Press Release

Comic book deals with tough issue – Kids and the War in Iraq

Comic books are known for their portrayal of heroes, violence, and victory…but never has a book gone to the heart of the sacrifices made by the children of war veterans.

Award-winning comic book series Amelia Rules! normally deals with the struggles and humor of growing up. But Amelia Rules! #18: “The Things I Cannot Change” will take a very different turn.

“I wanted to be a voice for kids who don’t have one,” says cartoonist Jimmy Gownley. “Thousands of kids have watched one of their parents go fight in this war, and I thought it was time to tell their story.”

The storyline follows character Joan, who has just learned her father will go overseas. It will be guest edited by Iraq war veteran Major Stephen Murphy and his 9-yr-old son, Taegen.

“He joined the Army, but I’m the one who got drafted.”

When Amelia and her friends find out that ‘Ninja Joan’ isn’t moving away, they’re all thrilled…but why doesn’t Joan seem happy?

Then, when Kyle invites Amelia to a 6th-grade dance, they find out the truth – Joan’s father is being sent on a dangerous deployment with his job as a Captain in the United States Army.

Suddenly the young friends need to help Joan through a very difficult time – knowing she won’t see her father for a year…and that’s the best case scenario.

Complete with a lesson plan to assist teachers and counselors in using the issue to help kids in similar situations, Amelia Rules! #18 does what Amelia Rules! does best – combining the heartbreaking and hilarious in 32-pages of the best in children’s comics.
