Jake Gyllenhaal To Play Captain Marvel?

New York Daily News is reporting that Jake Gyllenhaal could be playing Captain Marvel in Shazam!, which is currently in development at New Line Cinema. The studio is reportedly willing to spend upwards of $200 million to kickstart a franchise on par with Batman and Superman over at Warner Bros., and securing Gyllenhaal may be just what the project needs to generate buzz. The star of such films as Brokeback Mountain, Jarhead, and the current release, Zodiac, is in high demand, with rumors going back to 2004 that he’s a likely candidate to replace Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, should that film franchise go beyond the upcoming third installment.

My wife saw this on the news this morning and asked who Captain Marvel was.
This would be a perfect project for Pixar as I don’t think it’ll work as a live-action movie. I wonder if New Line will go the grim-and-gritty route or with a more light-hearted take?

Given the fact that his alter ego is a twelve year-old boy, I think light-hearted is the way to go. We don’t need poor Billy to be a substance abuser with “daddy issues”.

I think that would be as bad a pick as Jude Law would have been for Superman.
I can totally see Jake as Kyle Rayner though, but that would never happen.
