too much to me to waste on crap like this. BUT. Like I said before, if this is the kind of comic that you deem worthy of you're hard earned dollar, again--Enjoy. Dee

I'm not saying you have to love his stuff but still, to I think Kyle Baker (who has won a total of eight Eisner Awards and five Harvey Awards) is just a wee bit better than you're giving him credit for.

You're kidding right? This is like cut-n-paste bad comic ideas slapped together to pander to the Playstation sect. To quote him, "...All the best comics are about fight and teen angst...". Yeah, and the worst too. Aim higher and you might rise above this kinda crap. Dee
