In a future where the government sanctions vigilante justice, a crimefighting duo become media celebrities, against the wishes of their mentor fathers. It sounds like an extreme version of Heroes for Hire, but it reads a bit like a Paul Verhoeven film. Media is omnipresent and it glorifies the over-the-top violent acts Ebony and Ivory undertake in the name of justice (yes, those really are their code-names). It also influences their look and style, not to mention that of their competitors. I would’ve liked to have seen more tension between the fathers and sons. The fathers are clearly against their sons’ approach, yet they don’t do much other than complain. The art is workmanlike; it doesn’t try to be flashy, it just gets the job done, and it does it well. There are a couple of pages, though, where Ebony is strangely drawn without eyes. Justice for Hire is off to a decent start. I hope the creators play up the more outlandish elements of this ultra-violent world. While this doesn’t read like Robocop-type satire, I think a little of that kind of absurdity couldn’t hurt.
